I had Lasik done!

Caren

Cathlete
Hi everyone,

I finally got lasik done on Thursday after being in contacts & glasses since I was 12. I was pretty bad - -5.00 in one eye and -5.25 in the other. I have 2020 vision now - it's awesome! I wish I hadn't waited so long!

Congrats Caren!! I had it done 2 years ago and thought it was the best, most amazing thing ever!! Isn't it great to NEVER have to think about contacts and glasses anymore??? I just makes everything easier!

Thanks! I am still so used to using them, that at the end of the day I am thinking "I should go take my contacts out! Oh yeah, I don't have them in", and this morning, even though I could see, I was reaching to get my glasses off the night stand.

do you notice any side affects? Night blindness or anything like that? I have always wanted lasik but am too chicken!! If your eyesight starts getting fuzzy again, are you able to get lasik again? I think that it is awesome that you are FREE!

I would love to have it done (I am -6.25 in both eyes) but until they make a great dark circle cover, forget it. By the way, anyone know of a good one? The skin under my eyes is really thin and more pronounced the older I get. I need somethning. Help.

Congratulations, that's great! Can you describe the procedure a bit? I am also interested in having it done, but apparently I am a big chicken. Did you have both eyes done on the same day (it sounds like you did). How much recovery time is there, if any? Could you go back to work the next day? Any extra info you could provide would be helpful.

Thanks,

It is AMAZING. I had it done three years ago. I was 10 in one eye a -11 in the other. Yes, you read that correctly! I am 20/20 now and it is the best feeling ever. I had to wear my glasses in the shower, everywhere...couldn't even see the alarm clock!!!

It didn't hurt at all. They gave me a Valium 1/2 an hour before and put numbing drops in your eye the whole time and you literally don't feel it at all. It's very weird. I had to wear goggles for 24 hours after, and I have to put eye drops in 4 times a day for the next week, but that's about the extent of recovery.

The whole surgery took 4 minutes - one minute each eye to cut the flat (I got intralase, so this also was done by a laser. With regular lasik this is done by blade), and then one minute each to do the lasik - when the lazer shapes your eye. That's it. It was not a big deal. It is nothing to be nervous about at all.

If it's done correctly, your Vision won't start to get blurry again. If it doesn't get that clear the first time, you can get "enhancements" to sharpen your Vision. But if you get it this clear the first time you won't have to have it done again.

It does not correct the need to wear reading glasses, which I don't need now, but many people do when they reach 40-45 years of age. So there is a possibility you may still need reading glasses one day, but at least if I do now I won't need bifocals.

I don't have any side effect other than my eyes feeling a little dry, but that is normal for a couple weeks while they are healing.

You don't have to have both eyes done on the same day, but I did.

LOL! I'm -4.0 and -4.25. Me and hubby tossed it around a few times. Nothing definite though. I do know that counts toward your 7 1/2 % medical deduction on your tax return though. Can you tell I'm a tax consultant? :+

Tallchick, without concealer, I could be in a zombie movie without makeup!

Diane Young's red neutralizer is the best thing I've found so far:

They also sell it at QVC sometimes.
It is almost a clay-like consistency, and very densely pigmented.
There's still show-through (I don't think anything could make me completely "circle-free" but not bad.

Thanks, Caren, for the information. I'm going to seriously look into having this done myself. And, it's good to hear that you can get some sort of tax break. I would never have thought of that.

Congratulations, Caren, and I had it done a year and a half ago. It is so much better than wearing contacts and glasses.

That is great Caren! DH & I, just this week, started talking seriouly about getting it done. I am THE biggest chicken in the world but the more & more I hear stories like yours makes me want to go for it. I heard that you can get mono-vision done to prevent you from having to wear glasses while reading. (which I am hoping is true because I wear mono-vision contacts.) I am so happy for you!

I had Lasik done 3 years ago and is the best thing ever; especially with all of the sports I play. The doctor had a bit of a hard time getting the suction on my right eye (it was just a little uncomfortable) but other than that, everything went very well. I do use one eye drop in each eye every night.

Don't you love it? It was one of the best things I have ever done for myself. Especially as someone who is active, excercise without glasses is fantastic. You can swim and still see, you can run in the rain and not wish they made windshield wipers for glasses. It is so worth the money! I was off the charts before and now am better than 20/20. I couldn't even wash dishes without wearing my glasses. I couldn't wear contacts because as I have gotten older my eyes have become really dry. I can't say enough good things about it. Congratulations!
