haunted and confused.

RE: Islam backlash

Do nurses live by the Hippocratic oath to do no harm? Cheering death is demoralizing to say the least. Isn't nursing about compassion? The poet John Donne said any "man's death diminsihes me". They deserved firing. I know freedom of speech is a wonderful right we possess but I for one feel this is a time to be intolerant of hate crimes even in the form of speech. Someone called a place where there where Muslim children are cared for in NY and said they would paint the streets with the blood of the children. That and cheering an explosion that took so much from so many, it's wrong, wrong, wrong! Sad too. The cost of anything good which comes out of this is too, too high.

I think hateful people find reasons to hate....who ever would say stuff like that was long gone already.

this is a reminder we have a very deep history of our own awful hate in this country ourselves....injustice and cruelty.

RE: Islam backlash

I adjudicate unemployment claims. Most hospitals and large employers have policies prohibiting inappropriate conduct that disrupts the workplace; causes an uncomfortable work environment for other employees, etc. Hospitals and nursing homes usually have policies prohibiting conduct that is disruptive to the patients. I would think these actions would definitely fall under those policies. I have a hard time thinking of a situation in which I would pay someone unemployment if they were discharged for this type of conduct just as I would not pay someone who was fired for making inappropriate comments to coworkers because they were Muslim or of middle eastern descent.

cinza,

I know I should just let this go, but I am so upset at how you and your son view last week's tragedy... to quote:

"yesterday when he and I talked about the tragedy he offered me of the perspective of the terrorists who gave their lives in what they believed to be glorious and good deeds..their attempts to make a better world in the image they believed in.

He balked at the phrase "cowardly acts" ... these were not cowardly acts..

I agree..... these were not cowardly acts....they were very "great" acts from their perspective."

'very great acts'??????? 'not cowardly'????? I can honestly say I have NEVER seen anything as cowardly as attacking innocent people without any warning whatsoever! Hello???? Anyone who believes it is 'glorious and good' to kill thousands of innocent people has a serious problem. Obviously you and son have not lost anyone in this catastrophe, because otherwise I seriously doubt he would be able to be so magnanimous in his 'empathy' for terrorists. My world is ruined, and your son seems more sympathetic to the terrorists' perspective than anything else. That's just great.

i am afraid the meaning of what i said was not clear.

neither he or i feel these are good or glorious acts... he was trying to imagine what these people were believing as they died...and what they died for... They werent idiots without hearts.

what they have been taught and believe makes sense to them....and probably would to anyone who was raised with the same influences.

How humans become what they are is relevant in dealing with this ... any of us could have been born under different circumstances and think differently than we do here and now in this time..

Americans have killed plenty of innocent people also ...
its very complicated and situational... any innocent human could land up doing horrific things....

trying to understand how things work is sane.....

its not supporting....just trying to get a handle on how and why and what to do to make this a better world for everyone everywhere.

JoyceMarie,
Did you see above where Cinza quoted Einstien, saying when people disagree, they don't have the same information? The people who are capable of these acts are, indeed, victims in many ways. Their information has been twisted beyond reason. Christ on the cross asked that the Romans's be forgiven for they knew not.... Understanding them and even empathizing with their horrible lives does not mean anyone condones their hatred and violence. It is horrible but we all come into this world innocent. Hatred is taught. They have no inkling of what we truly stand for here in this country. I am not talking about Bin Laden here but of the people he recruits. Many are without hope and they are raised to hate. I see no sympathy in Cinza's son for the terrorists. He's trying to figure this out and come to terms with it. We are not unfamiliar with violence. We are haunted and confused by it. I have not personally lost anyone either. But what I have lost is most dreadful as I am sure it is for Cinza and her son. I refuse to take refuge in anger and I am particularly careful not to hate. If I become my enemy by being drawn into his mentality, he wins.

and yes my family did lose friends in NY
