Germany, Fat Americans, Yoga/Pilates Rotation

Cathlete
Hi everyone! My 12-yr-old son and I returned from Germany last week after having been there for 4 wks. We stayed with some cousins and took a lot of day trips to castles, cathedrals, quaint villages and beautiful forests. Although I'd been there several times, the last time was 13 yrs ago and I'd forgotten what an absolutely gorgeous country it was. We had an incredible time.

Here are a couple of comments that might be of interest.

I had several discussions with relatives and friends about German and American stereotypes. After describing the stereotypical oompa-playing, beer-drinking, punctual and orderly German, I asked them to describe a stereotypical American. The first word out of every mouth was "fat." And it's true! Although German food is typically hearty fare (Wurst, Schnitzel, cake, ice cream, beer, etc) and restaurant portions are gargantuan, most people are not fat. Young and old walk and ride bikes EVERYWHERE because the distances are small and the infrastructure is set up so that it's more convenient and actually necessary to do so. We walked and walked and walked! They also think that all Americans eat fast food every day and when they took us to Kentucky Fried Chicken, they were surprised that it was the first time my son had ever been there! One of my cousins is a flight attendant for Lufthansa and frequently travels to Japan. Over the years, she has noticed more and more fast food restaurants cropping up and more and more Japanese people getting fat.

Aside from endless walking (which was a pleasure), I managed to alternate power yoga and Pilates every day. After doing so for 4 wks, my ever-troublesome abs are more defined and I lost several pounds. (I ate a lot of fattening food and drank beer every day.) Although I've been back for almost a week, I came down with the flu and haven't been able to work out, which is a particular shame, because I wanted to do a weight workout immediately to see if I had lost any strength. After a week of being sick and not exercising, I won't be able to judge. Bummer!

Hope everyone's enjoying their summer!:)

That IS interesting!

I was on a mostly Pilates rotation for 4 weeks(3 days of Pilates a week + 2 days of cardio) and I lost 2 inches around the waist and 6 pounds!!

The Pilates workout I did was the "Winsor Pilates Maximum Burn Super Sculpting & Body Slimming" (50 minute).

I've now started mixing in some more Cathe and Slim Series.

Yes, my relatives in Spain are astounded at how fat Americans are. It is part of their stereotype also.

I have been to Europe a few times and am always amazed at how fit most people looked. Both young and old. And, yes, they do walk and cycle much more than we do.

The people in Paris looked the fittest but I was surpirsed at how much smaller the Italians were, as well. All that wonderful Italian food!

Nice to 'see' you back on the boards Susan, welcome home!
Sounds like you had a wonderful time, too bad the flu caught up with you at home, hope you're feeling better soon.

Thanks for sharing, I'm loving the concept of a 'beer drinkin', schnitzel eatinn', yoga/pilates rotation', I could do THAT for 4 weeks:7. For myself, brisk walking is invaluable when I want to shed a quick 5 lbs. If I walk 5 km quickly (50 minutes) after supper for a couple of weeks I always see a difference.

We're having an amazing summer here although I was a bit uncomfortable doing 'Step and Intervals' this morning as my ankles are covered with mosquito bites from staying at the beach until after sun down yesterday, aaahhhhhhhhhh.....summer:)

Take Care
Laurie

I read somewhere that when europeans are in an airport - they can easily spot the Americans by their weight! While I'm from Canada, I think the same could be said about us.

That's another good thing about Germany - no mosquitos!

Hey, Cathe's German... Maybe she can post a "Schnitzel 'n Bier Rotation/Eating Plan" for her August rotation.}(

Thanks for the warm welcome, Laurie.:)

Hi Soooooooosan!!!

Welcome "home", cutie!

What an interesting post! We were in Bavaria with our kids a couple of years ago for about 10 days and had exactly the same experience in terms of food and weight -- we ate all the typical German chow, drank beer (well, DH and I did, anyway :)), walked like maniacs and lost weight. I must say, I was REALLY longing for a nice light green salad by the time we came home, though! ;-)

Hope you are feeling better very soon and I'll bet you'll find you lost no strength at all!

Hey, BTW, who kept Rocky for ya while you were away? I find very few rodent-sitting services in the Atlanta phone book. Plenty of people who'll sit for your garden-variety dog, cat, bird, fish... but not your squirrel, oh no sirree. Don't you agree with me that that's CLEARLY bigoted???? ;-)

RE: Hi Soooooooosan!!!

Who says he had to stay behind? With the new homeland security, he had to be super careful not to take his tiny nail clippers on the plane, but they just snuck him back and forth claiming he was a change purse.

Once he was in Germany, he enjoyed Nutsenheimers, Beerenschnitzels and Wienermeisters along with everyone else. He also lost a few grams from having to walk along with everyone else, only faster and while waving his tail.

RE: Hi Soooooooosan!!!

Hi Kathy! Thanks for the welcome! I'm feeling much better today and plan on doing Push Pull or Supersets tomorrow to ease me back into my routine. For cardio, I'll probably do Christi Taylor, and/or try some of Cathe's earlier workouts which have been sitting on my shelf since my husband bought me the 27-pack in December.

Since I was staying with relatives and not eating in restaurants every day, I did eat quite a bit of salad and fruit (the strawberries were the BEST) in additional to the heaps of Wurst, Schnitzel and Bier. For the most part, I found the quality of the food (even in small towns) to be superior to what we get here in the boonies.

I'm afraid to post this, lest I alarm everyone too greatly and ruin their summer, but Rocky is missing! I left him alone (after all, he just turned 18) for the 4 weeks we were gone and I haven't seen him since! I'm sick with worry! I e-mailed him every day from Germany - no response- and I'm afraid he may have run off with Fiona. Ever since A-Jock mentioned her in some of her posts, he hasn't been the same-old lovable rodent I've come to know and love. I read in the paper that Fiona abandoned her babies in the uppermost branches of a giant oak tree and hasn't been seen since! (Luckily, the babies are safe with relatives.) If anyone has seen a medium-sized, very fit, gray squirrel with an extraordinarily fluffy tail, please e-mail me or call the Virginia State Police: Department of Missing Squirrels. Thank you.

RE: Hi Soooooooosan!!!

We posted at the same time, Mogambo! You must've been thinking of another squirrel and another traveling mother and son, because Rocky wasn't allowed to accompany us. The squirrels in Germany are red and I wonder if the German government is trying to keep the race pure...

RE: Hi Soooooooosan!!!

Oooooooooooooh. (You can count 'em if you like.)

Well, good luck with Rocky there. Those rodents can try the heart-substitutes of anyone at that age. If he comes back though, you'll probably find that his adventures and hair-raising experiences have built a lot of character and given him some good stories to share with you.

How prevalent is smoking in Europe? Is it true that it is much more popular than in the states?

We all have our sins - I guess ours is eating :(.

It makes me sad to think that we are being judged by stereotypes. I have never thought of Germans as "oompa-playing, beer-drinking, punctual and orderly".

In my neck of the woods - MD, DC, and VA, you take your life in your hands if you try to bike or walk anywhere. A while back, it seemed like there was a new story every week about a pedestrian being mowed down by a careless driver.

Anyway, I hope you're on the mend and feeling better soon!

Susan,
I have to laugh at your post. My niece was in the Air Force and stationed in Germany a few years ago. She said that her experience was that they thought Americans were fat and everyone went to psychiatrists!

Jo

Hi Susan! Good point about the smoking. Europeans smoke FAR more than Americans. Nonsmoking areas in German restaurants are virtually nonexistent and I could hardly stand sitting in some of them because of the smoke.

The "stereotype" conversations between my relatives and me were all in good fun and we had a good chuckle. Although stereotypes sometimes have a ring of truth to them, they certainly don't apply to everyone. My two cousins were anything but orderly and I'm pretty fit and exercised in their homes every morning. Plus they learned my son had never been to KFC! I only mentioned the conversations in my post because the "fat" stereotype struck me as being true as I compared American tourists over there to Germans and other foreign tourists.

Thanks for your well wishes. I'm feeling wonderful this morning and plan on doing PP.

Hello Soosan,

I would like to add that the stereotype no longer just applies to Americans, Europe and indeed many of the developed countries are fast gaining a reputation for 'fatness'. Here in the UK - there has been many government reports into the obesity problem among adults and children. The statistics are pretty staggering and if you come to the UK I think you can see this for yourself.

Yen,

When I was there, I did notice that in London, England the population was a little bigger. Although, while in Edinburgh, Scotland, I noticed that the population was thinner.
