How much weight for Slow and Heavy

Tallchick

Cathlete
I am wondering what is a good amount for Slow and Heavy Legs. I realize that Cathe is using 50 pounds for squats and lunges, but I am wondering how much I should be using. Cathe is a much smaller woman than I. I am six feet and weight 155 to 160. I am currently also using 50 pounds and feel I can go up another 10 but wonder if that is too much---hard on the back etc. I do not have a "spotter" and will not have one in that future (that I am aware). Maybe 50 is enough? I do not have the genes to allow me to be muscular so that is not an issue (and I am one who wishes it were---always wants what ya can't have). Any input would be wonderful. Thank you!

It depends on whether your legs feel challenged towards the end of each set. If you feel that you need more weight, you could try wearing a weighted vest. I haven't tried one, but have seen them advertised.

I think that you can buy weighted vests at sporting goods stores (lots of times they are used for walking, etc.) but if you have two five pound ankle weights you can always strap them together and loop them around your waist, something I've done b/c I can't get much more than 60 pounds over my head.:7

I use the two ankle weights method, plus, I use a fishing vest with lots of pockets that I put weight plates in. The back has a big pocket that I put 10 lbs in, the side pockets hold little 2 1/2 or 5 lb plates. I can end up with 20 or 25 lbs in there, the seams are very sturdy and it works great.

I use 75 lbs for S/H legs. I am 5'8" and weigh 135. I only put 55 on the barbell, the rest is in the vest.

But I started with 50 and worked up to 75, so just use what works for you.

Aquajock uses a vest made for fitness that has lots of little weights that slip into little slots.

I use a weighted vest for S&H because I don't feel safe putting more than 55# on my barbell - my wonky elbow gives me grief if I go heavier than that. If your form is good the additional weight should not be a problem for your back.

The sporting goods stores in my area are not good, so I had to go online. I got my vest here:

what great ideas. Okay, I want that vest but I don't have the funds for it now. I think I will be saving in the next few weeks. It's so great to be able to get the answers one needs on this website!
