how much do you eat?

Well, I decided to not buy/try the 6 week body makeover since I read the restrictions are little too much for me, especially giving up coffee/caffeine. I'm looking for some type of easy to follow diet plan, I know theres clean eating and not counting calories but it gets confusing when people say you aren't eating enough. In my quest to find some type of good meal plans to get me in the right direction, I'm a bit of a video fitness instructor stalker and saved a couple of meal plans that Tracie Long posted years ago when she was on WHFN and one from Debbie Siebers that was posted on BeachBody's boards (please don't think I'm too weird for saving these, lol) These sound like pretty low in calories since these women exercise for a living...just wondering what people here think? I was going to follow them since there's not much cooking/prepairing involved and just replace things here and there as I get bored with certain foods.

Tracie Long's:
My daily diet: (this is an ideal day for me)

ezekial bread toasted w/organic butter or earth
balance (2 slices)
2 coffee w/organic half and half and turbinado sugar

balance gold bar or some trail mix

tomatoes dipped in sea salt
splet quesidilla w/cheese, red peppers
celery stalk

1 hard boiled organic egg w/sea salt
grapefruit flax drink (2 whole grapefruits, 1/2 cup
ground flax)

large green salad w/ a variety of veggies
garbanzo beans
chicken or salmon
Newman's own ranch dressing

couple handfuls of dark choc chips and herbal tea
w/honey

Lot's of water

Debbie Siebers post:

I eat very small mini-meals throughout the day. I do
not eat complex carbs after 12:00 noon. The only
complex carbs I do eat are Oatmeal or a whole grain
cereal for breakfast. I do not eat 3 hours before I go
to bed. I eat alot of salads, fish, chicken, fruits
and veggies. I also drink tons of water. Right now, my
appetite is very low because of the heat.
Usually, for breakfast I will have my whole grain
cereal with soy milk. Otherwise, I'll have some
scrambled egg whites with a Tbsp. of guacamole and
some salsa, or I'll have a protein shake with soy milk
and frozen fruit! Then, about 3 hours later, I'll have
some fresh fruit. Blueberries are my favorite.
Otherwise, I'll have an apple or banana. An hour
later, I'll have a salad with some protein in it. I
mix up dark greens with cucumbers, peppers, mushrooms
and whatever yummy veggies I feel like at the time,
with a little chicken, tuna, hard boiled eggs.....and
top it with Balsamic Dressing. Three hours later, I'll
usually have some fruit again. Then, one hour later,
I'll have some fish or chicken with veggies. I also
snack on edamame (soy beans) wasa crackers (high in
fiber) yogurt, Tbsp. of natural peanut butter, frozen
fruit bars (from the health food store). You know,
healthy stuff like that!!

Those plans might be a little higher in calories than they look. I know when I started logging daily calories, I was pretty surprised by how quickly the numbers added up.

Personally, I like Debbie's day a little more. But that's just a preference thing.

To answer your first question, I eat anywhere from 1400 - 1600 calories a day. Lately I've been staying on the high end and doing well. I'm still playing with the numbers though, and I may adjust them as I weight train more.

My 1600 calories is mainly made up of: Skim milk, fruit, spinach, tuna, chicken, soy protein powder, cheese, various veggies, flax bread, peanut butter, Kashi cereal, Frosted Mini-Wheats , and yogurt.

There are days when I eat garlic bread or something not necessarily that healthy along with the rest of my family, but I always make sure I log it so I stay within my targeted numbers.

How much do I eat ?

I have no idea! I just stick mostly to natural, whole vegan foods, and it seems to work out. (It's when I stray into the not-so-whole stuff that I start to get in trouble, then I catch myself and get back on track).

How much I eat can vary from day to day, and depends somewhat on my activity level and, of course, my appetite.

do you think it's necessary to really eat 2000+ calories a day? Just something I read alot that metabolism slows down too much even on 1500..so thats where it gets confusing. Like if you are doing intense Cathe workouts (and sedentary the rest of the day), how much do you really need to eat? I'm trying to lose weight, but eating 2000+ calories usually leaves my stuffed to the point I can't even exercise and it is some work counting up to that much. Should I just eat clean and till I'm full and not worry so much if it's enough or not?

I'm struggling with how much to eat too. I don't count anything, I just try to eat whole, natural foods. According to my midwives I'm not gaining enough weight for my pregnancy so they're having me keep a food journal. But Baby is obviously growing and I feel fantastic (other than this blasted insomnia tongiht!!!). Guess I'll find out what they say at my next appt. when they see my journal. I'll be interested to see your responses. Good luck to you!

I do similar to Kathryn. I try to stick to healthy, vegetarian, whole foods, with an occasional stroll into junk food land. :D The 90/10 thing has always worked for me.

I eat about 2000 calories a day, I'm 5 ft high and about 120 lbs if I had to guess, size 4-6. I mostly eat whole grains, beans, beans, beans, fruit and veggies, yogurt, cheeses, eggs, and lots of smoothies as well. In the not so great category, I drink coffee with milk and agave every day, use butter and indulge in chocolate.

I do as Kathryn and Sparrow. I don't count calories, I eat when I am hungry, stop before I am full and make everything from scratch using whole foods including butter from our local farmer. And I love to eat chocolate, lots of it, and have about 3-4 glasses of wine a week w/ dinner. I probably eat anywhere from 2,000 - 2,500 depending on what I did the day before. I don't like restrictive diets, actually I hate the word diet (period), and I believe that the best way to eat is to listen to what your body is telling you... unless it is calling you to McD's! ;)

It all depends....

For me, it depends on the day. I try to vary, depending on what workouts I'm doing. I've been tri training and I make sure I get enough complex carb when I'm running or biking longer. My average days are probably around 1,800 cals, more when I'm training. I track at http://www.myfitnesspal.com I've tried keeping it around 1,500- 1,600 cals but it just does NOT work for me. I'm starving and miserable! I do make really healthy choices- higher fiber good carb, lean protein, low-fat dairy, and good fats. I'm with Missy- I hate the word diet. I say it's a healthy lifestyle, nothing short term for me!

I don't count calories either. I try to eat healthy every day, all day. I eat lots of eggs, fish, chicken, tofu, fruits, veggies, complex carbs and lots of water. I try to listen to my body and if I'm hungry, I'll eat more. If I workout extra hard that day, I may eat a little more. For instance on Sunday, I ran 7 miles and then did an upper body weight workout so I ate a little more.

Right now it's working really well for me. I feel the best I have felt in a long while. I'm training for a 1/2 marathon in December so I'm extra focused on my training and eating the best I can. I do indulge from time to time but I try not to go overboard.

Like Jess, when I'm working out harder (esp. if I'm doing a cycle of GS or S&H), I tend to eat a lot more. I think I come in around 2,000 calories a day, but I've been trying not to track it since I'm focusing on just eating healthy foods.:)

I pretty much think along these lines. Although I make an effort to eat healthy, I eat till satisfied and snack when needed. I feel like I'm starving myself when I get too restrictive and I don't feel its healthy.

Oh, good! I see people post about 1,200 cals a day and think I would gnaw my arm off!! LOL I'm also 5'7", so maybe that makes a difference! I've done both- tracking and not tracking and I'm OCD so I love seeing it all laid out. LOL

I'm with a lot of the others here. I actually tend to eat right before I feel like I'm going to get hungry and eat until I'm satisfied (not "full"). I feel like I eat mostly fruits and vegetables. Veggies are default eating for me; I tend to think in terms of "what carbs/protein am I going to have with my veggies?". Those are usually high fiber carbs like beans, rice, quinoa, or squash, and protein is usually chicken, tuna, or eggs. I have a big honkin glass of water with every meal and a big cup of tea when I feel like senselessly consuming something. For the most part at least. If someone puts chocolate cake in front of me, I will most definitely enjoy some. :)

I don't count calories out of principle. If I'm eating high quality food, I trust my body to know when and what it needs. It wasn't until I stopped counting that I found like I found a balance with my body.

LOL about gnawing your arm off! I feel the same way! I was just talking about this to someone at the RT, who also said that she eats about 2,100 a day, and that made me feel a lot better. (I'm not even 5'4", though, so I don't even have the excuse of height! I just likes me my food!:p)

I don't count calories, but I do keep an eye on what I eat. I keep a food journal, I write down everything I eat all day long. I try to stick with the healthy stuff, I'm probably about 80/20 on the health/bad scale. I have a weakness for chocolate, ice cream, and bakery. My food journal is more so I know what I've eaten and can eyeball my intake for the day. If I snuck some chocolate cake for breakfast, then that means I can't have any later. I pretty much go by the "eat when you're hungry" philospy and "stop when you're full, not stuffed" And I drink all day long. Mostly water, I am down to 1 diet coke a day, but I do love me some plain sun tea in the summer. If I know I'm going out for dinner, I make sure I eat a lower cal, healthy breakfast and lunch. I don't make menus ahead of time, but I try to be aware of my choices and my schedule. I couldn't plan everything I'm going to eat, because I would go crazy. I would end up eating everything I planned, plus everything I wanted. I think we all just need to find the magic formula that works for us, and that can be tough. But if you are hungry all the time, your body is telling you something.

I used to wonder why I could pack down a Big Mac Meal, a Coke, and a candy bar and still be hungry. I was shoving food in my body, but I wasn't FEEDING it. Eats whats good for you and the rest will take care of itself.

Thanks for posting this site! Just came from it and it looks so simple to use!

I clock in at 2400 or so per day. I'm marathon training right now, so even that's a little low for me sometimes.

I work out a lot, I could never go below 2000/day. I lose too much weight including muscle if I do that. No to mention my stomach would talk to me all day.

ITA

I also hate the word diet, used in the sense of 'specific regimen used to lose weight.' I usually only use it to mean "how one eats."

I think the 'listen-to-your-body' thing works well...but ONLY if you base that on whole foods. Too many times, our modern tastes are dictated by what 's advertised around us, or how pretty the packages are, or subliminal and not-so-subliminal messages to get us to eat non-food.

Real food, that the body is built for...that's the key.
