Going to Body Revival, Pleasanton CA, Sat 10-2

Cathlete
I wonder if I'll see any of you there. Jay Blahnik, Marcos Prolo, and Rob Glick will be presenting, as well as others.

I'm going. Anyone here going?

Summary of Body Revival (long)

Well I took Warm up Wakeup by Blahnik, Stepology by Prolo, Step Brick by Brick by Glick,
XXX Hardcore Abs by Catlin, Bosu Strength and Conditioning with Glick (material prepared
by
Douglas Brooks), and Full Body Flexibility by Blahnik.

Blahnik said that research has shown stretching does not prepare the body for stepping (or any other activity), but being flexible helps prevent injury. So, his warm-ups had no stretching at all. Just light versions of the activity to follow. He encouraged stretching as its own thing (like cardio and strength).

Prolo gave us several combos that play with the rhythm. Lots of 3 and 6 count moves,
always totaling 32 at the end. It was so fun!!! The music all these guys used at this
conference was phenomenal. And the acoustics were just perfect. I surveyed the structure
and noticed that there was a suspended acoustical ceiling. That is what my club needs.
Our aerobic studio echoes like an indoor pool.

Someone was whooping too much, in the back corner of the room, and it got
annoying, especially to some participants in front of me. Too much whooping from one
person. It interfered with our ability to take in the information. I kept looking over to
see exactly who was whooping but couldn't tell with all the motion. I considered the idea
of telling her to be mindful of the rest of us in a nice way, but couldn't identify who
whe whooper was.

Glick is slick. He teaches at Mission Viejo in Orange County in Southern California. His
choreo was fun too.

He said that the Reebok 126 BPM recommendation for step was based on only one research
study conducted on eleven beginning steppers, by Reebok, when step first started. They
never did any more research (e.g., on people who have stepped before). Just some fuel for the fire of
the BPM controversy.

Catlin's class was what I needed that day: Body Bar exercises that mimic real life
movements. It was so crowded that our bars were crossing each other. Good thing we were
different heights or they would have hit. A few did bounce off each other... Catlin uses
music but sometimes goes with the beat and sometimes not. It reminded me of those things
in other people's churches where the whole congregation reads out loud together...
otherwise very informative.

Bosu! What a workout! Like cycling, the Bosu work exhausted me pretty quickly. When I'm
tired I get a silly grin, and I get really upbeat. This might be a habit I have
cultivated but I just noticed it! Other people were grinning too! Lots of innovative exercises to do on the Bosu.

Full Body Flexibility was very informative. I had already learned these principles in
much more detail from Pavel Tsatsouline's book, Relax Into Stretch. But nothing teaches
like repetition (now I've learned it again!) and physical examples.

Here's one: hamstring
stretch. Lying on your back, smoothly raise your straight leg without assistance.
Wherever your leg must stop (often one side is different from the other) should be close
to the place where you can pull it using your hands. After raising your leg on your own,
pull gently on it a couple inches, couple seconds, then release.

Boy am I moving slowly today!

I asked Prolo where he got his music, and he said he was working with a guy in Spain.
Then I should have said, "Yeah well *who is he*?" Because I wanted it. Good instrumental
original music with lots of contrasts... anyway I'll have to try and sleuth it out. Maybe
I'll e-mail him with the same q.

Hope you enjoy my review!

RE: Summary of Body Revival (long)

Wow Connie, that sounds amazing. What a lot to take in and in such a short time but it sounds like you absorbed a ton. I'm guessing that you've got lots of ideas for your classes. You'll be working them so hard they'll all be grinning at you}( :p
You must have slept like a baby after all of that!!!
Thanks for posting this, I really enjoyed reading it!

Take Care
Laurie
