HARD CORE FITNESS MANIACS FOR WED. JUNE 9

Today I did STS back and tris, disc 2, had a good workout.

Debbie, hope your ankle is feeling ok today.

Anyone have any good protein pancake recipes you would like to share?

Have a good wed. everyone.

Morning Maniacs -

My last day shift and then I work nights the rest of the week....depressing! I did Ellen Barrett's Skinny Sculpt followed by Core Fusion -Lean & Toned Upper Body segment. Workout was 75" with a double stretch at the end. I burned 470 calories. Max HR was 140...only briefly.

I liked this and I used 2-3 & 4 pound weights for it and found it to be an okay upper body workout....but I didn't really feel it much in the lower body which gets worked by mostly doing plies while you are working your arms and then there is a brief segment at the end that sort of works your legs and abs together which didn't feel particularly challenging to me...so I'll wear ankle weights for that segment the next time I do it or throw a resistance band around my legs, as she does a leg beat segment to work your abs and inner thighs while lying down. I've always loved Ellen....but her workouts are more of a feel-good time than a difficult workout.....but we all need those sometimes, right?

Lori - thanks for your post last night. I didn't know you are so familiar with depression/addiction. Aromatherapy & exercise are the things I use most to combat it. One last thing about fragrance and the reason you need to wear it all day (to get to know it) is cuz (back to the symphony - note aspect) when you wear a fragrance, there are top, middle & base notes....and sometimes you won't like a top note....so you think you hate a fragrance, but if you just give it 20 minutes....top notes "burn off" and fade and then you get to the mid and base notes. I don't know how many times, I dislike the top notes in a fragrance.....but I'll put it on a while before I leave the house so those notes burn off before I go out into public. If I REALLY like the mid and base, and just dislike the top....then I can justify keeping it....but if the mid and base are only so/so....it's usually one that goes up for sale on the Perfume Forum! here's the places I collect oils from if you ever get bored and want to check it out

www.blackphoenixalchemylab.com (Beth - the owner is sheer genius)
www.DSHperfumes.com (i usually purchase from the Essense Oils site - I met Dawn when her shop was on Newbury Ave in Boston while I was vacationing....I stumbled into her shop and thus....the oil collector was born)

Ankle is much better today, I can put my weight on it without screaming. LOL! The splint they gave me really helps. I'm thankful. At this rate I'll be working legs next Wednesday and possible doing some light cardio.

So today was suppose to be legs. Obviously I took a rest day. Tomorrow is my mom's surgery so again, a rest day. Friday I plan on doing Back & Triceps and then probably will take the weekend off and start again on Monday. I'll go by how I feel working my legs next week.

Please say a prayer for my mom so everything goes ok. I'm sure it will but prayers are always welcome.

Good Morning Maniacs -

I just read over the rest of the posts from yesterday. First of all, Laura and Lori - both of you communicate in text beyond what I thought possible. Thanks for sharing so many intimate and interesting details about yourselves and making this post such a pleasure to read.... That said, I think everyone has times in life when they will experience depression/anxiety/addiction and/or any combination of these. I DEFINITELY have an addictive personality and have to be very careful to restrain myself from going overboard on anything - whether it is exercise, dieting, smoking, drinking, sex....yea just about anything!! I think some of this goes along with the "type A" personality - careful attention to detail - pushing beyond limitations - and accomplishing beyond expectation. I don't know if that makes sense (pun intended), but obviously this type of person would seem to be more effected by senses - visual, aromatic, acoustic, etc. Anyway, sorry to go off on a tangent....

Laura - My question was about lavender, which is supposed to be calming and relaxing. I LOVE anything scented with lavender, but I certainly am hesitant to wear those types of fragrances when I have a busy day at the office. I also love strong, musk type scents, but they don't smell as good at the end of the day (which goes along with what you were saying...), and I end up going back to more mellow perfumes/colognes because they have better staying power. Any thoughts would be appreciated. :)

Debbie - I hope your ankle is feeling better today. Hopefully this will give you a little time for some well deserved R&R. And, if you are really bored, you could always make up some new rotations - j/k :p. Take care of yourself!

Today I did High Step Challenge (68 min), which kicked my butt. I was really tired this morning, but still pushed myself to increase the weights on several of the lower body exercises. I also did not eat well last night, but I considered it my "cheat meal" for the week. I had some pizza, a few (5) martinis and about 6 chocolate chip cookies..... I worked really hard again last night at camp and just got too hungry I guess. Once I started I couldn't stop.....back on the wagon today. :)

Hi to everyone else and sorry for rambling....

Cheryl :)

Cheryl - regarding Lavender in fragrances. I learned from one of my oil ladies that Lavender is VERY difficult to put in a fragrance that you wear while keeping it balanced. She also added that it can have a masculine feel and she mostly used it in more masculine blends. I did have her make a custom blend for me once with Lavender in it (for stress reduction purposes...as I tend to be high strung) and it was nice, but I COULD smell the lavender a bit too much for my liking....so I understand what she meant.

RE: fragrance and musk - there are light and dark musks....dark musks tend to be earthier and muskier and light musks are REALLY clean and fresh. Your body would probably like light musks.

I just checked Dawn's site to see how much her custom blends costs these days and the fee is now $575! Yikes....I had it done about 12-13 years ago when it was more reasonable.

For commercial blends that are lighter.....but they are Eau De Parfums (so they last a bit longer). You can't go wrong with True Religion - heavy on the light musk, pear blossom, cedar....lovely for summer and Ed Hardy's original scent or the Hearts & Daggers. Original has strawberry, mango, apple, vanilla pudding, freesia and sandalwood and H&D has cashmere musk, fruits and flowers. Christian Audigier is also very nice. It has a warm amber/sandalwood base with tops of tangerine, pomegrante and mid not of cocount and magnolia. They are all light but long lasting. Always buy the gift sets so you can layer your fragrance......making it last all day without touchups by using the shower gel, lotion and fragrance.

gotta go put my lips on and leave for work.....catch y'all later.

ETA: Oh.......and although we don't carry them at our store - I love Philosophy's Unconditional Love fragrance. I get soo many compliments. I wear it on my day off a lot since we don't carry it at work.

Lora - Thanks for the info! I actually have Philosophy's Uncond. Love and wear it almost every day right now!! LOL. I will have to try the True Religion also. It is obvious that you REALLY know your stuff when it comes to fragrance and I'm sure people ALWAYS ask for you!! Thanks again for the info and feel free to send me the bill!! :)

one last thing re: Lavendar - I do use it as a single note by placing it on a cotton ball and putting it under my pillowcase to help me relax at night.

My uncle (who was my Godfather - who just died from cancer recently) requested that I bring some Lavendar to him when he was in the hospital. Here, I never knew he liked aromatherapy until his last days!

Roselyn-nice workout this morning. Protein pancakes (1/2 c oats, 1/2 c egg whites, 1/2 c cottage cheese, 1/2 scoop protein powder, dash cinnamon and vanilla-blend together and then put on hot skillet until done-you can make them as big or small as you want). It is really good served w/ strawberries and sugar free maple syrup.

Debbie-glad the ankle is better. Big prayers for you and your Mom. :) She sounds like a tough lady if she's already done this once :)

Lora-nice workout this morning; Thanks for the review on that workout.

Cheryl-HSC can be the bane of my existence at times (yes, I am being a bit dramatic this a.m.) good work getting that accomplished. And I wouldn't worry too much about the cheat meal :)

Lori-I would love to see what kind of interval/tabata work you put together.

Yesterday was weights. DH and I did them together. 3x8 and then I finished w/ 10 min on the treadmill (1.5 min jog, 30sec sprint, and 3 min incline walk x2)

lumberjack squats/bench press
pullups/romanian deadlift
overhead press/step ups
overhead tricep ext/bb curls
bench leg raises

This morning I got up at 4:30 because the sprinkler guys said they would be back today at 7-7:30. They did not show up

Workout was Amy's Step Challenge two Circuit 1 which was combos 1, 2, 1&2 combined and 3 with Slow Motion weights done as an upper and a lower body weight segment between the cardios. It was 88 minutes and I burned 409 calories Max HR was only 139. Then I did Cardio and Weights Premix Heavy Upper Body 17.5 minutes 71 calories and finished with Jillian's Yoga Meltdown level 2 29 minutes 101 calories. Workout was 2 hr 14 minutes calories burned 581 calories total.

Debbie, I will send a prayer out for you and your mother.

Lora, I always enjoy your scent descriptions. My problem is I want to buy too many and some of them seem to get kind of stale smelling when left sitting. DH gave me a large bottle of Tresor and Poeme over a year ago so, along with other scents I have been given, I wonder if I will ever get it all used up?

Chery, High Step Challenge is a great workout. I uesed to do the Hardcore Extreme Premix that had that one in it. It is one tough workout:D

Theresa, nice workout again. I bet it is fun working out with your dh. I am glad to see that he is sticking with the workouts:D

Roselyn - I saw a post a few days ago from you asking about peanut butter balls - is that right? I used to have a great recipe for them - it was actually in a Le Leche League cookbook. I looked and looked for that thing and couldn’t find it, but if I run across it I‘ll post it later. Glad you had a good workout ;)

Lora - Thank you for the links. I will definitely check them out. I have one of Ellen’s workouts and have always liked her, too. And yah - less intense, “feel good” workouts have become essential in my rotations - I should probably take more complete rest days that I do, but movement/exercise grounds me and makes everything else just a little bit easier to handle. I’m pretty sure you (and most of us here) understand this. Gentler workouts kinda save my butt, sometimes ;) .

Cheryl - the first time someone (probably a therapist ) told me I had an addictive personality, it really hurt my feelings. I hated that term - sounded awful. I didn't really WANT an "addictive personality," thank you :( It was an accurate term for me though - I've got one, so I know what you mean. Now I see it as a helpful piece of information to have, and accept about myself. It sounds like you have too, and are pretty darn good at channeling those potentially destructive energies into getting boatloads accomplished :) Re: all the posts about fragrances - We may become the best smelling check in on the forum (immediate post-workout moments not withstanding). No one will know that but us, but WE will know and that's the knows (nose) that counts :p. I have High Step Challenge scheduled next week I think. It’s a bruiser alright. You probably needed that cheat day - hope it’s after effects aren’t hard on you today and you have a good one.

Debbie - So glad the splint helps. You and your mom are right there in my prayers already - I’ll keep sending them out though - no question.

Theresa - I really like that exercise line up! Good mix and the order really flows (mind if I copy that one down for later?) I’m becoming a big fan of shorter cardio bursts, too (you might not guess that looking at y’days workout) - good finisher. What did your DH think of today? I’ll type out my last workout when I get a chance. I wanted to save it anyway. There were a couple things I could improve or flip flop, but if nothing else it makes a good template.

Diane Sue - is right (about the sprinkler guys). I wonder if they got scared because they didn’t really know what they were doing - hence the need for the manual. But in that case of course, they just should have been honest with you. That would have really made me mad. Good workout, though - since you used the word “only” before your max heart rate, I’m guessing you weren’t too happy with that. Do you think working out earlier could have effected it?

I’m doing Muscle Endurance today. I decided to focus on full body (with an occasional 2 day split) and circuit workouts for a little while and then hit Gym Style again.

Have a good morning everyone -

Lori

Just decided to pop back in...

Theresa - Awesome workout!! I copied it - hope you don't mind. ;) You are soooo lucky that you can get DH to w/o with you- mine will not even consider it. How did you convince him?

Lori - ME is one of my favorites. It is definitely worth the effort and I always feel it for a day or two afterwards. As far as the addictive personality - I have learned to deal with it. I have not quit anything (really- not a quitter -). I still drink - occasionally too much like my 5 martinis last night. I still smoke - yea, I know....work out....smoke?....but I don't smoke all of the time. I smoke about a pack a week, but more if I go out with certain friends, etc. I also still diet excessively (hence the 15 lb weight loss since Jan 2010), but I really try to keep it under control. I used to workout for about 3+ hours per day (2 or 3 workouts per day sometimes!), but now just do 1 - 1.5 hours about 5-6 days a week. I have learned to deal with being type "double AA" (not just a bra size anymore :D) and aim for balance and moderation in everything. I think meditation, prayer, Yoga and marital arts helped me immensely....

Diane Sue - I would be so furious with those sprinkler guys. I hate it when I change my whole day around to accommodate someone and then they don't show up....happens to me all of the time in my practice.....argh. I hope you get it figured out. Thanks again for the info on the KB workouts - I have my eye on them....:)

Ok....back to work.

Cheryl

Thanks for the well wishes and prayers, everyone! Don't have time for personals again, I'm sorry! I'll be back Friday with an update on me and my mom!

Lori-thanks. I'll be interested to see what you have come up w/; And copy away, it's very flattering that you would want it :) Have fun w/ ME and the never ending leg presses

Cheryl-same to you, copy away :) I used to smoke (I have quit for a year and half now) and I felt the same way smoke/workout? It seems counter intuitive, but whatever. Something is going to get us in the end. I have an EXTREMELY addictive personality and I know in most cases, it is all or nothing for me-and w/ the smoking it has to be nothing. Good for you for trying to find balance.

Diane Sue-sorry that you wasted your time, I cannot stand when that happens. Good workout, but I don't know why I even bother saying that anymore-they are always good :p

Peanut Butter Balls
.5 c peanut butter
.5 c agave nectar
.5 c kashi cereal or oatmeal
2 scoops protein powder
.25 c chocolate chips (optional)

Mix together and let it refrigerate for at least an hour. Careful.......these are deadly

Since the sprinkler guys didn't come and I didn't see the garage door guys next door to have them give us an estimate, I went and picked up my granddaughters and we had lunch with dh. Then we called my dd and she bought her son and we went to the library to get the rest of the children started on their summer reading program. Felt good to do something besides work and try to accomplish things :D Lunch was a shrimp and veggie dish at the local restaurant specializing in oriental food. It was pretty well laden with butter:eek: Light dinner for me tonight for sure. I had a protein smoothie for breakfast. I also meant to mention that the Circuit I did from Amy had the Jefferson squats in it. I did the first set and noticed the same cracklling in my right low back so switched to squats with lowend pulses during the toe in out move to time it the same.

Lori, I think the calorie burn was less because I didn't have time to absorb the cup of coffee this morning and also that particular circuit didn't have quite as much cardio and the power ups were not in it. The weight segments were a little longer too. It wasn't bad, but just not where I think it should have been. Funny, I stopped to clean up and be ready for the sprinkler guys that didn't show. Then I came back and did the Cardio and weights upper and yoga. My HR was about the same during the weights and not bad during the yoga. Oh, and those guys wanted the manual and asked for a screwdriver:0 What kind of repair people come without a screwdriver?? So I still have to resolve our problem.

Cheryl, this is the second day I changed my morning schedule for those guys:confused: I have one of those personalities too. Things have to be clean and in order or I am not easy to live with. I am better than I used to be. I have to stop and tell myself it is not a necessity. It will still be there another day. But darn it, it is still there to do. I feel much happier when everything is in order. That is when I can really sit down and relax. I am obsessive about the workouts too. Even dh says he has learned that I "need" to do it or my mood is messed up all day. But again I am better than I used to be, which was 4-5 hours a day.

Lori - yes...exercise helps me deal with life!! I have a doc appt in the AM and then I work until 9:15....so i can't workout and I'm bummed!

Diane Sue- yes.......that's the problem with fragrance. Most people don't use it daily and go thru it quickly, thus they never need to replenish .......this equals zero sales at work. Another tidbit is that women tend to think of fragrance as a luxury and not a necessity like I do! They won't buy it for themselves and just count on getting it for things like Mother's Day, Valentine's Day and Christmas! If everyone thought of aromatherapy as a necessity (like me), I'd have a LOT more sales at work!!
