High Point/Piedmont Triad area of NC

Is anyone from the Triad area of NC? I'm looking to see if anyone can convince me that this area has something more exciting to offer than being the "Furniture Capital of the World" and what appears to be a dismal job market (for me and not my SO who has a pretty good offer on the table). Perhaps there is an exciting nightlife? Thriving arts scene? Great restaurants? Any thoughts appreciated!

My parents used to live in Winston-Salem and my sister and her fiance live there now but are moving here to Texas. I will ask her later if she knows of anything good to do around there when I talk to her later. Good luck!

I'm from Winston-Salem!

If you give me a sense of what you're looking for, I could maybe be more helpful. We moved here a few years ago from DC and I really like Winston. I would not, however, live in High Point -- there really is nothing there. There is a great arts community in Winston -- we have the highest per capita contribution rate to the arts in the country, and as a result have an opera company, symphony, theater companies, etc. We're an hour from the mountains and three plus hours to the beach. There is a actually a really big triathlon community here, if you're into that. I don't know your field, but the job market is actually not bad at all. Let me know what else I can tell you!

RE: I'm from Winston-Salem!

i currently live in winston salem. it doesn't have a thriving nightlife. however it is very family oriented. there are alot of things for children/family. not sure of your field but the job market is so-so. just depends on what you are looking for. winston salem is a very nice, low crime, inexpensive place to live!

Thanks for responding! I am a librarian, currently in the pharmaceutical field but I am open to other possibilities which may or may not include libraries (but must include a salary I can live with!). We're not terribly interested in family oriented activities and we are a bit concerned about opportunities for making new friends (it seems much easier for those with children but suppose a case could be made otherwise). Right now we are weighing our options and deciding if this would be the right move. Unfortunately it seems most of the opportunities in NC lie closer to Raleigh but perhaps we are are overlooking something.

Hey Beavs,

I just relocated to the Winston-Salem area about 7 months ago. I am originally from Detroit, MI and I like it MUCH better here. The weather is great and the job market/housing affordability is much better here. I moved for a great job and am enjoying it very much.

This area is growing every day in the nano-tech, bio-tech, and financial services industries. There is a new "research park" in downtown Winston that is focusing on biomedical and information technology research and development. Also, Dell just opened a major US headquarters here. So...there is lots going on.

As far as "night life", well, honestly I've been working so much I haven't done much going out. But I do know there is lots to do in Greensboro - they are building up the downtown area and new restaurants and clubs are opening up all the time.

So, I think there is lots to offer here and am very glad I moved!

I second what Dianna says about Greensboro. I live closer to the Greater Charlotte area but my sister lives in High Point. She and her husband usually go to Greensboro though for any "night life", good restaurants, etc. I've been to Greensboro many times and like it.

Some ideas

There is a big pharmaceutical company in Burlington called LabCorp. There are several hospitals and unversities in the Piedmont, including Wake Forest. Wake Forest has opened this big biotech park that is doing some really cutting edge stuff that has been getting national coverage (like growing new human bladders, etc.) Hope that helps!

Thanks all for the responses. Now I'll just wait and see where I end up in the coming months....
