H1N1 vaccine

I know a lot of people are getting tired of these H1N1 threads, but honestly I'm enjoying reading everyone's thoughts. I'm really tossing the idea of getting one back and forth in my mind and while I will be discussing this with my doctor at my appointment in 2 weeks, I like hearing other perspectives. I'm in the high risk group so I'm paying much more attention to this then I was when the news first came out.

Ok, I have a question about H1N1 itself; a coworker's child has H1N1. She is still coming to work and everyone is in a tizzy about her bringing germs into the office esp since her child just got sick and she came in right afterwards. She claims that if you were born between 1970-1975 there is no way you can catch the virus. Um, what?! I don't know if this is true or if she is just making it up so that no one complains and HR makes her go home. I tried searching online but found nothing. Thoughts?

Melissa - I think she's full of it. She might not be in the one of the high risk groups, but I haven't heard of a certain age bracket having immunity. She'll be contagious before she starts showing symptoms too if she does get it.

They are talking about people who were born in the 50s having been exposed to the virus and thus their body "knows" how to deal with it but it doesn't mean that they have immunity.

I guess she is referring to the 76 vaccinations against the swine flu and therefore thinks there is immunity who were born at that time.

That being said, just because someone is vaccinated doesn't mean that they are immune and it doesn't mean that they can't be carriers of that virus. They may not get it themselves but they can still pass it on, if I recall that correctly.

Actually there has been talk that a certain age group was probably exposed to the H1N1 back in the 70s and the speculation is they may be less likely to catch it. This is why they think it seems to be more prevalent in children than adults. But there really isn't a good way to determine immunity so you can not just say "I"m immune because I was born at a certain time" As a matter of fact my sister had the flu and she's in her 30s- obviously not immune.

She is in a dream world if she thinks she is immune, since flu virus mutates. However, just because her child has it, does not mean she should not come to work. We have had 3 people here kids get sick with it, and they never got it. The only one I know who got it(diagnosed) has no kids, and is in his late 20's. He was out 4 days.

One of my co-workers is 48, but because of health issues, high risk. He tried to get it and they would not give it to him because it goes to pregnant women and children first. He is annoyed because his doctor said this flu could kill him(and yes, if I come down with it, I will not be sitting next to him, I will stay home and just take the hit of getting written up for too many absences since we only get 13 hours a quarter).

Ok ready for this...she brought the kid in today! She said oh it's been 3 days so the doctor said he isn't contagious. WOW

She's very ill informed. When the doc thought my 4 year old might have it (he tested negative) she said you are contagious for a few days BEFORE symptoms arrive and for A WEEK after the symptoms show. I'd be furious if someone did this where I worked! I understand that some people don't have childcare, but employers need to be very understanding right now and people need to be very mindful of not spreading germs around. (Of course, I'm a huge germaphobe.) I hope you don't get it!!!

I believe the age group is children to adults about the age of 35. Yes it's because of the swine flu outbreak in the 70's. They may have antibodies to help them fight it off easier than the people who where not exposed in the 70s. But as Carola said the virus mutate that is why vaccines are not 100% fool proof. The makers of the vaccine take an educated guess as to what virus strain(flu and H1N1) will be more prevalent the coming season.

Hmmm....not sure about not being contagious after 3 days. I am not sure of what the incubation time of the flu is.
