Hip Bursitis

I've not been able to do Cathe for 5 months now :(. I went to PT for 3 months and have been doing yoga, PT home exercises and walking for 2 months. My hip is so much better so I would love to start back with Cathe. My physical therapist said to begin with only 20-30 minutes and build up as I get stronger. Same with the step...no step to begin with. I've done 30 minutes of low max twice and was pretty sore around the hip. My physical therapist said this would happen in the beginning, but to give it a few weeks and it would get better. He said to remember when I first began therapy it felt worse before it felt better and this was the same thing. And to ice, ice, ice and stretch, stretch, stretch.

I just wanted to hear from any of you who have experienced a hip bursitis. Does all this sound right? Any suggestions about the best Cathe DVD's for hip problems? I am restricted to low impact only. Thanks for any help you can give!

I have hip bursitis too. I had to lay off ALL high impact for about three months. It felt 98% better, and I feel great as long as I stay low impact. I try to shake it up and throw in high impact (jogging, jumping jacks, high impact step) and I will pay for it for three or four days. As a matter of fact I jogged and walked intervals yesterday with my SIL and my hips are a disaster today. OUCH. I traded in my treadmill for an elliptical and I actually feel like I am in much better cardiovascular condition than before. I also do step, but low impact only. I did therapy for awhile, but it felt like all I was doing was floor work I could do on my own. So the morale of my story is, listen to your body and do what you can do! Thank god Cathe has a lot to choose from!

I do not have burstits, I have arthritis. Here's the Cathe's workouts I can do without too much trouble.

All the weight lifting ones of course, modifying the walking lunges, squats and single leg deadlifts. It hurts to put all my weight on the bad hip.

I like KPC, LIC for cardio the best. They are easiest on the hip. I can actually do jumping jacks and plyo moves. Crazy I know, but have trouble walking long distances and cannot run at all anymore.

My advice is modify where you need to, listen to your body, and ice it alot!!:)

I've had a bout of hip bursitis twice, but recovered 100% through a LOT of rest. I got mine from walking. Interestingly enough, I took up stepping (without the step) because it didn't aggravate my hip as much as walking did.

Are you able to do KPC or LIC? I haven't bought LIC since this all started about the time the new DVD's came out. I did LM without the step today (felt strange), but since I hadn't done Cathe in a while I was still sweating. I also have LIS and should probably give that one a try without the step too. I love KPC, but am not sure I will be able to do that one.

Thanks,
Laurel

Laurel,

Have you seen an Orthopaedic Surgeon yet? I had a degenerated right hip (left is going but at a slower rate) and at 46 had it replaced.

Latest technology is actually relining the hip without replacing the joint. Don't be afraid of the knife. I know my life has gotten 100% better since the surgery.

If you don't get some relief, try bicycling. The joint does rotate but it's not bearing weight. You could also try swimming.

I had hip bursitis off and on for about 6 years (probably not as bad as yours, I often worked out through the pain). I ended up getting pregnant with twins and not working out for about 3 months. I haven't had any pain since then. It's been 7 years. Now I usually only do 2 high impact workouts in a week. Thank goodness for spinning. I still get the endorphin high without the impact.

I had hip bursitis several years ago. I wasn't doing step aerobics at the time, so I can't comment on that (this happened back during my Curves days). But I did receive a cortisone injection, and was ordered to rest for a little while, and then to avoid activities that caused hip pain (the thigh machine at Curves). It didn't take longer than a month or two for the pain to disappear, and it hasn't bothered me at all since. Hang in there - you'll get better! :)

Hey Dave,

I actually go in the 10th of July, Swanson is my doc. He is really well-known for perfecting the "mini-hip". I am anxious and excited at the same time!

I will be thrilled to be able to walk long distances, wear my heels and feel "normal" without the limp again!:) Thanks for sharing, I am happy to hear you are doing well with your replacement.

I have to stop all meds this Sunday and its gonnna hurt like a SOB, but the end results are worth it. Do you do Cathe?

I do, but modify all the time.:7 I used to be a bodybuilder, so this of course hurts my pride, more than my hip!

I have a couple of the lighter tapes. I use them when the weather stinks. High impact is out for me. I didn't go mini hip, I have a 12 inch or so scar (I guess I can't pose for Playgirl LOL)

My favorite cardio is my 10 speed bike, or chasing my Boy Scouts through the woods.

Prep your house before the surgery> I had to install handrails on stairs as I had to climb stairs like a toddler again for about a month.

I have it. I've been to 3 doctors about it (well, about 4 or 5 years ago now) and they all said due to overuse. I was a runner for 20 years. Did a marathon after about 19 years of running. All that training was really the last straw for me. They said I could keep running but it would keep coming back (after having cortisone shots). The pain was NOT worth it! I could definately run through the pain - it was the hours and days after. Not fun. Now I cycle. I still have to take Osteo Bi-Flex - works better than normal stuff. I feel it when I quit. I run when I'm on vacations because that's usually my only option but I pay for it. I also love Imax 2 so I will do that one every now and then too and sometimes other step during the winter but too much and I have to back off. I have an elliptical but had to try a few to get the right one that didn't bother my hip. Not one of them told me it would go away and it hasn't even though I've changed my activity.

Good luck!

Unless you're a believer in faith healing or divine intervention your hip problem won't go away. You can learn how to manage it or not make it worse.

My hip had "spurs" and pits. Resurfacing or replacement was the correction. I got to the point that to walk I was taking 15 inch steps. Bicycling and swimming were out of the question. I love my Orthopedic Surgeon!

Hey Dave,

I'm not afraid of the knife, but since this is the first time I've had hip problems/bursitis and I'm only 31 they haven't even mentioned surgery yet. It has gotten much better since I went through PT. However, I will be open to surgery when the time comes.

Thanks,
Laurel
