I adopt several families every year to purchase Christmas gifts for and this year my lists from the school are kind of vague. What I'm looking for is some advice from girls ages 11-15 about what kind of books, movies, and music they like. One girl wants adventure books, and action movies. One girl wants scary movies and hip-hip cds, and the 11 year old wants any kind of books and Hillary Duff movies. I'm lost as far as what to choose. I have nieces and nephews, but only one is in that age range and she's into different things than what these girls are requesting. If any of you have daughters, nieces, etc. in that age range can I get some suggestions from you? Thanks in advance.:D

I am so glad to see this kind of Christmas generosity. I have a 12 year old girl and a 17 year old girl and they both like Hip hop like Shakira and Rihanna My youngest daughter also loves Hillary Duff and I hear she has a new CD out I think would make a great gift, I my oldest also like scary movies, and there are a variety of scary movies. One my daughter likes is Skeleton Key, I would look into scary movies that are PG Books my daughter loves the Harry Potter and similar books, Books in that range might be good, I would go to a book store and see what books they have for teenagers and 11 year olds. Wish I could help more, Those are the things I am going to buy for my kids. also they have MP3 players for $39 at ToysRUs might be good for the 11 year old and the 15 year old.

Thank you for the suggestions. I have always helped families with smaller children so they were fairly specific about the kind of toys and things they wanted, but these kids are a little older and the lists were very vague and that leaves me to do a lot of guessing. Thanks again.:)

Oh Ciddy - what a wonderful thing to do!

Adventure books - I LOVE the Alanna Series by Tamora Pierce. Actually any of that series, but the Alanna one is the first. Alanna is a girl who has magic, but lives in a country that is pretty much 14th century. She and her brother switch identies and she goes for her knighthood. Really great series about teenaged girls as heroines. I'll bet she'd love it.

I see you got some great advice about HipHop - but if you'd like me to ask my DD's - I will. The 11 yo may also like the Alanna series. The next, if you're feeling generous, or get a good deal is the Immortal Series. It's even more fun.

My daughter is 13 so here goes:

Books by Ann Rinaldi (historical), Scott Westerfield (the Uglies Trilogy), Stephanie Meyer books (Twilight), Tamora Pierce books (fantasy/adventure), Sarah Dessen (great teen reads), Garth Nix (fantasy/adventure), Deb Caletti (realistic fiction), Jennifer Donnelly (A Northern Light, historical, gothic mystery for teens), Vivian Vande Velde (Heir Apparent, realistic ficiton/tiny bit fantasy), Judy Blume (realistic fiction), Sharon Creech (realistic fiction), etc.

Music: Pink, Nelly Furtado, Jewel, Aqualung, Green Day, Black Eyed Peas, Avril Lavigne, Rihanna (one song), Cassie, etc.

The best thing to do is togo to a great book store, like Borders here in Ann Arbor, and go straight to the kids book section. Once there, chat with the specialist for that area. They actually read most of the kids books and can give you the low down on any book you might be interested in. They'll give honest opinions and help you to steer clear of the crap stuff also.

Wait! I forgot movies!! 'Pirates of the Caribbean 1 & 2', 'Speak' (based on book most excellent by Laurie Halse Andersen), 'Superman Returns', Spiderman movies, Scrubs TV show, etc

Call you local library and talk with their teen/young adult librarian. In my experience they are pretty hip to what young people are looking for.

My daughter, Amber is 14..she also loves Hilary Duff. She has a few of her CD's...but to name a few of her movies which are really good also;
Cinderella Story
The Perfect Man
