Gorgeously Green

Has anyone read Gorgeously Green? It has changed my whole perspective as a consumer. I read the whole book while visiting Sequoia National Park and it made me really appreciate the natural wonder of planet Earth. Now, I want to help save the planet for future generations. No more plastic bags and chlorine bleached paper towels!!

Did you know it takes about a cup's worth of pesticides to make just one T-shirt?! I want organic cotton PJ's and bedsheets!...and a compost bin!

I am waiting for it to come from Amazon.com, can't wait, it sounds like it really made you think! Did it have good alternatives to things that we normally use?

The author was on Oprah with Julia Roberts. I want to get the book too. I really like the idea of making my own cleaners but for a lot of cleaning, I use Method, which I get at Target.

I saw that episode and would love to read the book too, but sometimes I just get depressed because organic clothes and foods (especially produce) are SOOOO expensive. Would be nice if everyone could afford to be totally organic. I do all that I can, but I simply cannot afford to pay for organic produce and organic clothes etc.

I bought a few other "green" books, but I really enjoyed Gorgeously Green because she does give links to all the resources as she writes about them in her book.

This book made me super conscious about all the waste we make. I will no longer trash a single plastic bag, knowing that it ends up in our landfill for 1000 years!

I know organic produce and clothes are expensive. I've already been eating organic for at least 10 years. As for clothes, I'll buy only what I truly need.

Green Up Your Clean Up (by Jill Potvin Schoff) & Easy Green Living (by Renee Loux) are also great and easy reading "green" books. They both contain very simple recipes to make your own cleaners. Gorgeously Green contains at least one.

Cotton (unless it's organic) is really bad.:-( It takes up about 5% of agricultural land worldwide, and uses about 25% of pesticides and chemicals used on all crops.

I'm slowly changing my wardrobe over to more earth-friendly materials: organic cotton, hemp (though some hemp clothing companies make stuff that's like burlap!), bamboo (one of my favorites: so soft and comfy and pretty).

Hi Kathryn!

Does that mean you are getting rid of your regular cotton clothing? Or do you keep them and just from now on buy organic clothing?

Do you think the pesticides used for cotton clothing can be washed out? I don't know much about this. I just know that pesticides period are very harmful. thanks! Edie

I need to check that out. If anyone's interested, there's this really great all-purpose cleaner from TheCleanTeam.com that's made from seaweed and works better than anything I've ever used. It's called Red Juice and comes as a concentrate. I read about it in a local newspaper article years ago, bought some, and now I tell everyone about it.

My new purchases are mostly organics. I am getting rid of (donating) clothes that I don't wear very often (and replacing it with organics for the most part: I'm not perfect, but I'm trying!)

I'm not sure how many pesticides remain in the fabric: probably not many. But it's not just whatever pesticide residue remains on the clothing, its the fact that the pesticides are harmful to the environment and to the people who have to work in the cotton fields.
