How often do you replace your workout shoes?

I've heard anywhere from 6 months to one year, if you use them daily for any kind of moderate to heavy useage. Does replacing the insoles count as almost a "new shoe" or do you invest in another pair?

Thanks for your input!

I have found that if I use my workout shoes EXCLUSIVELY for indoor workouts ( 6 days a week cardio for about an hour , a couple of plyometric workouts, a couple of step workouts, a couple of bootcamp workouts per week) they will last about 4-5 months. I use impact gel inserts and as soon as I feel the support "going" I replace the shoes.

When I replace my workout shoes, they become my "running around doing errands shoes" and the shoes I was doing errands in become my yard/gardening shoes and the previous gardening shoes end up in the trash!!

Every six months!

I workout in them every single day, and also run 3 miles every day in them.

I've had too much experience with aches and pains/injuries that happen from shoes that are not up to par. I'm not ever doing that again!

The time for replacement is dictated by my body's response to the current shoes. If I am starting to feel aches and pains, in the achilles and knees primarily, then I know it's time for new shoes. I don't time it, I just go by feel. I am always right. And as the other poster said, the new pair is used exclusively for indoor workouts, the old pair becomes the "running around in" pair. Then the really old pair is used for mountain river crossings in the Summer when backpacking!

I get a lot of mileage from aerobic studio shoes because my husband has the same size feet as me (he's shorter than me) and he wears them to our daughter's soccer matches and to play tennis after I am done with them. That's huge value for money!

I do the same thing as Clare. No timing...my body tells me. And once I get new shoes my feet and legs say "ahhhhhhhh".;)

I have different shoes for different workouts so it all depends.

My running shoes, 3 times a year if I am running normal mileage for me which when not battling PF!! (ugh) would be 25-30 miles a week.

My aerobic shoes, only about once a year since most of my cardio is running.

My cross trainer for weight workouts, twice a year.

Plus I don't wear them at any other time. I have walking shoes that I wear day to day.

That may be a bit excessive to some but I really notice a difference with aches and pains in my feet if I wear shoes that aren't giving me enough support.

I try to replace mine every six months too. I can tell when they start losing their support when my shins, knees and back start hurting.
