Hottest New Workout Classes

Cathlete
Self Magazine polled more than 100 gyms and studios in four trend-setting cities (New York, Miami, L.A. and Chicago) for their hottest classes. Who has tried any of these? Which workouts interest you?

1. SoulCycle-A unique indoor cycling strategy—superfast pacing and push-ups off the handlebars to the beat of bass-thumping music.

2. Hip-Hop/Funk

3. Hot Figure 4-Creator and former professional ballerina Kate Albarelli cranks up the thermostat to a sweltering 105 degrees for this barre class.

4. SurfSet Classic-Pop up on the RipSurfer X, a machine that looks like a real surfboard.

5. Physique 57

6. Deep Extreme- yoga moves are mixed with tribal dance to give a bigger cardio burn

7. CrossFit

8. The Bar Method-A one-hour, total-body workout that rolls through dumbbell moves, push-ups and leg lifts at the barre, plus ab work on a mat.

9. Power Yoga

10. Pop Physique- A mix of pilates, dance and barre moves

11. Athletic Conditioning - Knocking out kettlebell swings, walking lunges and "suicides"

12. BUTI - For 75 minutes, you flow from Warrior variations, squats and hip-openers to dancing to bass-heavy jams

13. The Caveman Workout - Dragging truck tires, swinging sledgehammers, throwing sandbags and even carrying an empty beer keg up stairs.

14. Barre Brawl - An hour-long kickboxing-meets-barre routine

15. Zumba

I can picture Cathe coming out with #14 :D

Enjoy!

I've done 7. Crossfit, 11. Athletic Conditioning and 13. Caveman Workout but it all fell under the heading of a Fitness Boot Camp. For a while they became a Crossfit affiliate. Most of their workouts included kettlebells, suicides, running the stadium steps, flipping and dragging tires, using sledgehammers on the tires, dragging sleds and using sandbags.

Wow - not that's some Strong Man competition right there! Geesh - talk about POWER!

Zumba is big here also. :D

I use to go to Zumba classes reliously, but it got old pretty quick.

Cathe keeps me motivated so I stick with her. :)

I've done the 105 degree workout - it wasn't barre but FMS type workout. You really sweat - it feels very cleansing.

The Bar Method and Athletic Conditioning are the two that pique my interest, although I've never actually done them.

Great thread, Natty! :D

You guys are brave! I would try them all.......if they were free :D

The ones that peak my interest are #3, #4, #8, #11, #13, #14.

lioness- you are a champ! Did you just mention you turned 50 last year? [insert double thumbs-up here]

Thank you. Yes, I'm 50. I don't go to the boot camp place anymore. I do most of it in my backyard. I just need to get a tire. I miss flipping them.

well...to be honest...

Some of these just seem SILLY! Cranking up the temp to 105??? YUCK!

Others are big here too, like Zumba. Caveman type workouts are gaining some steam as well.

None of these really grab me though other than the Caveman. Zumba's ok, I take a class once a week and that is more than enough for me lol...

Cathe, any thoughts on these trends? What's big in your area?

I haven't been to a commercial gym in I couldn't even tell you how long, so I have no clue as to what's popular out there right now. However, I would be interested in exploring these....

1. SoulCycle

7. CrossFit

11. Athletic Conditioning

14. Barre Brawl ( yes, it would be fantastic if Cathe ever produced this type of workout! :) )

:)

I would be scared to visit your backyard Jane...I don't think I would come out looking the same

I do Bar Method, and I love it. The classes are much harder than the DVDs, but the DVDs are still incredible. The method incorporates barre and weights and lots of pushups. Some don't like the instructors on the videos, which I don't understand at all. I think they are fine.
