Firefighters and why they are so buff!!!!

This is funny....

My brother while working one day seen this guy who is a firefighter and just came out and asked him how he got such "big guns". See, my brother is now just starting to workout himself. Anyhow, the guy says, "From rescuing all the fat people out of buildings, that's all". LOL!

Hold the phone! Firefighters are buff? Not in my town! LOL!

This is a small town & for the most part they spend their 24 hour shifts sitting around watching cable TV. In fact, there have been some incidences of pornography rentals but I put a stop to that post haste--what would the public say if they found out? Sheesh!

Don't get me wrong--when they have to work it's serious business & they work hard--but it's really a pretty sedentary job.

My BF is in pretty good shape, but that's b/c he owns a tree service, which is about as far from sedentary as you can get. Very physically demanding work. Also, the FD has a gym where he works out twice a week (that's right girls, the men can work out twice a week & get away w/it--we on the other hand have to make it our second job x( ).

Anyway, the vast majority of FFs I know are large, sloppy & haven't seen their toes in at least 5 years. At least half of them smoke. Paragons of fitness they are not.

LauraMax, you're making me smile. The firefighters in our town are the opposite, it seems. At least the ones I've seen who've shown up at daycare centers and at the town library are lanky. Maybe they have rippling muscles under their gear, I just don't see it. But they didn't strike me as athlete-type muscular. So if I want to see buff men, where does that leave a mom like me, huh?:) Having said that, I don't think that everyone who's rescued is overweight either.;-)

The firefighters here are not buff either!! LOL! I laughed when I read the post because DH and I took the kids to get ice cream before out vacation and I was at the outside window with a couple firefighters. I walked back to the van, looked at my DH and said "I thought firefighters were suppose to big and muscular and hunky?" He laughed and said "I guess not". These firefighter had definately had too much ice cream and they were also on the short side. LOL! :D

LOL! If you want to see buff men, check out your police department. But you can only look & not touch--those guys are notorious cheaters.

The firefighters here aren't that buff, though some are. I was once driving near the site of a fire, and a fire truck and assistance truck (regular truck with someone from the fire department in) were going the opposite direction and stopped just behind me. I got to the stop sign and looked in my rearview mirror to see what was happening: the guy who got out of the assistance truck was way out of shape and while standing had "plumber's crack." Definitely NOT calendar material (unless you're into that kind of thing...but I'm not!).

OK I just had to share this with you guys to prove my point:

If you click on "sneak peak" (which you know you want to anyway LOL), the guy on the top left is a captain for my town's PD. He's won several local competitions & has actually been in a few national magazines like Men's Fitness. Believe me when I tell you he is the most arrogant jacka$$ you'll ever meet--in fact, I find him incredibly unattractive b/c of his attitude. But his body on the other hand...........:p

Oh & here's some food for thought. This guy did a spread for a men's fitness mag shirtless, in front of a South Orange patrol car, with his uniform pants & gun on. So, here's my question: if it was me scantily clad in front of an official South Orange vehicle or building flexing all my muscles for the world to see, do you think I'd still have a job?

LOL- Max, the cops around here sure ain't buff! They sit in their patrol cars either napping, getting food from 7-11 or chatting up a storm with another cop in their cars. That are Suffolk/Nassau county police officers. I see more in shape cops from NYPD than the county cops. The county fire departments are mostly out of shape but NYFD sure isn't out of shape. My cousin is in NYFD and he sure is in a good shape. A lot of NYFDs and NYPDs I know are in AWESOME shape and some are in their 40's and 50's. It's the locals that are overweight, sloppy, doesn't workout, etc around here. Besides, why should they work hard?? They get paid over 75,000 a year to start. SHEESH! And NYPDs don't even make nearly as much and they deserve it more than these lousy porkers. Long Island really sucks financially.

You would think that they would be required to stay in shape given the nature of their jobs, which may include at times, hauling large people out of buildings.

In my area, in the last few years, cops and state patrolmen have been suspended for being way over the weight range. Is that not the case for firefighters?
Just Do It! :)

Yep. My last boyfriend was a cop. Too much time hanging out in his patrol car. I think that's what happens to suburban cops. Not much going on. And the longer we dated, the bigger he got. Of course, I didn't care because I loved him.

Now I just think he's a fat lump. :7

The town I grew up with had pot bellied type cops. However, things seem to have changed since then. A black bear wandered down from the mountains and the police were called in to trap him. The local cop who got out of the car could have rivalled Arnold himself. I caught myself gaping. Not due to lust or anything just shock. I'm glad they've toned up. You need them fit when a crisis hits.

Our fire department is volunteer only and they take what they can get. Some guys are deceptively strong despite there outward appearance. My son (18yo) is tall and lanky (pencil thin) but he's all muscle.

I don't think I've seen any Cops in Austin who look like that!

Last night on the news, however, they were showing a clip of firefighters trying out for a local calendar they are doing to raise money for some charity. I may check it out!}(

"From rescuing all the fat
people out of buildings, that's all". LOL!

I think that is a ugly comment and I don't find it funny.I must be missing something.

Agreed, there's nothing funny about his comment - it was rude and insensitive. What a jerk! I wouldn't let him rescue my ghetto booty from any burning building. I'm strong - I'll rescue myself, thank you very much! :p

Well sorry if "fat" offends anyone here, but the guy was probably being honest. Logically speaking, the more weight you lift (a fat person or just weights) you will get stronger in time. There is nothing wrong with someone making good use by lifting/rescuing fat people.

I doubt he even spends 10% of his time on the job actually rescuing anyone. Firefighters do a lot of sitting around and waiting. He's not being honest. He's being a jerk.
