Giving acupuncture a try today!

I'm having a throw down with this sciatica! Having my first acupuncture session today and am curious as to not only what to expect, but of course if it will help. My only concern is that I'm going in for another cortisone epidural injection tomorrow so I'm not sure if I'll know how effective the acupuncture really is. They told me that the effects are immediate vs. delayed so I'm not taking any pain meds and will see how it goes. After all my recent needle pokes, what's 20-30 more at this point?:D

All I do know is that sciatica/nerve pain is about the worst I've ever had to endure. I am SO thankful that this didn't flare on our trip. Ironically, it started back up literally the day after we got back. But, I'm ready to get on with my summer pain free!

I love acupuncture! I did it for ITB syndrome and for fertility - worked both times. I have to admit, when it was done on my stomach, it hurt. It hurts more where there is more muscle and less fatty tissue.

Good luck and please post how it went! I will be anxious to hear about your experience. How many times did they recommend to go?

PS - I went to OSU, too! GO Bucks!

Jen - I'll discuss the options with the acupuncturist today as far as times she recommends going, etc. I'm hopeful !

Go BUCKS:D

It hurts a lot less than getting any kind of blood work or even a booster shot. The needles are really tiny. I think you will notice improvement right away. Good luck, I hope it works.

I'd love to hear what you think. I've been foam rolling the heck out of my low back lately and have been anxious to give acupuncture/chiro a try. Good luck. Come back and let us know how it goes!!!

Heidi - I think you'll be pleased with the results, at least, I hope so! I'll be keeping an eye out for your thoughts after your first session!

Hope this clears it up for you!

I'll be sure to report back. I was hoping for a "zen" kind of afternoon after the session, but right after i have to go to work and euthanize a friend of mine's cat:( So, the cards might be against me today, but I need to do this for my friend.

I'm so sorry about your friend's cat. :( It's always hard to lose a friend/pet/"child"/lifelong companion.

So, the acupuncture was interesting. The needles didn't really hurt so much going in - just a couple did (one on the outside of my ankle and one on the outside of my thigh in the IT band) but they were a little "achy" during the 30 minute wait. She'd come in and check on me and do some minor adjustments and that kind of hurt, but definitely tolerable. I can't say I came out of there jumping up and down that I'm cured - I wasn't expecting to. I will have to say i was definitely in a deep state of relaxation - I was almost driving in a trance state, lol. I'm sure laying for 30 minutes while listening to zen music helped. I go back once a week - I'll give it a few treatments. She claims to do a lot of lower back pain/sciatica patients and states some positive results, so I'll give it a chance!

With the issues you've been dealing with and long as it's been going on, it will take some time for the treatments to work, especially since this is your first time. Here's hoping you get some relief after a second treatment!

You have me interested. I have actually been thinking about giving acupuncture a try for the pesky arthritis. I'm pretty darned sure it could not possibly hurt as much as the cortizone shot and the side effects would probably be pretty mild compared to the shots! oweee!

I'll letcha know if I do it and what my results are.
