Hi Heather,
I can tell you what I did to lose weight over at the Open Discussion board.:) dmd

Heather:

I'm not Cathe, but really wanted to address this. Several thoughts come to my mind:

1) What my doctor referred to as "Happy pounds". I, too, gained weight when my now-husband and I met and became engaged. My eating habits changed, though. He's more of a meat and cheese eater, and he loves his Pepsi and potato chips. Before he and I moved in together, I was eating mainly vegetables and chicken - no chips, no pizza, no soda pop. I've gained about 25 pounds since he and I met. I am now in the process of getting my good eating habits back!

2) Thyroid or diabetes. Perhaps you have a thyroid condition or have developed diabetes or some other medical condition that causes weight gain. These are things to be checked out with your doctor.

3) If you eat less, your body will think it's starving and store what you do eat as fat. It's more complicated than that, but that's about it in a nutshell. That is why depravation diets don't work. They run counter to what your body needs. Think about a car. How does a car run? It requires fuel to run. The faster the engine goes, the more fuel it uses. If the gas tank is empty, the car won't go anywhere. This is especially bad for your body's "gas tank". If your body's gas tank is low on fuel, not only will it stop running or run sluggishly, it will start taking what fuel you give it and storing it away because it thinks you are starving and it doesn't want you to die. What happens then is your body starts pulling from muscle mass to fuel itself, leaving your fat stores to "feed" your engine.

4) With that said...what you need to do (unless you are suffering from a medical condition - and if so, everything changes) is eat more if you're exercising. And not just eat more, but eat the high octane fuels your body needs (fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean meats, water, lowfat milk, etc.) so that your engine can run faster, cleaner, and more efficiently. If you are exercising regularly or are moderately to highly active, you need to be eating 3-6 packed and fuel-efficient meals per day. Even if you're not a regular exerciser, it sounds like you're still not eating enough from what you've posted.

Summary: Exercise regularly (4-6 times per week), eat more, eat better, drink lots of water, cut out the high fructose corn syrup (primarily found in soft drinks), and get a good night's sleep every single night. You'll feel better, you'll look better, you'll start to lose weight, and you'll be able to look confidently at yourself in the mirror again. Great magazines and books to read to help with your diet include Cooking Light, The Abs Diet, and the Body For Life program.

But, again, I'm not Cathe...what I've posted is just my own opinion based on my experience, research, and study over the past 15 years or so.

I just wanted to add that if you're not feeling hungry at all, and are forcing yourself to eat the little bit that you do, go to the doctor, coz something is wrong. Your body is great at telling you when it needs food. If your stomach is growling, eat. If it isn't, don't. But if it NEVER growls, and you only eat because you feel that you "need to eat something", then you really should see a doctor. That's not right.

Hi Heather! You're not alone. I'm only 5 feet tall and after gaining 38 pounds with baby #3 (born in November 2003) I found myself with a lot of extra weight. I was a healthy but curvy 125 pounds before having kids, but the pounds inched on between each pregnancy. After #3, and even after nursing, I was still stuck at 160 pounds. I watched Cathe on TV during my maternity leave and let it motivate me to get moving.

I joined a gym where I now take group classes in weight lifting, hi-low aerobics, pilates, step, etc. I hit the gym twice a week (for two hours) and work out to Cathe at home 1-2x a week. This helped me drop over 20 pounds in the past six months and I haven't changed my diet much at all. I would like to lose another 15-20 pounds, but I know I will have to add a couple more days exercise and return to a much healthier eating lifestyle to accomplish this. Stay motivated, and good luck!

in addition to the rest of the good advice listed above, you should eat 5-6 SMALL meals a day. it is also a good idea to keep a food journal every day. a lot of people who say they only eat once or twice a day may only mean meals, but don't count a bite of this, a handful of that, a couple of chips. it all adds up at the end of the day. keeping a journal of EVERYTHING you put in your mouth will help keep things in perspective. you should also write down how you feel every day so you can find the right energy foods for you.

have a healthy day! :7
