flat bench

I'm gonna say yes. I'm 5'8", tallish for a woman, but hardly amazonian, but I find the bench to be a bit short and uncomfy. Plus, its hard. A bench has a little padding. I got a bench at Walmart maybe 2 months ago for less than $50. Nothing fancy, but it works. It supposedly holds 400lbs (haven't tried THAT yet :p), and it goes flat, incline, decline, and straight like a chair. I'd say its roughty 45* incline/decline. It also folds nearly flat to stand it against a wall, or store it under something, but I've never done that. Its fairly light too, so its easy to move around if you have a small workout space like I do. I put it together myself, and it took about an hour. Was easy enough, just the whole thing went together with allen wrenches, which is the worst tool ever invented. Now that I have a bench, I don't know how I did without one. I LOVE it. I just didn't want to spend a ton of money, so I'm glad I found a nice, comfy, sturdy cheap one.

Yes and no.
A bench is worthwhile, one that is only a flat bench isn't as much.
Definitely go for one that allows for at least one incline (if not more). I bought one through Amazon that has options for flat, 3 levels of incline (I think), a seat with a vertical back (good for overhead presses) and decline.

In total agreement..... A Flat Bench Only doesnt seem like a worthy investment if you are happy with using your step...I use my bench alot tho because of the inclines & decline options
