I feel SO OLD!!!

I'm on my planning period ~ have just begun S.E. Hinton's book The Outsiders with my English 9 class, and NOT ONE 15 year old knows ANY of the actors in The Outsiders movie, with the exception of Tom Cruise!!! What's wrong with today's youth!!!! I expected them not to know C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, and Rob Lowe, but they don't even know Patrick Swayze and Emilio Estevez!! As a result of their ignorance (term applied here with a great amount of love), they got to hear a sermon equating these actors with the likes of Orlando Bloom and Chad Michael Murphy! x(

And Matt Dillon? Wasn't he in the movie too? They MUST know him! Something About Mary!

They should know Rob Lowe too, from the West Wing.

But shame on them all for not having seen Dirty Dancing! Sheesh!

Well, Sarah, it's not like Patrick Swayze and Emilio Estevez are cranking out the movies these days. I can't even remember the last time I've seen either of them in a new movie. Tom Cruise really is the only A-List actor in that movie. Wait - he was in that? Are you sure?

They may know Matt Dillon if you remind them about "Something About Mary". Actually, they probably don't know that one too well either. I'm hoping that when it came out, since they were all so young, their parents didn't allow them to see it.

Honestly, though, I wouldn't put any of the actors (with the exception of Tom Cruise and Matt Dillon) in the same league with Orlando Bloom. I don't know who Chad Michael Murphy is, but Orlando is a really good actor. And I would put Tom Cruise above Orlando. Tom is an excellent actor.

Want to blow your mind? Ask them if they know who The Rolling Stones are.

Back when I was 33 (4 years ago), my husband and I went to a Ween show at a local music venue. In case you don't know who Ween is, they're a rather bizarre musical group - you may remember the song "Voodoo Lady" and "Pushing Up Daisies". Anyway, I was in the bathroom and there was a girl in there talking about how old she felt and that she was sure she was the oldest one there. She was 30. I just kept my mouth shut...

Yeah, Tom Cruise actually had a pretty small part in it ~ he was Steve Randall. They had no idea who Matt Dillon was either, though, but I had forgotten to mention the Something About Mary movie. Isn't it funny how actors come and go? I was mentioning all the magazines I had when I was 12-ish, with all of these guys in there, and mentioning that now these same magazines are devoted to the pin-ups of Orlando et al. Rolling Stones ~ that would certainly get me a lot of blank stares! When talking about rap music, I tell them how much I LOVED LL Cool J and they just laugh. At least the DO know who he is though!

I knew I was OLD when my 4-year-old asked me what a cassette tape and a vhs are. I didn't dare mention betamax. Or the floppy disk.:p

I'm 50 and believe me...it gets worse, LOL!

Believe it or not I still own a stereo that has a fully functional 8 track player :7

Sarah,

You're getting older but you are ALIVE AND WELL!!! That's what matters.:D

I read "The Outsiders" about 5000 times in my youth (my most-read book next to "Are you there God, It's me, Margaret" lol). That is such an awesome story.... I only vaguely remember the movie, though.... and Matt Dillon, YUM! }( }( }(

Cheers,
Marie

My son's 7th grade class just finished reading it. I loved that book -- must've read it 5 or 6 times. My son loved it too. I was disappointed in the movie. I also remember really liking the sequel, "That Was Then, This is Now."

I'm surprised! My sons are 19 and 21 (read it just a few years ago--like 5) and they knew who those guys were! But then, they are movie/celebrity buffs.

I LOVED Matt Dillon..... he was so fine :)

We had a thread about our favotite hot actors not long ago... orlando bloom is great - loved him with johnny deep in pirates of the caribeen.

No way the kids in your class don't know the might duck movies with Emilio Estevez. My son is 16 and he has watched them 100s of times.

Candi! I can't believe you're 50. You always sound so young & modern to me! Not that 50 is old. I just thought you were 30-something.
