Getting surgery ? on vitamins & exercise

DebD

Cathlete
I'm having my tubes tied (tubular ligation) in 2 weeks. I was wondering which vitamins to stop before surgery. I was also wondering if anyone has had their tubes tied when they were able to start exercising. I've heard a week. I'm so nervous.

Thanks,
Debbie D'Angelo

I had my tubes tied and trust me it really hurts, just two weeks later I played with my kids and I ended back in the Emergency Room in tons of pain and they saw something floating around and asked me if I was ever shot with a Bebe gun, so I am horrified to think that one came undone!! so take it easy. as for the vitamins I am not sure on that, the doctor usually intsructs on that, my father in law had back surgery and had to stop taking his vitamins.
everyone is differant so what happened to me won't necessarily happen to you, my neighbor did it 5 years after a baby and was pretty sore several weeks after.

Hi Debbie! I remember how nervous I was before each of my surgeries and I am a nurse. :) Ask all the questions you need answered to help ease your nerves. I am sending cyber angels to calm you and see you through surgery. :)

As for vitamins, you may want to ask your physician. Medicine is always changing, so there may be new evidence out there regarding vitamins and surgery.

Hope this helps! Take care!

Note: I edited this to remove specific info related to vitamins. After thinking about it, I decided to search the Web and decided there were too many conflicting opinions on the subject. I don't want to mislead anyone. :)

My tubal was breeze! was back in the swing of fulltime motherhood in twenty-four hours also. I followed my doctors guidelines for exercise post surgery but I felt great within a week. I I agree with Autumn, ask your doctor for specific instructions and adhere to them! I was nusing and did the pump and dump thing initially until the anastetic was out of my system but need nothing more than OTC Tylenol for pain. Good luck. Gat as much information as you can so you'll know exactly what to expect and it'll help with the nervousness too!

the plastic surgeon instructed him to stop
>vitamin E one week before and three weeks after surgery... it
>worsens scarring.

Wow, that's strange, as vitamin E is often used topically to help in healing! I wonder if it works differently when taken internally?

Hi, Kathryn, you are right about topical vitamin E. Here's a bit of info from a plastic surgeon's website

"Vitamin E interferes with the liver making blood clotting factors from Vitamin K. Stop taking Vitamin E at least 3-4 weeks before surgery. Cigarette smoking can hinder wound healing, so please stop at least 2 weeks before your operation."

I've been reading "8 Weeks to Optimum Health" by Andrew Weil, M.D. and he recommends taking Vitamin C supplements before and right after surgery. He says it helps the healing system repair wounds.
