How old do you think a girl should be before...

I wouldn't do threading with her to start. I've done both and threading is definitely much more painful than waxing. With waxing it's one shot - rip off the band-aid, so to speak. With threading it takes several minutes because they are essentially ripping out each hair individually. I know a lot of people who wax but can not tolerate threading, and I would imagine a child would be even more sensitive. Threading is more precise, but that's not necessary for the lip and certainly not for a 10 year old. It also causes me to break out, which waxing does not.

OUCH! People thread their upper lip? I get my brows threaded & that's painful enough--I cannot imagine the upper lip! OK, I will hire whoever threads their upper lip to be my bodyguard, b/c that takes some major resistence to pain!

I've been bleaching since I was about 12. I've never gotten the Colonel Sanders look, but I confess I was standing in a grocery store line once & the male cashier said "you have a blonde mustache! That's so cute!" So every few months I Nair it.

Frankly, I'd tell her to embrace her 'stache. But that's just me. :) I'd wax over using a depilatory cream since those can cause nasty chemical burns. Waxing is painful, but it's better than her deliate skin getting burned. A couple hours before waxing, have her take some ibuprofen to lessen the pain.

My almost 10yr old BEGGED me to shave her legs. She has dark hair and she too is darker complected. I thought long and hard about it, but then came to the realization that if it bugs her, then why not remove it? We used a nair type product with good results. It's not perfect, but it removed most of her leg hair and she is one happy camper now!

Oh yes Nair works very well on the legs. She too began shaving her legs at ten. Although at first it was a big deal and she had to do it, now it has fallen by the wayside.

Today my sister did her lip with the wax strips. She was able to get them much warmer than I could. So it is done for now.

No one has mentioned electrolysis. You go to a professional, they zap a tiny little probe down in the hair follicle, then zap. The probe does not hurt, the zap gives a little sting. You have to go for repeated treatments (I have done this), but eventually it is permanent. It is DEFINITELY cheaper than laser, but probably a bit more uncomfortable. I was so embarrassed by mine that I did not care one little bit. The area is red and swollen for a little while afterwards, but definitely gone by the next day. They have to do each little hair follicle, so it can take a couple of sessions to clear the area if there is a lot, then more sessions to make it permanent. I think this is the way to go. Over time, much less expensive than repeated professional waxing.

I will say, it's awesome to not have to worry about this any longer...no upkeep! I like it. It really is affordable...I think you could just look under electrolysis in the yellow pages.

I also second electrolysis, I've been having electrolysis done on my upper lip since I was 16, and my chin since last September, due to an ovarian cyst that upset my hormones and left my chin a little hairier than I cared for. Most salons are reluctant to do this treatment on children younger than 16, so it is best to check. You can bleach inbetween treatments too.

Kathryn, I got my Bellabe yesterday and I must say I'm rather impressed.
It is very simple to use. It only took a minute to figure it out, then I was on my way ripping hair out all over [my face]. No more side burns, mustache, or peach fuzz on my jaw line. Yay.:D
Glad you like it!
Isn't it fun to be able to get rid of all that stuff? I had some tiny hairs on my chin that probvably no one else even noticed, but that bugged me, and that nothing else worked on (I refuse to shave!). The Bellabe does the trick! And when I use it above my lips, even after I don't see anything to remove, I still feel it getting something, so I just keep going!

To the OP: I was at a health food store yesterday, and saw a couple of gentle wax products that I think would work well on a young girl's face: Parissa wax strips and Moom wax strips (they are very similar: both have the same two main ingredients). I picked up a pack of Parissa to try on my bikini line, and they work quite well. I think they'd be fairly gentle on the face (just follow directions and keep the skin taut). That goes for the pre-waxed strips, not necessarily the prep-'em-yourself wax kits.

Do you know what her mother's stand is on this? I don't know that I would do anything without getting input/permission from Mom first. ;)
