Hard Strikes: Question about Boxing Gloves & Heavy Bag

mini-natty

Cathlete
First off, I'm a huge fan of Cathe's pink boxing gloves . I wanted to run out and buy a pair .

Ok, so I'm a big fan of boxing. I would love to invest in gloves and a heavy bag because I feel they would add to the dimension/intensity of the workout. And besides, who does not love punching things? ;):D. So my question is for all of you that use gloves and bag, I was told that I need to be "trained" to use them, as the likelihood of getting injured is high. Is this correct? I know with any form of exercise, you can get injured. I honestly never thought twice, and just wanted to take a jab at it :D.

Perhaps if I ask real hard, Santa can make my wish come true this year :D. I swear, I'm on the Nice List ;)

Advice please & thanks!

Natasha -

I can't answer your question, but I can tell you that Sunday night I ordered those pink boxing gloves! I wonder if Everlast is seeing a spike in sales the same way the Dixie cup company saw a spike in sales last year. :D

I don't have a heavy bag either, but would like one, so I'm also interested in any responses to your question.

Boxing gloves

I love the pink boxing gloves. Any recommendations on best place to get them? I also noticed that they come in different weight sizes. Is heavier better?

Liz-

I got pink 12 oz Everlast gloves that look just like the ones Cathe and crew are wearing (she wrote that they were 12 oz gloves) at Target.com for $28.19 including tax. Shipping was free with my red card. Other sites had them for a similar price, but with shipping charges. I think Amazon had a pair that were similar with free shipping, but the wrists were gray and not pink. Probably no real difference between them.

Hope you find a pair!

Natasha, I just started taking a kickboxing class that uses a bag (I've had 2 classes, so when I say I just started, I mean it :D ) and I definitely think that it would be easy to injure oneself when hitting (and kicking) a bag. In fact, a friend who has been taking this class for awhile said she injured her wrist when she first started and had to take time off (and had it x-rayed). What the teacher told me was to start easy, not use a lot of power when hitting and kicking. But then she said, remember that even though you are not using a lot of power, you still want to keep your wrist very firm. She said that what people sometimes do is relax their wrist because they are not hitting hard - and what happens is that they are not striking the bag head on.

And for me, kicking the bag is what I worry about. I broke my left foot and tore 5 ligaments in it and I seem to have trouble getting my foot flexed enough - I worry about jamming my toes when kicking the bag (we go barefoot, obviously).

Hopefully others with more experience will give you more help with your question.

Thank you SO much Sarah!!! This is EXACTLY what I was told!!! Your post helped tremendously.

You are awesome! Thanks again!

I have a heavy bag - really like it, the hardest thing for me to remember in the beginning was to keep my wrist straight when punching. My hubbie was a boxer and has helped me a lot with form. I kick with my sneakers on, I've tried off and wasn't comfortable, I have the start of bunions and if I hit them right - owwwwsie, the pain! :)

It's great to come home after a hard day at work and kick and punch the crap out something, too :)

Sarah and Ellejay -

I also appreciate the information thanks. Can I ask if, in your opinion, you would also get a good workout w/o the bag, but instead having the gloves on and going through the same motions, or would the decrease in intensity be significant? (hope that makes sense).

Thanks!

I bought the heavy bag specifically for the STS cardio workouts - one of them had a heavy bag workout as an add-on, and I did do it without the bag for awhile. If the new workout is like that add-on, you should get the benefit, especially if you wear the weighted gloves, too. IF I remember correctly, it was a lot of jab jab knee knee jumping jack. It's been awhile since I did that workout, I'll pull it out tomorrow and let you know!

I do think that if I had to do it again, I would get the bag that has the floor pedestal rather than hanging it from a floor joist in the basement. It does always seem to be in the way :)

I definitely get a good workout either way, but having said that, hitting and kicking the bag is (for me) a bigger calorie burner. And it is really satisfying punching that bag. I am sure I hit harder when there is a bag involved than without.

Thanks Sarah and Ellejay!

Pink boxing glove update: they arrived today. :) They have the gray wrist and like the ones on Amazon, so I guess I could have saved a few dollars and ordered there. I hate when what you receive is different from the photo, no matter how small the difference. Having said that, they are so CUTE! Can't wait to use them the next time I do MMA boxing (nope, can't wait for Hard Strikes).

BUT although cute, they stink. They have that same smell anything made of "pleather" and foam has, which always smells really toxic to me. That off gassing can't be good for you, so They're in my garage until they smell less. Just thought you all might like to know, so maybe if you plan to get them for Xtrain you can order them before the DVDs arrive so the smell can dissipate somewhat.

I should also mention that they came on a zippered mesh bag, which is nice for storage...they will take up less space than I had though they would.

Gloves covered ... what about the heavy bag?

So Pink Everlast gloves 12oz ... what about the heavy bag? Everlast? Weight?

SNM said they use the wave master in Hard strikes. I found it on Amazon for about $100; so it's going on my xmas list.

My sister took a boxing class at her local gym where the gloves and bag were used. She felt a pain in her thumb after several hits to the bag. She ended up damaging the tendon in her thumb and had to have surgury. After the fact, she does not believe the instructors directions were clear in how to properly hit the bag to avoid potention injury. I am sure Cathe will give spot on cuing to help us avoid injury. I myself will be purchasing a bag and (pink) gloves, but will make sure that I use proper form at all times.
