Frozen Blueberries

I just bought a huge bag of frozen blueberries. I thought they would be great in my Fage but IMO they are NASTY!! It's like eating tiny dehydrated bitter berries. Is there something I can do to make them taste better? What else can I do with these?

Maybe you just got some bunked up berries?

I eat frozen blueberries (and other frozen fruit) all the time. If you let it thaw all the way they get weirdly squishy, though. If I eat berries and yogurt, it's normally post work out. I toss a big pile of berries on a big scoop of Fage or plain FF yogurt and drizzle w/ a bit of honey. I let it sit on the counter to thaw a little bit while I shower, then when I come back it's perfect. I also like my frozen berries with low fat buttermilk and a drizzle of honey - yum!!!

I like Dole the best, then Jewel (Albertsons) store brand, last is probably the Great Value from Walmart. Fresh pick from home or the blueberry farm freeze even better, in my opinion, but that's only good for part of the year.

A couple of brands also sell mixes designed for smoothies - there's a pink bag (yoplait?) and Dole - those are both pretty good.

Maybe try a different brand?

ETA: They are also yummy mixed into uncooked old fashioned oats w/ buttermilk and a honey drizzle for breakfast. Yeah, I like buttermilk. Discovered it about a year ago. Oddly addicting. :)

I use frozen blueberries to make Smoothies. I mix the berries with ice, some protein powder and vanilla low fat yogurt. Yummy. You may need to add water to adjust to your preferred consistency. Sometimes I add a banana as well.

I had bought the wild blueberries from costco, and they actually were not as tasty as regular ones, but worked fine in smoothies with other fruit like strawberries and bananas.

frozen blueberries are absolutely my son's fav. food. he actually doesn't like the fresh kind that much. i think maybe because sometimes there are stems, and the texture is different. frozen blueberries are like popsicles in his mouth lol.
i think you must have just gotten a bad bag. maybe try a different brand as others suggested. i have noticed that organic blue berries are tiny compared to reg. frozen berries.
maybe try them in a different food. in cereal, oatmeal, cream of wheat, pancakes( you could make the protein powder version), smoothies. recently, i made a 'apple crisp' with chopped fresh apples, lowfat granola cereal sprinkled on top, and baked in the oven. you could do the same with berries or other fruit. i love my grandma's apple crisp, but i just can't handle all that butter now of course. put some cool whip on top, and it's just like it's soposed to taste to me. my kids loved it too :)

I think I let them thaw out too much. I made a batch of protein pancakes this morning and used the blueberries in a sort of compote and they were amazing!!!

Thanks for all the ideas on how to use these babies. I will definitely be trying some out!

Yeah, I like them in smoothies but I don't like them just thawed and plain--the texture is really off for me. Glad you had some success with them.

I like to mix them right out of the freezer with my morning oatmeal; they thaw and cool off the piping hot oatmeal to a comfortable temperature for eating. I also use them in smoothies, with frozen banana, frozen strawberries, protein powder, and enough soymilk to make it the consistency I like.

I remembered this post and bought some frozen blueberries to put on my greek yogurt.

I just put some frozen blueberries in the bottom of the bowl and dumped the yogurt on top and left it on the counter for about 10 min. I came back thinking the blueberries would be starting to unthaw and the darn things froze up the yogurt solid !

Too funny.....

are you defrosting them first? I eat them and frozen raspberries everyday in my oatmeal, cottage cheese and Fage. With the Fage, however, I'm including chocolate protein powder and some Stevia. I really like to take about 1/4 cp of berries and heat them in the microwave for about 45 seconds, then dump them in my oatmeal for breakfast.

They'll never be as good as fresh, of course, but we only have maybe 2 months out of the year where you don't need to take a 2nd mortgage out to buy them fresh.

Also keep in mind that blueberries don't keep well in the freezer for very long - maybe a few months. After that, I've found that the skin gets tough. I've noticed this both with store-bought frozen berries and berries that I've frozen myself.
