Heavier Dumbbells

The heaviest pair of dumbbells that I currently own are 20 lbs., and I'm having a tough time finding 25's or 30's anywhere. I would much rather purchase Neoprene ones, but I'm getting the feeling they don't make those heavier than 15's - my 20's are metal and, unfortunately, round so they roll all over and I end up chasing them! Shipping on weights is so expensive that I'm hoping to find something at a sporting goods store nearby (I live in the Seattle area).

I was doing 4DS legs today and when Cathe got to the plie squats where you put down the weight in between reps, I had to use a 15 so that it wouldn't roll away, and I could definitely go with 25 or maybe 30 on that, so it got me thinking about purchasing another set of heavier, non-rolly weights.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have a Dunham's Sports, or Dick's Sporting Goods or Play it Again spots store near you? That's where I got my 25 pound dumbell.

I remember getting my 20 pounders at Kmart, so maybe try there also for heavier weights.

Maybe also ask around at gyms in your area: if they are refurbishing their weight rooms, they may be replacing all the weights with new sets and be up for giving you a good deal on their old ones...

You are right now that I think about it...I don't think I've ever seen neoprene DB's heavier then maybe 20 pounds. I have some neoprenes but I got them when I wasn't lifting heavy. Once I got up to needing 15 pound DB's I gave 'em up and started buying hex DB's cause they are soooo much cheaper! I get all of mine from Sports Authority btw. I've seen as heavy as 50 pounders there. :)

Hi-

One more thing to consider... not sure how your neoprene weights are made, but I have had problem with the neoprene weights in the heavier poundge having too thick of a grip bar. That is, the place where you hold on to it being too thick for my grip.

I have small hands and fingers so I've found that the iron ones have a smaller grip so that I can hold them easier. ( Gloves help too.)

Take care, Lynn M.

Thet are not neoprene, but I was able to get 25s in metal.

Or have you considered Bowflex select tech for heavier weights.
You can dial in 22.5 ...25 or higher...all the way up to 52.5. I got these when I needed to go past 25 lbs/dumbell. I wouldn't advise using them for circuit workouts however, omly for when you want to do heavy arm, back and chest work with dumbells.

I get hex dumbbells at Wal-Mart! Sometimes their selection is kind of slim though. I've also bought them at Sports Authority, and they always have a large selection. I agree with Lynn about the neoprene grips - even my 8s are a little thick. I like the metal hex dbs a lot better.

I too prefer metal hex dumbbells; however, getting them was easy for me because our area has tons of Sports Authorities and Dick's Sporting Goods, among others. I have sets of 20's, 25's, 30's and one 35. I like metal ones too because I can use my magnetic Plate Mates with them to incrementally increase poundage; Plate Mates do not work with neoprene.

Dicks and McSports has iron hex wts up to 50lbs or so. Everything I have above 8lbs are hex wts. My hands don't fit around the grips on the neoprene ones. Also the Play it Again Sports by me has a good selection of heavier wts. The stock just varies, call 1st and see if they have any. I don't have any probs with the hex wts rolling around

I have hex weights up to 40# and I bought them at Dicks Sporting Goods or Sports Authority. I think Dicks has better prices.

Academy Sports always has all the different weights and their prices beat Sport Authority anyday. I've purchased everything I use now from my Cathe step/high step to all the dumbells and I looked at several places including Sport Authority before going back there.

I just saw 35# at Walmart last weekend I think for about $17 each. Their selection can be scant at times for sure. They are the hex ones. Sporting goods stores should carry heavier ones. I've seen up to 90# DB's at Dunhams.

Wow, thanks for all the responses! I think we have a Sports Authority near us, so I'll have to go check them out. The only sporting goods store that I've checked so far is Big 5, and they didn't have a very good selection, but it sounds like Sports Authority might be better. I SO regret buying the round 20's. What was I thinking? It seems silly to replace them though, since weights can be expensive, so I might just have to deal with rolly 20 pounders. :p

25's, here I come!
