How are our Southern California Catheites today?

Thanks Christine for you thoughtfulness.

I live in San Diego, but by the beaches. We are not in the direct lines of the fires, but our schools are closed, lots of businesses are closed, Naval bases are down to essiential personnel, my kids YMCA sports cancelled. The air here is awful. There is plenty of ash and embers in the air. WE were told to stay inside and off the freeways. The sky is hazy and grey. Last night , I stepped outside and looked out and the distant sky was orange. I am lucky that our section of town has not been evacuated, but I do feel for the families that have been evacuated. We are Navy , and the base has set up some accomodations, so if we have any problems this is were we would go first. Our main concern would be to find a place where we could be with our 2 dogs. My heart goes out to the families that have had to leave their homes and belongings behind. Everyone in SoCal stay safe, evacuate if you have to, material things can be replaced. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness.

Hope all stays well for you, Luvmylabs! It's a mess there, is my understanding.

I know a lot of the shelters are taking pets this time - a lesson from New Orleans, I guess. Also, any of the VCA Animal Hospitals are offering boarding free of charge (it's in kennel boarding and not desirable, but better than nothing if you have no other choice).

Thanks again Christine. I am praying that we can stay put and these fires get under control. Catheites are wonderful people!!!

lumbylabs,

All Navy housing is booked full. A co-worker of mine is former military. He attempted to get housing in the Navy lodge, bachelor housing, etc. with no luck. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. The Rock School (in Liberty Station) just became an evacuation area. This may be an option for our fellow San Diegans.

Thanks Lorrayne for the info. Me and my neighbor talked this morning about this, saying that by the time we have to evacuate, there will be no place for us to go since we live at the beaches, this means that everone inland will have to be evacuated first, which in turn means maybe there will be no where for all of us to go. My husband is "essiential personnel, so he is at work all day.

Scripps Ranch and a portion of Del Mar (just north of Torrey Pines) was just given the green light to return back to their homes. This should provide some relief in finding some hotel rooms (I hope).

I'm still waiting to hear if LeanneM is o.k.--she seemed upbeat last night that her house would be o.k. but I haven't heard from her today at all.

Hi all,

Thanks for your concern, everyone! I'm sorry that I haven't checked in, but we've been busy all day trying to get things packed up in case we have to leave. At this point, it looks like our area in Carlsbad is safe, which is really wonderful news, but we've been glued to the TV for the last 48 hours. We're ready to go in case we need to leave in a hurry.

I think that Qualcomm Stadium is still accepting evacuees, in case some of you need some place to go. I wish we could take in some people, but we have two sets of family members boarding with us now. What craziness! Hopefully everyone is staying safe!!!

Leanne

I can't believe what's going on. It is so terrible. The NY Times is reporting that 500,000 have been evacuated. I feel just awful for these people.

Hi Leanne,

I just heard that the evacuation for portions of Carlsbad has been lifted. I bet you feel much better now. Are you all unpacked?

Unfortuantely, I'm still packed and ready to go. Another night will be spent "sleeping" on the couch.

Hi Lorrayne,

Yes, we're feeling better, but now there is that new fire at Camp Pendleton that's just a few miles north of us. How are you doing?? Are you alright??

Hope everyone is OK!!
Leanne

Hi Leanne,

I'm fine here. I actually slept last night (finally). But, I slept on the couch again in case I get a knock on the door. Thankfully, that didn't happen. Whew!

Yes, I saw Pendleton has been evacuated and I-5 is closed up there.

I believe the fire up in Pendleton is moving in a rotherly direction. So, it shouldn't affect you.

Hi Lorrayne,

I'm so glad to hear that you're still safe!!! Where exactly are you located? We haven't been sleeping well either, although last night we did sleep a little better. My brother and his family were able to return to their house in Rancho Penasquitos, but we have some family members from Ramona still with us. Their house has been safe so far, but they have no idea of when they'll be able to get home.

I thought things would be better today, but it sounds like things have gotten worse with that new fire and in the southern part of the county!

Isn't this just all like something out of a bad dream?? Were you here four years ago with the Cedar Fire? When that happened, it seemed like nothing like that could ever happen again, but here it is again!

Hope all the other So. Cal Catheites are doing well and are safe!!!

Leanne

I just wanted you all to know I have been praying for you so much! I spent the first 30 years of my life in southern California and it just breaks my heart to watch what's happening. I've been glued to the news every chance I get. I know that fires are nothing new out there, but it seems like each season it's worse. I will continue to keep you all in my prayers. Please be safe.

Thanks so much, Suz, and everyone else! It's truly so comforting to know that so many people are sending thoughts and prayers our way! So many people have lost their homes, but fortunately there have only been a few injuries. Hopefully people will continue to be safe!!

Hi Leanne,

I live in UTC just above Rose Canyon near UTC mall. I lived here during the Cedar Fire as well. The fire line was 5 miles East of my home during this fire.

Thank goodness your brother and his family were able to return to their home. I hope that your other family members in Ramona don't lose their home.

Really scary for everyone.

Lorrayne

Amen to that Leanne!! It truly is a blessing that so few have been injured. *knocks on wood* Praying for your continued safety.

Glad to see I have sisters in this hectic time. I am in the mountains of the East County and the Harris fire is headed for us. I thought we were off the hook but it is almost night and the fire is raging and the terrain out here is steep and impossible to get to without air support.

Thanks to you all for the concern and support,

Nicole
