How many....

How many calories do you guys think we burn (on average) doing some of Cathe's weight training workouts? For example - Muscle Max, Muscle Endurance, Gym Style series...those workouts as opposed to some that are cardio focused. Do you think 300 calories is a good range? I usually push myself relatively hard during these workout and I'm sweating by the time I'm done.

Thanks for your input!

Depends on how much you weigh, how much muscle you have, how heavy your weights are, how much effort you're putting in, and a whole host of other things! You could use a heart rate monitor to get an approximate number of calories that you're burning. It won't be perfect -- a good model will calculate the calories based on your weight, your age, and what is happening with your heart rate all through your workout -- but it can't take your body composition into account.

At 170 lbs and 46 years old, according to my HRM, I regularly burn 400-500 calories in a Cathe weight training workout. If you're 110 lbs you might only burn 250 calories putting in the same effort I do.

Wow! I think I need to invest in a heart rate monitor. Do you have one? How much was yours if you don't mind me asking. Do you recommend a certain model?

I think this makes me question how accurate the "calories burned" do-hickie on my treadmill. I usually do a programmed run that indicates I burn about 300 calories in 30 minutes. I'm wondering now how accurate it is now...I guess it's a good guide though, regardless.

Now if I could just put down the cookies, I'd be okay!:p

I'm 5'3", 119 pounds, and I burn between 200 and 250 calories with Cathe's weight workouts. I think your treadmill is probably pretty close because on the elliptical I go for 60 minutes of intervals, and I burn about 760 calories every time. So that's around 100+ calories every ten minutes, same as you.

I'm 5'5" and close to 150 (***hangs head in shame***) and I burn anywhere from 200-350 calories in most of Cathe's weight workouts--more for the circuits, of course. I've heard some of the treadmills or ellipticals exaggerate the calories burned, but I don't use one so I can't say from a personal point of view. I use a heart rate monitor--I think it cost me 60 or 70 bucks at a local sports store. You can get them a little cheaper or a lot more expensive, depending on how many bells and whistles you want with it.

My TM is way off on calories. I wear a HRM and the TM is usually about 100-200 off from my HRM. I have a polar and it was about $100. I really like it.

I have a top of the line Polar HRM - I got it as a gift, but I think it cost around $180 Canadian (I guess that's about $165 U.S.). I used to be really skeptical about HRMs but I'm a convert now -- mine keeps me honest and confirms to me when I should be working a bit harder or a bit easier! I highly recommend getting one. I think if I were buying my own I'd probably spend $100-ish.

You put down the cookies and I'll put down the ice cream, 'K?
