<---needs to watch it again though since it didn't have her full attention at times
<---was amazed at Johnny's singing though
<---thinks he more than held his own and is worth watching just to see him perform
<---had promised Steph a "review", so here are some of her thoughts out of OAL speak:
It is definitely gory as far as there being a lot of blood. You see one montage in particular where while singing a pretty song about his daughter, Johnny slits multiple customer's throats. The customers are "barely" there though, they are more like props, not even really reacting to being killed. If you can get past seeing fake blood squirt out of a fake incisions, you are set for the movie and the very first killing is really the worst out of them all (it's not until about 25 minutes into the story). It might even help watching the "making of" feature first to see kind of how they did it and get past the "blood". Anyways, as far as story line, it's a bit depressing, but since it is based on a famous Broadway play, there really wasn't any way to cheer up the story line. Never having seen the original, the major twist at the end really had me reeling. Talk about adding insult to injury and making it all the more tragic. As far as acting - top notch. Helena was awesome as Mrs. Lovett and Sasha Baron Cohen was a hoot. Of course Johnny was awesome. I LOVE Tim Burton movies, so I really enjoyed the look of the movie and the sets/atmosphere etc... Last comment - this movie is a MUSICAL. Not a movie with a few songs, but almost 90% singing. The characters rarely talk, but usually sing all of their dialogue. It's very similar to the movie "Phantom of the Opera" where they basically took the Broadway play and brought it to film with the original score/songs etc... The songs are used as dialogue though and further the storyline. They are not just fluffy stand along songs that people break into. I really liked this movie, only wish it could have a happy ending.
