Healthy things to add to steel cut oats...

...other than fruit?

I'm generally not a fan of fruit in my cereal of any sort. What else can I add to give them flavor that's healthy?

Any suggestions?

I add chocolate flavor calorie countdown milk & chocolate protein powder.
It gives me my daily chocolate fix. Calorie Countdown has less carbs/sugar/fat than regular milk:) You can find it in most grocery stores next to the soy milk.

I add a few tablespoons of ground flaxseed, top it off with a single serving of yogurt and stir it all up. My kids make fun of it's unappetizing appearance but I love it, fills me up from post workout until lunch.

I had steel cut oats for the first time this morning - yummy! I added a bunch of chopped up raw almonds, which added some nice texture. I also added a small dab of butter (I know, not the best, but I was experimenting, and it wasn't that much), and some natural maple syrup. I almost tried the cinnamon, but opted out.

I'm not a fan of fruit in my cereal, either, but I could see me putting in some blueberries on occasion. For an all-natural sweetener without the sugar, try some stevia. Don't use too much, though! Stevia is VERY sweet and if you use too much, it becomes very bitter. Just a small BB sized scoop is usually enough for anything you're adding it to (sometimes it's too much).

I love to add in egg whites, blueberries/reaspberries, and chopped nuts. Another idea is to put in jelly/jam. It makes a swirl in the oats. Yum!!

I love old fashioned oats, steel cut oats, and oatbran hot cereal and like to add protein powder (BSN lean dessert cinn. roll is delish!), 1 T. wheat germ, 1 T. flax, and sometimes 1 T. Naturally More PB or chopped walnuts. Yummy and filling way to start the day!

Also, I recently discovered Agave Nectar, it's a lower glycemic natural sweetener similar to honey. And just a few drops will sweeten it nicely!

I like to chop up a couple each of almonds, walnuts, brazil nuts and/or other nuts and a couple of dates (no other sweetener needed).

Another source of omega 3's (like flax) is chia seed. Hemp seeds have good omega fats in as well.

Also, try mixing other grains in with the oats: quinoa, amaranth, for example. (if they have different cooking times, start the longer cooking grain with the amount of water needed for both, then add the faster-cooking grain later).

Jennfit beat me to it. I've never been crazy about cinnamon, but I try to add some to my oatmeal every morning after what I've read about it. They say it improves blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure, and that it has anti-inflammatory effects. It is also rich in vitamins and minerals like calcium, manganese, iron, vitamins C and K, and contains fiber. I do like the taste, I just don't love it. But I eat my cinnamon every day. :)

I'm so glad you posted this because for the first time, I purchased steel cut oats at the grocery store today. I haven't had a chance to try them yet -- but I have a feeling it's kind of like brown rice (since you have to cook them a long time versus the regular oatmeal!). I was thinking about adding some honey or a little cinnamon -- I'll have to see once I've tried it.
