I also gain about 3-5 pounds. That's pretty exciting for me right now, because I'm actually at "peak water retention" and am currently holding my 3-5 extra pounds. Why is that so exciting? Because I've actually lost 2 pounds in the past week and a half, despite this water gain. I'm on the Abs Diet plan and I can't wait until after the bloat is over so I can see how much weight I've actually lost since starting the plan 3 weeks ago.

Dani,

When I used to have periods, it was definitely between 3-5 lbs a month. I'm not sure why it happens but, my breasts used to get sore also and swell. I figured I was holding on to water due to some kind of hormonal activity.

I didn't vote coz "I don't dare get on the scale at TTOM!!!" was not an option! :p

LOL, Wendy! How true! I've learned my lesson on that one. I get so depressed and that only compounds the emotional tightrope I'm barely hanging on to!

>Why does this happen?

Most women gain a couple of pounds during TTOM due to fluid (mostly water) retention. Some women experience cravings for high carb and/or high fat foods days before and it is possible that the extra weight has to do with that too.

Okay, you all made me feel better! Thank you!!

:)

I don't know why I do this to myself every month, but I am drawn to weigh myself at that time for some reason. It's like the scale is a magnet pulling me in. :p I need to stop!

You know I'm going to guesstimate 1-3 but really I rarely ever weigh myself then. I know I'll only be depressed and then it will go back down anyway so why even bother ;)

I must be weird. I have almost a bipolar cycle. I find that right before TTOM, I become more assertive, more out-going, more clear-minded, more active and my body turns into a lean, mean, exercise machine. I definitely weigh less during such episodes. Those are the times when I can take on the world. A few days into my period, I go back to being shy and more introverted, my thinking gets fuzzy again, my stomach puffs up and I go back to being a few lbs. heavier. By the time my period is over, I feel at my worst.

Really strange. It almost seems like I'm on the opposite schedule from everybody else. For me, PMS is like being on steriods.

Normally around 1-3 lbs. for me. But there are some months when I don't gain any weight. I notice that such months are getting rare as I get older.:p

Not only the weight gain, but my appetite goes out of control. I eat like a machine at TTOM. As soon as I get my period though, my appetite wanes again. Hormones are powerful. I try to explain this to my husband, but he just doesn't "get it."

Fortunatly, I don't gain any weight, don't get any food cravings and I don't get any bloating. I am only 26 so I am sure with age, I will be stuffing brownies in my mouth, look like I am retaining 3 tons of water and have gained 10 lbs.

Hi Nancy. Actually, that is not strange at all. A lot of women claim to be more mentally alert a few days before TTOM and the first 2 days of their period and they also claim a lack of concentration during ovulation. I'm thinking it is a hormonal thing. I know for a fact that progesterone and estrogen (the female hormones) are the highest right before and during TTOM and testosterone (the male hormone, which we have in minimal amounts) is not as high, and during ovulation our testosterone levels are the highest followed by the female hormones. Maybe our minds gets fuzzy because of the testosterone levels. We think like guys during ovulation. I know I do LOL. And we feel smarter when the female hormones are the highest. Haha how's that for sexist? :7 :+

I don't think it has anything to do with age. I think if you're predisposed to those things (bloating, tenderness, mood swings...) you'll have them pretty much from the time you start menstruating. Consider yourself lucky.

I get moddy about a week before. When I was younger I use to have the worst periods ever! I would be lying on the flooring rolling around and comming from a VERY religious home, they wouldn't hear of putting me on the pill to ease mt period cramps.
Then one day I came home pregnate:eek: (you can only imagine) And having a baby has really ligthened up my periods. Shes not a baby anymore though, she 9.Where are the time went?

Haha! I didn't know any of that, Rose. But it explains a lot. LOL!!:7
