Gas - Beano

I don't know about any of you -- but with eating all this clean food, I've got more gas then ever -- it's pretty embarrising. I've never tried the Beano -- has anyone tried it and does it work?

I've also noticed that for me, it's extremely important not to overeat anything. Your body does need to get used to the new way of eating, but by making sure you spread your food out during the day, your body will process it a lot better. Also, eating fruit after your other food will create a lot of gas.

I find that there are certain foods that are real gas producers. For example, when I gave up isolated and concentrated soy protein (like in smoothies and protein bars) my gas production decreased dramatically.

Also, eating fruits either before other foods, or by themselves, can help reduce gas.

(Supposedly, humans pass gas on average 12 times per day! According to John Robbins, it helps prevent colon cancer...but I'm not sure if that's true, or if that's just his excuse for 'passing'! LOL!).

I have started using Beano when I eat things like beans. Beans seem to produce more gas than other foods for me. It really seems to help me out. So I would recommend trying it.

I'm with you Catherine. My body has never gotten used to it either. Beano only helps occassionally. Recently, I've been reading YOU on a Diet and they suggest taking psyllium or in YOU the Owners Manual they say a probiotic. Personally, I have not tried either, but I started researching them and might give one a try.

Kathryn - Dr. Oz, who has been on Oprah a couple times and also coauthor of both of the books mentioned above, says that the average person passes gas 14 times/day. So the doctor you mentioned must be right.

Very interesting, I just purchased the liquid Beano today. They have the pill form also. I am wondering how to ingest the liquid. It just says "add 5 drops per serving". Do you pour it directly on the food?

Try ginger. You can add ginger powder to dishes you are cooking but I just eat it in the form of candied ginger. Just a piece or two seems to help me when I am in need.

I also have this problem but it's not just the gas that bothers me. My stomach bloats so much say, after a couple of bowls of lentil soup or something, that I look 7 months pregnant and it lasts for hours. Even a high-fiber cereal or a veggie chili will do me in. It's a horrible feeling!!!!

I've used Beano (or the generic brand) for years when having high fiber meals, such as bean soup, a salad and whole grain bread ... it helps a lot ... doesn't eliminate the problem entirely but helps a lot. The liquid form goes right on the food ... take either form with the first bite or three of food for most effectiveness. Sometimes taking a charcoal tablet will also help. Deb:)

beano works, but you have to figure out what makes you gassy. for me, i think breathing gives me gas. one of my friends called yesterday and asked me if i was responsible for the smell in nyc the other day!

seriously, soy, onions, broccoli, and dairy. for dairy there is always lactaid tablets.

there is a book, "the gas we pass". by the same author as "everyone poops". its part of life, but it is also fun to walk away....

Just be careful not to light any matches in enclosed spaces. Sorry, I'm punchy this morning. Couldn't resist......

Suri, I agree w/you totally. If I breath - my belly grumbles!!!x( I work in an office and by noon, my belly is making so many noises it isn't funny, and by 5pm, I'm basically miserable! I'm like the girl that was on Oprah that says she doesn't stay w/friends in a hotel room and schedules everything accordingly!

It was so funny. The doctor on Oprah said, just walk to another corner and pass gas and walk away, but be sure to shake a little or it will stay with you!!!

i know my friends must love me. they put up with me. they know by the weird smile on my face that they need to be careful. actually, vacations are the worst. i am one of those who needs my bathroom and has a hard time going in strange places. need i say more?
