Foods you're too scared to try?

The Sushi Virgin thread gave me the inspiration for this:

Does anyone besides me have foods they think will taste so horrible that they've never tried one little bite?

For me, eel sushi will not happen nor will Tofutti "ice cream" or pigs feet or tripe.

Any other cuisine scaredy-cats out there?

Well, I don't eat meat, so any animal is out, though not really out of fear.

Stuff I'm afraid of are things like most frozen, Dominoes, or Pizza Hut "pizza";hamburger helper mix-type things (dry or frozen); those packages of dried sauces; canned frosting; non-dairy anything that should be dairy; stuff whose ingredients look like a periodic table; etc. I don't really see any "food" in that stuff. (Basically, anything that Sandra Lee uses to make her semis.)

most things that come from the sea (both raw and cooked!) with the exception of the few types of fish I already know I like.

anything that comes in the "giblets" bag when you buy a whole bird with the exception of chicken liver cause I have been eating that for years!

have to agree with tripe and pigs feet and I'll add pigs knuckels too!:D

this could probably be a very long list but I'll stop here!:p

Haggis

Anything that used to be an organ (tripe, liver, pig stomach, etc)

Anything raw, especially seafood (although I love seafood cooked:))

The first thing I thought of was sardines or smoked oysters in a can... I don't know if the taste would get me as much as the texture.

There isn't anything I haven't tried once if it's been introduced to me... yet.

The only thing that I wouldn't try, that I know some people eat here, is some sort of cow brain/tongue/organ mixture. Nasty. My grandma was raised on a farm during the depression, so they did what they could and used everything they had. She told me that they would scramble the... let's call it stuff, because I can't type what she really said. But that's what they'd eat, they made sandwiches out of it... Nasty. It might have tasted good - some people may still like it, but it sounds nasty. I am soooo grateful that I am not faced with having to eat that or starve! I might choose to starve.

I don't think I would eat fried spiders. I heard that they do that in part of Asia. I don't plan on ever visiting those parts. ;)

Pigs feet are delicious - seriously.

Fish eye soup! I understand that's a staple in Chine, but I will NEVER even touch it!

My DH did while in China, but he didn't actually eat the eye! So, I'm not sure if that counts!

sauteed with tomatoes and onions and eaten with rice, canned sardines are very good. Straight out of the can (with no preparation)? gag.

I'm scared to try raw seafood, actually any raw animal flesh. Tofu, I can't get down with that at all.

Has anyone ever seen an episode of Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel? The host is named Andrew Zimmern and he goes around the world and eats anything and everything the locals serve him - and I mean anything. ANYTHING. And he often loves what he eats. My friend loves that show and when I visit and have to watch it I sit there most of the time fascinated that he can eat that stuff?

I can't watch that show! I'm so afraid that they'll do one of spiders and I have an extremely serious phobia! I can't even watch them when they briefly show up in movies or on tv. My DH has to tell me when it's gone! I freak out so badly that I can go into shock!

Ewwwww!

LOVE this show, . . and like Andrew I too will try mostly anything. The only exception would be the worms and spiders/insects (I might out of desperation but that's a whole other show "Man versus Wild") but I'd try eyeballs and guts, . . . . really as long as the sauce that comes with it covers up what it actually is, . . I'll eat it. I know it may sound gross but it really is an appreciation and respect of culture. A lot of these places that he visits thrive on eating all of what they kill. They use every part of the animal and I mean every part and they will eat things that Americans normally would not, . . although in all honesty I'd rather eat freshly cooked tripe and pigs feet than spam or veinna sausages.

Tricia, . by the way love the new avatar!!! You look smokin!

I agree! Holy mother of god, please no.....

Me too! Oh no, no, no NO Tongue for me, thanks. Have you seen those huge THINGS at the store. Gagorific.

Although, I have had chocolate covered crickets, and chocolate covered ants. Sort of similar to chocolate covered raisins.

No Dog, no monkey brains. ugh.

When we travel out of the US of A, I suggest to the kids to order something identifiable. Like prawns.

Mine to add to this list - Offal. Rocky Mountain Oysters. aka Bull testicles. I am not going to eat balls. Nope.

Tricia does look smokin' hot. :D:D:D

Me too! We were watching Planet Earth the other night and a seemingly endless spider segment came on. I had to cover my eyes and ask DH when it was over. I also have a hard time watching Bizarre Foods, but can handle it in small doses.

I've had tripe, it's not all that great. I would never eat 'weird parts' like eyeballs or testicles. But most things I'm willing to try at least once.

I could never do eyeballs. I always imagine that some liquid will come out and squirt me in the eye. I can't even stand looking at fish eyes and demand that the head be cut off prior to eating it.

As a vegan, same here.

And actually, there's not much that disgusting in the plant kingdom that I can think of (though eggplant is something I avoid because I think it's a bit gross).

Years ago, I had a discussion with a friend who, like me, had recently gotten back to the US from France. She was talking about dinners where she was served disgusting stuff like brains and tripes, and I was laughing, saying that being a vegetarian (which I was then), that is kind of a blanket rejection of many potentially disgusting "foods."

When I did eat critters, I refused to eat oysters and snails, the idea of which I found repulsive. (I also refused to eat deer or pheasant, or goose, or any animal that wasn't part of the typical 'food' animals I was used to).

Oh my gosh, that is so true!!! Almost everything disgusting has to do with animals. There is nothing disgusting in the plant kingdom, is there? Except for brussel sprouts... I really don't like those (but I do like eggplant ;)).

How about okra? I love to eat it in gumbo but it is almost like eating snot if you eat it plain.

I've only had okra in soups, and it's fine there, but slimy, plain okra? Yeah, that's another one I'd say no to (as well as brussel sprouts...though brussel sprout sprouts or microgreens might be okay).

LOL!! I've actually eaten those for breakfast.

My dad used to feed us a lot of "weird" stuff when my sisters and I were kids. So I honestly can't think of anything that I wouldn't at least try because I thought it would taste bad...the exception might be Fugu...cuz that can kill you if not prepared exactly right.
