How do you use CTX?

Hi all. Well after a 3-month FIASCO of an experience with the personal trainer / registered dietician I had hired and worked with, I'm back to doing my own stuff. But I got the CTX series for Christmas and need some guidance working it in. I know many of you had said you thought CTX was really under-praised and after doing a few of them I think you're right.

But for those of you who use this series a lot, how do you do it? For example I did S&H chest and back yesterday followed by Power Circuit, including the back work. So it was a killer back day for me, and I'm loving it today (I love DOMS!) Is that what you all do - use it as a supplement to other strength w/o's - or what? TIA

Lorrie

Lorrie - what happened with your personal trainer/dietician?

I hardly ever use the cardio from CTX because I usually run and spin for cardio, but I use the strength work frequently. There are so many ways to use it - I usually do the upper body split, but sometimes I will use a section as an add-on to another strength workout. I really enjoy the strength work in this series. Sometimes I'll add Power Circuit cardio on to a lower body workout or the kickboxing cardio on an upper body day.

Have fun with it!

Lorrie,

I do as you do, or on weeks when I am short on time, I will do the w/o's as designed and just use the "Upper Body Split" as a second-hit for upper body. Other weeks I double up the cardio (CTX cardio + a similar premix, i.e., Kickbox + a Kickmax premix, etc.)

What happened with the personal trainer?? I remember you asking if you should go with the man or the woman, right? Sorry it didn't work out, that must have been very disappointing!

CTX is great isn't it? Many of the workouts are short enough to be considered time savers, but challenging enough to make them worth your time. Sometimes, I'll just do 2 of the cardio sessions back to back and skip the weight portion. Other times, I'll skip the cardio and do 2 body parts, or just one with LL.

BTW, I'm curious about your issue with your personal trainer. Being one myself, I'm always wanting to make sure I'm keeping my clients motivated and offering them challenges at the same time. I would think that having a trainer who is also an RD would be a great big plus. Maybe not though huh?

I was actually going to write in to sing CTX's praises myself! I started using it this week in its pure form (each full workout each day) and really feel like I get a great workout in. I am getting married next week, and I have been really pressed for time. THis is no time to neglect the workouts!! Soooo, CTX has really helped me keep committed to my workouts. When I have more time again, I plan on mixing and matching with my other Cathe workouts. I think it's a must in the Cathe collection!

I LOVE the CTX series. I did a two week rotation a few weeks back. I did one workout each day and using GS the first week and PS the second week added on the body part of the day so that I was working each body part for about 30 minutes total each day.

This series is SO versatile...the possibilities are endless.

Thanks for the input on CTX. I am really liking this series. For those who asked, here's the skinny on my PT fiasco.

I wanted to do it in my home because I have 3 small kids. So we started in late October - she came over 1x weekly and put together a great workout for me. I have dumbbells up to 40#, a barbell up to 70#, an elliptical, treadmill, and a Rockit (squat machine). She's also a registered dietician and reviewed my diet. I had convinced myself that I'm carbohydrate sensitive and so was doing lower carb. I weighed 133 when we started and really wanted to lose body fat.

She reviewed my diet and advised that my protein was way too high, and carbs not nearly high enough - she said it was doubtful that I gain weight with carbs - my portion control was wrong. So she put me on her program, which is 60% carb, 25% protein, 15% fat. As I worked with her I learned more about a vegan diet (she is a vegan) and tried that approach starting just b4 T'giving. She planned a diet for me that included a lot of whole grains. She reviewed my diet weekly and told me I needed to increase my calories (I was around 1500). She said for as much as I work out I really needed those calories to rev up my metabolism.

All the while she came over 1x week and we continued to work out. In mid-December I told her that I didn't feel as lean as when we started and wondered if it could be the carbs. Absolutely not she said. Toward late December she advised that I had maxed out on the weights I had available in my home and suggested that I begin using the machines at her 2 different facilities (different machines at each location.) So I went to both places and she established a routine on the equipment for me. (These are great gym "weight stack" machines and I can get a totally different workout from them than from my in-home stuff.) I paid her $25.00 a month for open use of the equipment - which I think is a good price.

Going there does however defeat my purpose of wanting an in-home trainer. Once she established my routine there (BTW - she doesn't work with me there - I'm on my own) she stopped coming over to my home. Two weeks ago I had a dr. appt and weighed in at 142 (OUCH!!!!) I told her that I had gained almost 10 pounds since following her program (and I followed it to the letter!). She told me it was probably muscle, but my clothes are tight now so I know that's not the case. I asked her again if she thought it was the carbs and she again said no. I suggested that I cut the grains out (see TLT discussion on cutting grains if you're an "O" blood type) and she said she would put a diet together for me. That was 2 weeks ago and I haven't heard a word about the diet since. I do still see her when I go to her place to work out, but no additional help. And I'm so frustrated that I don't even want to ask - but I will go to use that equipment when I can.

So I kicked my a** into gear last week with David Kirsch for 2 weeks and then I'm going to zig-zag my calories again. Ladies I really know my body and I am more convinced than ever that I cannot do high carbs without gaining weight. I know a one-size fits all approach does not work and I hope she now knows that as well. I finished the 3 months of really committed work on her program with weight up and much more "jiggley" than I started out. But what really got me is how she just kind of let me go into oblivion. So I went back to what worked for me on my Cathe's (2 days of circuit followed by one day of strength, and a lot of cardio). As soon as I get back to where I was before I started with her, I'm calling the male trainer. (I've already spoken to him and he couldn't believe that high of a carb base when a knowledgeable client says she's carb sensitive.) So that's my long-winded story about my not-so-good experience with my trainer / dietician. UGH! (Thanks for letting me rant.)

Lorrie

Lorrie, what a story! I would be majorly pissed about that. It's weird; she sounds like she knows what she's doing, yet she obviously isn't at all flexible with the diet when it doesn't work out. I think it's great that you know your body well enough to know when to stop the madness.

I think $25 a month is really cheap to get access to the equipment, but frankly, isn't it infuriating to see her? I'd be tempted to tie her to a machine. But that's just me. }(

Marie

You're right Marie - it makes me nuts to see her, but it's just more energy that I can put into harder workouts. And I couldn't pass up the $25 a month for complete access anytime. As I said it's just a matter of finding that time to get there. I guess I just chalk it up to a learning experience and move on. Thanks!

Lorrie

Your experience reminds me of interior decorator's...some are good and some are crap. Your trainer apparently wanted you doing HER program...i.e. what works for her. It's like hiring a decorator who pushes his love of modern decor on his clients...even if you happen to have a vintage victorian home.

You're right...a one-size-fits-all approach is a disaster. I'd drop this trainer and look elsewhere. Trust your instincts.
