Hi all !!!I am a newbie - Intro/Question

I have made the decision to drastically increase my cardio this year because I have to lose some weight. In the past I have been more of a mind body chick. About two years ago I lost close to 80lbs just doing yoga and pilates, but then I stopped (cause I didn't have time for classes anymore) and the weight came back on.

I just recently discovered that I really like kickboxing and walking workouts. I was on collagevideo.com and came across Cathe's newest kickboxing video and I was just floored!!!! I was just like "I have to have this workout!!!!" I really like how strong and well cued Cathe's workouts are.

I ended up on this site by doing a search for Cathe and I got a chance to view some of her other workouts. Now I don't do step or weights (weights do horrible things to my body), and I was just wondering if it would be okay to use some of her lowerbody workouts without the weights??

Also what other workouts would be good for me since I don't do step or use weights.

Thanks ladies and gents (if there are any) this is a great forum!!!!

hello and welcome

i would say the kick,punch,crunch/legs and glutes workout you can do without weights. legs and glutes is a killer workout with all the different tempos i am sure it could be done without weights. plus you get another workout on one dvd and many many premixes to have a different mix of these workouts. almost like having over 20 workouts on one dvd.

cathe does mostly step and weights so kpc/l&g and kick max are the only ones i can think of that you do without weights. you might need a ball for kpc but i am sure even that could be modified.

what happens to your body that you do not like weights though?weight training is great for women. helps you lose weight faster with LEAN muscle and prevent bone disease. you shouldn't bulk up b/c women don't possess that hormone or anything just doing light weight training. just a suggestion.

step is just a lot of fun for me. b/c cathe is a little more tricky so the workout is never boring.

welcome again

Thanks for the reply and advice. I was actually checking out the legs and glute workout and I think that would be killer even without the weights!!!

Weights make my thighs look huge when all I want is firm, lean, shapely thighs. I have big thighs to begin with and even though weights do firm them up they make them so big and bulky. I think some women do well with weights (like Cathe) and there are others of us who don't.

So far I know that I will be purchasing Kick max - this dvd looks sooooo good. You can tell Cathe really puts alot into these workouts and I love the premix idea!!! I also want to purchase KPC. These are probally some of the best kickboxing workouts that I have ever seen. I think I will be getting Core Max as well. Legs and qlutes is def. something I will keep my eye on.

well you are not the only one with the bulking thigh problem with weights. actually it was a thread in open discussion about freestyle training that helps with slimming thighs. lighter weights with high reps is usually a common technique in the training. but anyway plz do post in open discussion so everybody can get to know you and you are sure to get more answers to any other questions you might have.

here is the link for that thread. skim through it you might find some nifty advice and ideas.

Many early female body builders didn't do much lower body work, but relied on lower-body cardio (usually running) to keep their lower bodies in shape. But bulking in the lower body isn't a reason to avoid upper body weight training, which, IMO, is very important for women especially, to keep us strong.

You can for sure do legs and glutes without weights. That's what I usually do because I figure I'm lifting my extra 25 lbs that I haven't lost yet and that's enough weight for me lol. That is a tough lower body workout and I don't think I could do the whole thing if I used weights. Also if you do want to do upper body strength training and core training you can get some of her total body workouts and not use weights for the legs. Again that's what I do for a lot of the workouts. Power Hour and Muscle Endurance are good ones, there are a lot of leg presses in ME, Cathe holds a 10 lb dumbbell, but I don't use any weight. Pyramid Upper Body is a great workout for the upper body and it has an ab section as well. Also Circuit Max is a good circuit workout where she only uses a step for part of the cardio, the rest is floor aerobics and kick box. You could seperate the leg and arm weight lifting combos and do the legs without weights. It's a really fun workout. It also comes with Cardio Kicks which is another kick box workout. I haven't tried that one yet because I just got it, but it seems like alot of people like that one.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the great info and advice. I will be checking out Carido Kicks. I am glad to see there are other ladies out there who are having good results without using weights. Amy, how long have you been working out with Cathe without the weights??

Kassia (hope I spelled that right)

Thanks for the info about freestyle. This seems right up my alley and I will be getting that book!!!!!

You can do any workout however you want. I sometimes do the lower body workouts without weights myself. I also do the step workouts without a step. I modify some moves if the ones she's doing hurt me or I don't like them. And, I don't always do the workouts all the way through. Sometimes, I only do 30 minutes, then stop and do my own cooldown.

So, good luck going forward! Cathe's workouts are great!

I've been working out with Cathe for about a year and the whole time I've either done no weights or light weights like 2 8# or 2 10# dumbbels, but I've recently decided to do no weight all the time because my thighs were getting bigger. I have 25 lbs to lose so my legs aren't the way I want them to be, but I've been losing weight and even with doing no weight on leg exercise I've been getting definition in my legs. I don't know if I will need to start using weights once I lose my 25 lbs though. Good luck!

I don't use weights for the lower body either. Sometimes, I'll add a 3lb ankle weight for floor work.

I find that with my bodytype, stepping, lower body work -standing and floor, without weights, along with yoga, keep my lower body toned and tight, but not bulky.
