I don't know if I spelled that right but what else can you call it when you have to have your bf help get the weight over your head after doing your sets from Slow and Heavy legs :(

I can do the squats with 41 pounds, and the lunges with 36, but by the time I am done with each set my shoulders are so tense from holding the weight I don't have enough umph to get it over my head without straining. I'm like "honey can you come in here so when I'm done with my set you can help me get my bar down."

x( I am a WUS!!!!

Ok, I'm done whining. I'll just have to work on the upper body more I guess. (And buy 20 lb dumbells to use instead until I can lift the bar safely.)

Anyone else experience this ever?

Hello Colleen,

NO way are you a wus, absolutely not! I have the same trouble when I use heavy barbell to do leg work, in fact, you will find that most people on this forum do same thing or they have a home gym. The problem is our lower body can take much much heavier weight than our upper body: in Cathe's PS series she mentions this so that is why you will find that in most of Cathe's heavy leg work she will do a set to pre-exhaust the legs.

I have done 40lbs barbell work for legs for years and I still struggle to lift the barbell over my head afterwards. Because of this I can't go heavier than I would like on this part of my body (I don't mind if the upper is weak though because I don't want to devlop that too much).

You can buy something called a squat rack to help you weight train. I don't have any space left in my work out room to store this, so I have to live with lifting 40lbs right now.

I say keep using your boyfriend because he is cheaper.

one thing that i did for this was i bought a weighted vest. my vest goes up to 40lbs. so i load my barbbell to 40 and right now i'm wearing a 15lbs vest so now i'm squatting 55 without having to lift that amount of weight over my head.

Yen and kariev,

Thanks for the tips :) I think I will look into getting a squat rack, (I had wondered if they made something along those lines) and if that is not a possibility then I'll check into the vests. I appreciate the feedback.

Colleen;-)

A squat rack is a really good idea--and a much safer way to work out if you're not able to handle the barbell. We have one and it has saved us many times from dropping the weights and/or hurting ourselves.

been there!!! my hubby has had to help me lift a 40 pound barbell over my head too. usually by the last set I need help. when he is not around i drop down to 35 to be safe but I do feel like a big wus too!!!!

I like the weighted vest idea. I, too, feel like I could go heavier on my legs but I don't want to be stuck with a barbell I can't get off. Hubby tends to be outside while I'm working out. Not like I can wait an hr for him to come in and lift a barbell off me :) :) :) Wouldn't that be funny???

Definitely NOt a wuss!
As others have said: our lower bodies can take much more weight than our upper bodies.
I usually determine the maximum weight I want to/can lift overhead safely, and add on to that with a weighted vest.

I'd love to get a squat rack, but the kind that comes in two pieces (two separate posts) that are more easily stored). Unfortunately, when I posted here asking if anyone had seen racks like that (which I've used before in a weight-training class), no one responded, and I haven't had any luck finding them online.:-(

Thanks everyone :)

I do feel better now about this, and I did find the racks for about $100 and I'm going to ask for one on my christmas list ;)

Of course I was going to ask for an ipod too.... too many decisions, plus some more Cathe dvd's. whoo hoo :p
