Geek Squad

Has anyone used this service? My PC has been going phlooey all over the place and I am sick of trying to use my very dangerously limited knowledge to try to fix it and making it worse. I was thinking of taking it over to the Geek Squad in our local Best Buy.

Does anyone have any experience with them? The last time I took my pc somewhere for service, the dude had it for 2 weeks. I can't live without my Podcasts for that long!

They cleared the virus off my computer in 2 days. They are not cheap, but no one is really. Take it in to see what they say, how much they'll charge and how long it will take.

IMHO, Best Buy is a rip off with lousy customer service and questionable business practices. I had their expensive little fix it plan for my PC and they were of no help. I ended up calling the computer manufacturer for tech support. I suggest asking around to see if there is a local option. You can support your local economy and hopefully find someone who is interested in keeping your business.

Geek Squad isn't Best Buy, they just have locations inside the Best Buy stores.

The flat rate to fix it was $199. When I had the local dude fix it last summer - he had it for 2 weeks and it cost about $100. I think it was a much smaller problem than what's happening now.

My husband needed new RAM for his computer so he spoke to one of the Geek Squad guys. DH brought in one of his RAM sticks to be sure that he got the right thing and the guy still sold him one that wasn't compatible with his computer.

Ah-ha. My mistake. I thought they were part of Best Buy because at least in my area that's the only place one could find them.

My best friend is a former desktop support specialist - which is how I met him. He doesn't do it anymore and doesn't enjoy doing it, but he was trying to tell me what to do over email. Finally, I just gave him the "if you loved me, you'd fix it for me". So...he's gonna try to fix it.

He's such a pushover.

I have my own 'Geek Squad' living in my house! My DH is a computer whiz! He has told me on several occasions that GS is a rip off because they charge so darn much for doing simple things. For example, they wanted to charge a friend of ours $200 just to install the software for a printer!

The guy who started Geek Squad dropped out of college to start this business. He is a millionare with 1 or 2 small kids. I saw this on TV a while back

Oh my goodness.......I'm gonna open a major can of worms here........a Geek Squad guy was just arrested in my area for videotaping (if that's the right word for it) one of his customer's daughter in the shower. He set his cell phone to "record" & left it on the sink for his own little peep show. She saw it when she came out of the shower, noticed the red "record" light on, stole the chip & reported him to the police.

That's a testimony to the lack of vetting their employees go through.

Now, what that man did was disgusting, pathetic & wrong. But here's my big question: who in the world takes a shower w/a stranger servicing their computer in the next room? (using the term "servicing" loosely here..........)

Do you have restore cd's???
If you do back up what you can't do without and put them in reboot.
Completely reinstall windows. F-Disk and reformat option. It will take some time to put the software back in , but it tells you what to do. It is easy..

I had a friend in high school who was a really hot little cutie....and she knew it. She used to love to sunbathe when the guys who were painting the outside of her house were there.

OK...it's not the same thing....it just reminded me of her.

OK..but that's a far cry for a computer geek who probably sports a pocket protector and a Star Trek lunch box ;-) (just kidding!)

You're not kidding! That guy who was painting her house was the hottest guy in town. He was a thing of beauty....I hear he hit the wall in his mid-30's though.

Well, that's just what my mother told me. I never saw him after I was 20. He was 8 years older than me, I met him when I was 15 and Mom was never too happy about our friendship. It was always very innocent on my part, but we "tested the waters" when I was 18. Felt like kissing my brother....

When I told my mother about it a few years later, that's when she let me know he didn't age well.

AHHHH! What's up with that? 23 year old flirting with a girl who doesn't even have a driver's permit! Seems pretty creepy now that I'm a mom.

The biggest thing is sorting out whether you have a software issue or hardware. Most "phoeey" conditions are software.

There are wonderful free spyware programs, try Lavasofts Adaware, to clean all that wonderful junk thats left behind even by the most conservative web surfing.

Then you can run a program called CCleaner, which will also clean all those nasty history files. It will also run an analysis to allow you to clean up system issues.

Then after all that run a disk defrag on your disk, My Computer>right click on your hard drive to pull up properties, click the tools tab and chose defrag this drive.

All of the above should run you about 2 hours of run time.

My home network consists of 4 desktops (1 linux) and 2 laptops and I probably don't spend more than an hour a week maintaining it. And teenagers are using 3 of those desktops.

I've got the spyware programs and run them all the time and I've defragged. I've done the file cleanup utility.

It's just being so weird. I can't open my iTunes because I get a message that there's a problem with my audio configuration. Thanks for THAT message! Could it be any more vague? And HOW could there be a problem with my audio configuration today when it was fine yesterday? I tried reinstalling iTunes and Quicktime....didn't work. Tried reinstalling the driver...didn't work.

And I can't launch AOL. I have reinstalled that numerous times. It's fine, then when I reboot the system, it's not fine anymore.

I can't find my stinking XP Professional disc either! I'm considering using this as an excuse to upgrade to Vista, but am afraid I'll spend the money and it won't work.

If you think you have problems now just upgrade to Vista.

If you are even remotely thinking about Vista, buy a new computer that has it preloaded. The drivers aren't written for your old equipment yet, this is the worst upgrade from Microsoft yet. A few programs won't even run on Vista.

Is it possible that a competing program has taken over the properties of the audio files you are trying to run? Whenever you load something like Quicktime it asks you if you want it to be the default for files with the following extensions ....

When you reinstall a program are you using the control panel to remove it first? Remove it, reboot then reinstall it.

There's a real cool program called Spybot Search and destroy. When you install it, you are asked if you want a program called TeaTimer installed. answer yes. It stops programs from changing your registry settings. It will ask you if its ok.
