Food processors???

Anyone here have a food processor? Or something called a Vita-Mix? Seems like quite a few vegetarian recipes call for the use of a food processor, and I was just wondering if any of you guys have one, and could you recommend a brand/model? Also, what kinds of things do you use it for?

Thanks in advance! :D

Emily, I don't because I looked into them & they're like $159. Forget that! I have enough gadgets already. You don't need one of those to enjoy vegetarian food. Just look online for other recipes.

Look up vegsource.com or go to a half-price book store for a lowfat, vegetarian recipe book

I have a food processor and absolutely love it! It cost me around $40-50, so it's not a top 'o the line sort of thing but it does the job. I don't recall the brand but it's something that can be found at Target or Wal-Mart. It's particularly useful for making tofu "ricotta cheese" for lasagna and cannelloni (sp?).

I also use it to make sunflower seed burgers, which is basically falafel mix, sunflower seeds and cornmeal ground in the food processor. Then soy sauce mixed with a little water is mixed in to form patty consistency (I also like to add a tiny bit of dijon mustard). The patties are then cooked however you want: e.g. fried, baked, Foreman grill, etc. :9

Lunacat - wow, thanks! You're making me hungry! I didn't realize food processors could be had for $50 or less. I may have to get one.

I didn't even know what a Vita-mix was - I just saw it mentioned in a recipe. Is it really just a juicer??? For $159, I don't think I'll be getting one of those. And like you, Marla, I don't have room for tons of kitchen gadgets!

Thanks for the input guys! :D

I have what was called a food processor in 1986. It is a cuisinart. I still have it and love it. When one is making cheesecake crust or grating cheese, one can do it so easily with the device. I use it for making crusts and soups etc. It is the best thing. It only cost $110.00 at the time, I know they are really expensive now. I swear on it, it is a great investment.

A Vitamix grinds, blends, juices, cooks soups, freezes ice cream. It does lots of things. I don't have one, but a friend does, and he gets a lot of use out of it. It's VERY noisy, though, and costs something like $399 or $499, depending on the model. I get flyers advertising them every once in a while, and they also sell refurbished models for less.

A food processor is useful because it does the work of several gadgets: graters, blenders, manual chopping with knives, immersion blenders. But you can usually get by without having one for most recipes.

I also have a cuisinart but I fear I got the wrong size. It's just myself and my husband so I thought I'd get the smaller model. Many vegetarian recipies call for more ingredients than I can fit in it so I end up dividing up ingredients to get everything blended. If you're planning to get one, I would suggest getting the larger size. And by the way, it does come in handy. If I could affort the vita-mix I would love to have it! My parents have one and they use it for eveything. They make soup, soy ice cream, smoothies, creamy tofu, and just about anything.

I LOVE my Cuisinart. I also have the little Cuisinart for chopping herbs and other quick things (chopping an onion or making bread crumbs).

Cuisinart is the gold standard. There are varoius sizes. Choosing a model depends on how many servings you typically prepare. I also recommend the Mini-prep by Cuisinart for small jobs like salad dressings etc.

I have a food processor. I think I got it at Wal*Mart and it's made by Hamilton Beach. It's a great gadget. I use it for tons of stuff, from making hummus, to making pastry to making pesto, etc. etc. I think it was around $50 Canadian. Well worth it.
