Help Me Name Kids Fitness Camp

SuzMax

Cathlete
I work at a community college and am going to do a fitness camp for kids next summer. Something that has bothered me for many years is the obesity problem among children. I have always wished that I could help those poor kids and then it hit me. I can! I run the non-credit program (fun classes) at the college and I already run a very successful kids' camp every summer. So I thought why not start another one (ableit a bit smaller - to start) to help these kids? I asked our Athletic Trainer if he would help me and he said yes! I asked our grants person if there might be some grant money out there "somewhere" and she said there very well might be. She's going to research that. If so, that would be great. If not, we'll figure it out. I run my other camp without grant money and I've grown it from 192 registrations when I started here 6 years ago to 905 registrations this past summer. The grant money would just give us a bigger start.

SO...I need a really cool name for the camp but I'm totally not creative. Kids Fitness Camp is just SO BORING and nobody would come (see, I'm not creative). I've been doing a lot of research on camps to see what they do and looking at different statistics, etc. and there is Growing Healthy Kids, X-Waves Fitness Movement and Project Healthy Kids Health & Fitness Camps but I want something FUN and EXCITING - and kinda short. I'm thinking 7-12 year olds maybe or 6-10 year olds (that's another question???).

im not a bit clever to clever to come up w/ a name but i wanted to say how cool it is that you are doing this!

GOOD LUCK!! Thank you for providing such a wonderful things for kids in need.

I'm not sure I am much help either, but I did want to chime in on how COOL this is!! I would love to do something similar, especially for adolescent girls.

My 3 1/2 yo DS has a program at his preschool called "Stretch and Grow" where they exercise each week and learn about muscles and such. He loves it!!

To add to the good suggestions above:

How about Camp Move It? You could have the "I Like to Move It" song from Madagascar as your theme song. :)

Thanks for your great ideas! I'm excited to get to incorporate something that I am passionate about into my job. Another camp that I'll be doing next summer for kids is a rock climbing camp. It will be for older kids - like 12-15 or so. We have some great rock climbing about 30 minutes from here and we have a rock wall in our gym for them to learn on. We offer rock climbing classes as part of the "big" summer camp that I already run and we have 4 sessions over the 2 weeks that I run in that camp and they not only fill up but we have HUGE waiting lists. So this one should do well, especially since they will get to go off campus, something I don't let them do with the other camp. We should have some pretty fit kids around here next summer!

Suz I love Cathy's suggestion!!! Camp Move It... :D

I think if you go 6-10 you'll end up doing a lot of games, probably fewer than you would if you go 8-12. Mindy Mylrea has a DVD full of physical games for mainly younger kids.

I think whichever age you target, what you do will depend on how many kids you have. (Which you know.) I've been lucky to work with active kids often and I'm VERY excited about your camp!!! :)

I like Camp Move It too! I think that is awesome that you are doing that!! Shaun T is coming out with some new DVD's from Beachbody. He already has a Fit Kids DVD, and now there's going to be a new DVD called Get Real. Here's the info:

These two HEALTHY and ENERGIZING routines focus on cardio and strength training to burn calories and build muscles; help you sculpt a lean, healthy body; and give you the energy you need to juggle family, friends, school, and all the other stuff that you've got going on. Oh yeah, and BTW, it's actually FUN!

Rock climbing sounds awesome, I think the kids would love it! Good luck!

Hey you guys!

Thanks for all of your help and suggestions on names. So far it looks like the vote is for FitKids Summer Camp. I involved some of the girls from our volleyball team and they really liked that. We're moving right along with our planning and I'm really excited. My vice president is taking our idea to the president on Tuesday (just to let him know about it). Hopefully we'll have a positive impact on some kids. We only plan to take maybe 30 kids the first year to make sure we get it all right. But after that...look out! Gosh, I sure hope kids want to come! I think with all of the cool activities, sports and games we have planned they will. :)
