LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-01 AT 09:20PM (Est)[p]Does anyone out there take this supplement or any glucosamine supplement? I have been stepping for about 12 years and sometimes I feel it in my knees. I often do my workouts on a 6 inch step now instead of an 8 inch step and this has helped my knees quite a bit. Prevention magazine has had a few articles on glucosamine supplements and say its a good product. I talked to a pharmacist when I was thinking about buying it and was told that a 1500 mg. daily dose is safe and effective in a lot of people. Can anyone shed any light on this subject? :-hmmm

Thanks,

redrocks :)

I know my mother and daddy take this (not sure of the dose) and it has helped them a great deal. My daddy has a bad back and bad knees and the discomfort has improved. My mother tends to ache in her legs and hips and this has helped her also. I have heard a lot of good things about it and from my limited experience it seems that is a very good supplement to take.

I don't have any personal experience with these supplements, but I know a LOT of people who do take them with great results.
Also, nearly everyone at the barn our pony boards at uses them for their horses. Some of the results have been dramatic.
I have heard it takes up to 6 months of consistent use to see the maximum benefit.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

I've had a BIG reduction in knee ache when
I take this supplement regularly. There are
all types of brands at the grocery or healthfood
store. I just buy the cheapest and it really does
help

In January there was a report on the Today show about a study on just glucosamine sulfate. Two groups with osteoarthritis, particularly in the knees, and I guess it would have been x-rays or MRI's showing how much cartilage they had left. One group was given 1500 mg. of glucosamine sulfate per day, the other a placebo. At the end of the year, the group taking the supplement had either not lost anymore cartilage or had actually managed to get a bit more (glucosamine sulfate is derived from shark cartilage, I think). The other group had lost more cartilage, making their osteoarthritis worse. In January, my knee went out of joint (this has happened before--bleck!! the grinding noise) and I fractured my ankle. I heard about the study and started taking the glucosamine. I think it really works. After the fractures healed, I was pretty tentative and worked back very slowly. Now I am back doing just about everything with impact, and I feel better than ever and with a lot less aching in the knees.

I work in a Veterinary Hospital, & we have been using this for years for dogs, with excellent results. It helps approximately 90% of the patients who try it. In about 60% of those cases, the results can be considered dramatic. I just saw a patient yesterday who had to be carried into the exam room just one month ago. Yesterday he was prancing around the hospital like a young pup, grinning from ear to ear!
These supplements are considered 100% safe, no known side-effects, no monitoring bloodwork needed.
Needless to say, everyone who works there has started taking the supplements & nobody has reported less than good results. It has helped my chronically sore shoulder tremendously, & I have upped my dose to see if it will help my sore elbow at all. Also, I step all the time & my knees never hurt at all. (And I'm old!) ;-)
Check with your doctor, if s/he has no problem with it, give it a whirl!

Hi, Redrocks:
I agree with all the positive comments about this supplement, and would even add that I have had 95% of my meniscus removed from my knee due to irreparable tears 17 years ago, and that only taking 500mg a day has had good results in reduction of pain, stiffness, and that arthritic feeing in my knee. I take it in conjunction with chondroitin and MSM, a form of sulfur. These latter two are supposed to boost the effectiveness of glucosamine. MSM is very cheap, and glucosamine and chondroitin are least expensive when bought as a joint (no pun intended) product. Good Luck.

It works for cats too! My kitty is a tripod and this has definitely helped him in his senior years. It did take about a month and half to see results.

Glucosamine is made from shellfish, so people who are allergic should speak with your doctor before using.

Thanks so much to all of you who have replied to my question. I really appreciate all the great input. I am usually really skeptical about every new supplement that comes out on the market but I haven't read anything negative about this supplement. I will give it a try! I am constantly amazed at this "educated crowd" and how much you all know and care!

Thanks again :D

Just to let y'all know, DH looked at some at GNC for $30 bottle of 60, but then found it at Trader Joe's for $10 bottle of 90. Quite the savings!
