Got my 1st Kettlebell & ordered a KB DVD...I have questions.

So I went and purchased the Go-Fit 15# KB I found finally at my local Target today.

After viewing and doing the exercises on the dvd that came with the KB I decided I wanted something more as I absolutely enjoyed what I could do w/ the KB.

I'm truly excited about this form of exercise as I was practicing the swings it really got my HR up but those turkish get ups are difficult for me with the 15#.

The 1st few tries with the Cleans well my forearms felt them good so I know I need to work on those. I may need to get something to protect my forearms though as the KB rests on them right at the bone owie. Do any of you get bruising ?

So I ordered Lauren Brooks dvd I've read its a good beginner KB dvd but what other dvd should I get that would help me with form that will also give me a good workout?

I would like to get another KB dvd that will show me proper form , will give me a good workout and is complimentary to the one I just ordered.

Was Lauren's dvd a good choice as my 1st KB workout?

At the moment I just want 2 really good dvds that I can work with and maybe into a possible rotation as I learn.

I have a ways to go with kettlebells and honestly don't know why I resisted them so much.

I've looked into Anthony's Training DVD but man I'm not sure I want to invest in 2 disc's at that price for just instruction, since he does have those minute of strength videos on his site.

Any tips and or advice is appreciated.

AOS Providence and Newport

Hi,

Consider purchasing the Art of Strength - Newport and Providence. I have both and enjoy doing them. Neither of these DVD's are great at giving form pointers, but Anthony Diluglio's execution is excellent.

Here is a link. The Dvd's were on sale for 39.95 this month. I am not sure if they are still on sale.

Hi there!

I'm in the same situation - I just got into kettlebells and I LOVE them. I definitely recommend Lauren Brooks' DVD. I also like "Providence" from the Art of Strength, although I have heard that "The Kettlebell Way", also with Anthony DiLugllio, is essentially the same workout with a little more instruction. I kinda wish I had gotten that one instead. You can find it here:
http://store.beacon-fitness.com/servlet/-strse-1/The-Kettlebell-Way-cln--Volume/Detail.

I also got "Newport" and "Firepower" from the Art of Strength, and I really like both of those as well.

I would definitely NOT recommend "The Kettlebell Goddess Workout", from Dragondoor (check it out here). This is just my opinion. I thought it looked like it would have longer workouts and a greater variety of workouts, which I guess it does. But it is also depressingly grim and has no music. I really didn't enjoy doing it and I can't imagine coming home and getting excited about working out with that one. There may be others who found a fun way of using it, though.

Now that I'm familiar with some of the exercises, I also like designing my own little kettlebell circuits, or even running through a Cathe DVD and substituting some kettlebell moves for some of the traditional weightlifting.

For example: Butts & Guts with kb swings or lunges instead of some of the walking lunges, or Muscle Endurance with kettlebell swings instead of leg presses, kb overhead presses, kb squats, kb suitcase deadlifts, or whatever subbed for various exercises.

There isn't anything of "Cathe Quality" available for kettlebells. I'm hoping that maybe Cathe will do a KB DVD? It would be a nice complement to the forthcoming MMA (mixed martial arts) video.

HTH!

I forgot to add that I wrote some reviews: Lauren Brooks and AOS Providence. See them here and here.

I tried to write the review that would've helped me when I was hunting for new DVDs.

Good luck and have fun!

Hey Vilma,

I think you can get a lot of good form info from Anthony's site. Look at kettlebell training under Videos and Articles.

I have these Forearm guards and really like them but you can use wrist sweatbands or something similar until you perfect your clean and snatch. I still wear my guards. I like knowing they're there because I did sport a couple of bruises in the beginning. ;)

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the AoS w/os. I'd start with Providence. Or The Kettlebell Way with Beth Chamberlin and Anthony. It's a remake of Providence and I've heard that some consider it a little easier because the lower body w/o is a little slower than Providence. Actually, I read one girl say this but I trust her judgement. :D

Lauren's is good choice and you won't regret it. I'm just partial to AoS. ;)

I also like Steve Cotter but his is a little pricey.

Have fun!

Hi, my father has been telling me for years to check out the kettlebells, swears by them, he's a very fit man btw. :)

What weight KBs are you supposed to start out with? I've got decent strength, I usually choose weights that are 5 pounds less than Cathe or just the next level down, so 8's instead of 10's. And some of her dvds, I can match the weights.

Thanks!

Dela, The weight one uses with regular weight training doesn't seem to transfer so much to KB workouts, since many KB moves are full-body moves.

Dragon Door and Pavel (the Russian trainer who is credited with bringing KB's to the US and starting the recent trend of using them) recommend that most women start with 18# (strong women with 26#) and most men wth 26# (I think...I didn't really pay much attention to the recommendations for men).

I started with a 15# GoFit (because that's what I found in the stores, and it was either that or 20#...and the 15# was a pretty red, LOL!). That was good for me. But whatever you start with, it will probably be 'too heavy' for some moves at first (ie: Turkish Get-Up, which I started with NO weight, then gradually moved up using a light dumbell) and soon become 'too-light' for others (swings, which are a core KB move).

I agree with Kathryn.

I started with a 8 kg and I think this is what most recommend for a woman. It was difficult to do some of the moves at first but I was glad that I didn't go lighter. I still struggle using this weight with overhead squats and sot press. I will usually sub a lighter DB for these.

Kathryn thanks for mentioning just using a dumbbell for the turkish get up or just practicing sans weight while I get that move down. Those were difficult for me to do with my 'red' 15# KB (anyone who knows me in real life knows red is my all time favorite color :) ) Although for the swings I coulld tell I can go up in weight.

I was up late last night over at perform better watching Anthony's videos and then doing them along.

I got up this a.m. and I have slight DOMs in my lower body WOW:eek:

My forearms are not bruised thank goodness but I'll probably order those guards thanks Ronda :)

So its a toss up between AOS Providence or The Kettlebell way eh?

Lisa/Afreet thanks for those links on your reviews of those dvds.

I guess the only difference is the woman in the KBW one?

Oy decisions , decisions...

Regina thanks for the link I'm guessing one of Anthony's will be a must have then right? LOL

Since these dvds & bells are pricey I want something that I can grow with and continue using ...I have a feeling that eventually I'll get more but for now having 2 good quality KB workouts and the right size bell will work for me.

My main focus now is to do these exercises with proper form.

Once I get Lauren's dvd I'll use it and see if I feel I should stay w/ the 15 # or go to the 20# KB if they still have them at Target.

Once again Thank you to all for your great replies. :)

The Kettlebell Way also has a tutorial section, showing how to do each move, and Providence doesn't .
There also are some very slight differences in some moves, but not enough to really matter.
Also, if the intro pricing is still on, KBW costs $10 less ( www.artofstrength.com )

I have Lisa Shaffer's forearm guards and I have mixed feelings about them. They work well for impact, BUT they really make you sweat underneath them, which I find unpleasant and uncomfortable, so I don't use them as much as I use some wrist sweatbands that work very nicely.

They come in different lengths and thicknesses. The longer ones work well. And some of them work better doubled (wearing two). Unlike Lisa's guards, they absorb sweat, so you don't get all sticky/yucky.

Re: Forearm Guards

Kathryn once again thank you about the guards.

I'll see what I can locally find here first.

If I can get away without having to order online and try sweatbands doubled up then great. I have some soreness/tenderness just below where my wrist bends actually about 3-4 " from my wrist on my forearm so I really want to get something soon to protect that area.

Re: AOS Providence & The Kettlebell Way dvds

After reading Lisa's reviews on both Lauren Brook's dvd and AOS Providence.

Thanks Lisa I am so ready to get Lauren's dvd here soon glad I ordered it.

* Do I really need to look at The Kettlebell Way since they are supposed to be basically the same dvd with minor differences as AOS Providence?

* Is it possible that I can use Lauren's as a guide for safe moves and just jump into Providence?

That is just one factor between The Kettlebell Way & AOS Providence that confuses me.

* As a beginner who already owns (when it's delivered) Lauren's video would it be complimentary or redundant to have The Kettlebell Way?

With those questions asked my 2nd dvd will be one of those two (The Kettlebell Way or AOS Providence ) as it seems that they are the way to go for learning good form and having a good quality workout.

Thanks for helping to educate me about these products. :)

I use sweatbands and they seem to help enough. The thing I had to get was gloves. Even with just gloves I sweat so much that those are soaked when I take them off. OY! My body is really good at keeping itself cooled off!

I would think you could use both. I'm sure the exercises are sequenced differently.

Kettlebell Way and Providence would be redundant, but if you have neither, I'd get Kettlebell Way, especially since it's still $10 less than Providence (as I already mentioned):

Ooohhh Thanks Kathryn

I have The Kettlebell Way in my shopping cart and noticed the 8KG Kettlebell is that a good bell?

I'm thinking I may want to return my red 15# bell since it seems recommended to have the 18# one instead.

I went around my area and no such luck at finding sweat bands - I am not kidding! Really.

I think until I drive out of town into a big city I'll use some socks wrapped around my forearm lol.

Vilma, check out Performbetter.com for Kettlebells. That's where I've been buying mine. There is a sale until 9/30 and the shipping is reasonable. I just ordered a 12kg and a dvd and the shipping was less than $8.

Are those KB just as good? I'm basically wanting a 18 & a 26 to start .

I'm ordering The Kettlebell Way which is in a shopping cart and just got notice that my Lauren Brooks dvd has already shipped :)

Wondering if I should just return the Go Fit 15 # kb

I just want a good base to start from.

Thanks Lisa

ETA: Just went to perform better is there a difference between the vinal coated and plain ones? Or is it just for looks?
