How much muscle can women really gain?

I was wondering if some of our resident experts could weigh in on this question.

How much lean muscle mass can women really gain in a month or over the course of a year? I know it's not nearly as much as many people often think, but I can't find a good definitive answer on this.

Thanks! :)

It depends

Everybody is different. I gain muscle easily because of my high insulin levels (insulin behaves like testosterone and it makes you fat too. Lovely.)

Very interesting. I see how there's not an "answer" to this, but is there a range in which most women fall? Assuming a woman lifts weights diligently, progressively increasing the intensity, and eats reasonably well, on the average could she expect to gain over a year 5 lbs of muscle? 25 lbs of muscle?

I just don't think there is a good answer. As others have pointed out, people's bodies vary so much it is dependant on their body make-up and such. The answer would be the same if you asked how much muscle a man could be expected to gain.

Sorry, off topic but who rated this thread one star? I REALLY wish they would do away with the rating system.

Again, my apologies, I just needed to vent about this silly star thing - it annoys me so much!

LOL, thanks for defending my post :D, geez thought it was a harmless question ;)

Thanks for answering, I was more curious about the potential range like another poster mentioned, there has to be some kind of average. Most of my searching today found that men doing everything right are doing well if they can average .5-1 pound/week gain , and really it was closer to .5 pounds. So I'll just make my own assumptions for women.

i notice this a lot lately. and i think it was a very good question. after all these years working out i still get confused about the topic too but i guess if it doesn't cause a flame war its a one star question.
