How much do you tip your stylist?

I apologize for a post that has nothing to do with working out or eating right, but...

How much do you tip your stylist? I typically tip everyone in the service industry 20% unless I have really bad service somewhere. DH says that there is no way I should be tipping my sytlist 20% when they charge so darn much. :) I just had a color and highlight for $85, which I didn't think was terrible for around here since I have thick hair. He asked me if I'd ever had my eyebrows professionally shaped (well, obviously not by the apparent horrid look of them, although I'd done my share in my days as a licensed esthetician). So I thought sure, why not. The last gal I went to charged $5 to do a quick wax. Well, FOURTEEN DOLLARS later, my bill was $99. I think I'll keep my eyebrows in the future, thank you.

I colored my own hair for so long (and I know stylists are VERY opinionated about that topic) and spent about $15 total. So I just thought I'd check and see what others typically tip. And how do I go back now and tip less? DH said to blame him (as if I wouldn't have???).

I usually do around 10 - 20%, but my situation's a little different because my stylist does my hair in her home (her salon' s in Tribeca, but she lives near me). I'm curious to see what other people tip! Ladies???

I tip 20% and wouldn't dream of giving a penny less. Let me add that I've been going to the same gal for 16 years now and she has become a friend. She does a good job, especially with my color. Everybody remarks on how good my color and highlights look. On holidays I tip AND give a gift.

She is willing to go above and beyond the call of duty for me. When I had surgery a few years ago I wasn't permitted to drive along with a host of other restrictions, so she came to my home twice in a 3 month period and did my hair.

Hey man, it's your hair were talking here. It's the first thing people notice about you.

Michele:)

I am the same as Michele, 20% all the way around. Except for one time. I was trying something new with my hair, and wanted some hightlights. I don't know what she did, but the back of my shirt got completely bleached. x( I got a discount, she didn't get a tip and I haven't colored or highlighted my hair since, she hasn't seen me since and niether has that salon.

I tip 20%, and I give the shampoo lady $2.00. Anyhow, I am just wondering about the fact that I am tipping my stylist who is also the owner of the salon. She is the only person there. Am I suppose to be tipping? Melissa

I've heard you're not suppose to tip the owner, but I've never really heard a good explanation behind it. And you feel really weird, not tipping. I used to go to the owner and paid the expert rate(I guess reason enough not to tip). Well the owner usually had her up & coming stylist work on my hair under her supervision. So I started scheduling with the up & coming stylist, paid the lower rate and got the same level of service(paid less even with tip).

This is a difficult one for me. My hair stylist and colorist are so expensive, that 20% would be nutsy. I mean, I tip very generously everywhere else, but with the price of things at salons, I just don't feel that generous. My DH gets $10 haircuts, so he tips 100%. I think my colorist charges like $165 for "half a head". Trust me, he doesn't get 100%. :(

Wow Nancy, I don't blame you! That's high!

I tip 25% at least. My stylist is a good friend, so I like to be generous.

As someone in the business...(manicurist) I have clients that don't tip, and clients that tip 10 to 20% and I have gotten even more. As I love my job and don't ever get upset when a client does not tip, the ones that do I know they really like and appreciate my work. And, that makes me feel very good about what I do...:)...Carole

I don't tip my styist, since he owns the shop. I do tip the girl who does my color, usually about 20%. If someone besides my stylist gives me a shampoo, I tip her a buck or 2.

I have my hair weaved and trimmed every eight weeks. She charges $85.00 for the service and I tip her $25.00. I tip alot because I love her work and get lots of compliments from friends who are willing to tell me the truth (sometimes I appreciate this and other times not, but I did ask). I also put myself thru college as a cocktail waitress and understand living off tips.

I tip her 20%, and round up if needed. I have lots of hair and it takes extra time. It does hurt to pay $125 for a cut and highlights, then add a $25 tip. But like Michele said, this is your hair here! You will be loving or hating life for the next 6 weeks depending on how your stylist did, so my routine is to find good stylists and tip them well. : ) Bella

Hi,

I've always wondered what people tip. I live outside of DC and highlights, cut and blow dry are about 200. I don't tip 20%, but maybe I should. It just seems like so much money.

I just went to the salon yesterday! I tip at least 20%. I found this amazing women who does my hair, she does such a great job...I don't mind give her extra. She's a single mom & I want to bless her for doing a good job. I got a haircut & style & eyebrow waxing for $33. I gave her a $10 tip. DH & my Dad always tip well. I think guys tip better than us ladies. :D

I get my hair done just outside of DC as well. Cut and Color costs $100 and I tip $25. Cut, Color and Hilite costs $170 and I tip $40.

DH and I just had a great dinner with our family (total of 8 of us) at a restaurant. The service was EXCEPTIONAL! The bill was a bit over $300 and we tipped $100. The way I look at it is that the service can make or break an outing. I always try to be generous to those that make the experience (whatever it may be) more enjoyable.

I have never worked in the service industry. However, I really enjoy good service and will always try to give fair compensation to those who provide it. :)

I'm also in the business (manicurist) and I own and operate my business alone. Some people tip, some don't. With those that tip well, I'm more apt to get them in quicker and do more for them. I have overhead, (rent, utilities etc) my products go up and up and up everytime you go to the supplier to stock up. I feel awful raising my prices so I depend on tips to help pay for my high overhead. If you like the outcome of your appointment, had great conversation and a relaxing experience (without the kids I hope) then tip your stylist (or manicurist) for that appointment -- she or he deserves it!
Sheryl

Sheryl, I do tip them, but my haircuts cost $125 and the colorings are $165, so I never get out of the place for less than $300. I am virtually positive that these guys make more than I do. How much should I tip them? I mean, I don't want to be a slouch, but I need to save for retirement too. :(
