Floor for exercise room

Winter

Cathlete
Hi Everyone,

We are building a basement and I will have a nice size exercise room in it. The basement will be cement. We will not be in this house for more than 3 years. I am trying to decide what type of floor I should have. Real thin carpet or maybe just a very large exercise mat. I really don't want to spend a lot of money since we will not be there long. Do you guys have any ideas. Appreciate it.

I use Home Depot mats on the cement floor in my basement. They aren't exactly dirt cheap but you can take them with you when you move again.

I really like them. There is just enough cushioning for high impact and they won't dent under your step or your heavy weights. You can turn and pivot on them without hurting your knees too.

They only thing they don't work for is pushups - if your hands are sweaty you slip around alot.

Hope this helps!

I used to work out on real thin carpet over cement subfloor in a living room and it was hard on the knees. I got those matts too, they are a great value, I would get a LOT of them and fill the room with them so you don't have to concentrate on staying on them while doing cardio. Maybe find a way to anchor them to the floor so you don't slip around. Overall, not a bad $.

I used 1 x 2s and plywood and built an 8 foot by 8 foot aerobic floor area in my basement. I used 4 packs of the home depot mats on top for more cushion. Since the home depot mats are setting on top of wood they barely slide. This has worked real well for me. The low wooden platform got me off the floor but the home depot mats made a huge difference.
