Help with footwork?

I'm brand-spankin' new to Cathe's DVDs. I'm an avid exerciser and have been using The Firm tapes over the last year or so. I got kinda bored with them and decided I needed a new, tougher challenge. Cathe's workouts were recommended to me . I decided to try Body Max 2. My question is, how in the world am I ever going to get all this footwork down? I did as instructed and watched the workout once before trying it on my own. I rewound and replayed numerous times too. So this morning I decided to try the whole thing on my own. This footwork is pretty complicated compared to what I'm used to. I was hoping there would be an instructional portion of the DVD showing me how to do each combo, but there's not. Is there a better way to learn the footwork than what I'm doing? Will I ever get it down? I really liked the workout other than not being able to follow all her moves. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Welcome! I know it can be quite frustrating when you are new to Cathe. I think you're tackling a workout that incorporates a lot of similar type past "moves" she does. I really think her basic step tape is about as simple as you can get of her stuff, but if you don't want to invest in that (being a more seasoned exerciser), I would just tackle one section at a time and really try to break it down. Give yourself a chance to learn and eventually put them together. You will get it! We've all fumbled through her moves at some point ;) I think once you get it, all of her other workouts will come much easier to you. Good luck!

Hi there - I think Cathe's basic step DVD is totally worth it if you are new to Cathe, even if you are not a new exerciser. This was my situation as well, and it still took me a little time to follow the choreography in basic step. But it helped me get familiar with the way Cathe cues, how she puts combos together, and some of her most common moves. In other workouts she does more complicated versions of the things you learn in basic step, so when I tried more advanced workouts I would recognize things! Based on my experience, I don't think it is too basic at all.

I started with Cathe on the workout "Step Blast" (otherwise known as
SB around here on the forums). If you think the choreography on BM2 is tough, try Step Blast! Wow! I can't tell you how many times I rewound and rewound and rewound before I finally got it all down! Then there's Rhythmic Step (RS). That choreography is even tougher. I still struggle with one section of that workout even though I've been doing it for two years. After doing those two workouts, picking up the footwork in BM2 was pretty easy for me, so it's just a matter of getting used to the steps.

Cathe uses a lot of the same steps from one workout to another, but she puts them together differently and uses different arm work. The good news about that is that once you get one or two of Cathe's workouts down, picking up the steps in others is MUCH easier! And, believe me, after 6 months, you're going to be glad her choreography is so complicated. It keeps the workouts fun and fresh! I used to do the Firm, too, but got sooooo bored with it! I NEVER get bored with Cathe. Her footwork is just too exciting and challenging, even months later! Just keep at it, and it WILL come! Then you'll discover a whole new concept of exercising! Discovering Cathe has sooo changed the way I work out, in so many ways. I actually look forward to it, for one thing! :)

It takes a couple of time through the workout before you get it. Each time you do it, it will get easier and easier. Don't add any arms until you have the footwork down. Each time I do it I add another movement. I also started with the Timesaver DVD. It's broken up into smaller workouts. It takes time, but you'll enjoy it!

I found the step work much more challenging on BM2 and LIC. In the past I have picked up the choreography pretty quickly but I had to rewind these workouts over and over and over. It took me a while, but I finally got it. Cathe does do similar moves in each video, but these took me a long time to learn. I enjoyed the challenge.

I think the Basic Step/ Body Fusion dvd is a good idea to get most of the moves down. Then I tried just learning one combo at a time with other workouts. You can skip back with your dvd player and do the same combo over and over again, until you master it. Then learn another and so on. Eventually, you've learned the whole workout. You can also slow down your dvd player to learn the steps. It is a great feeling when you finally can sucessfully do a combo for the first time. :) Enjoy the journey!

Hi tootie,

Welcome to the forum :) .

Once you get used to Cathe's cueing and style you will pick up on the moves easier. When I first started with Cathe, I tacked on parts of the step workouts at the end or beginning of my regular workout. Gradually, I pieced the segments together until I felt comfortable with her instruction. It didn't take long for me to adjust to her style but this was way back when Cathe was only on VHS. Now, the DVDs are chaptered very well and it should be easier to learn sections.

If you continue having problems with BM2 after a couple of tries, you may benefit from the Basic Step workout.

Good luck,

jordan
