Finding a home for a dog

Cathlete
My mom has a 5 year old Dolberman named Zeus. He is a really good dog, that needs ALOT of attention. My mom loves the dog, but she has been having alot of different medical issues, on top of working full time (my dad too). It has been a hard decision, but she really feels that he would be better off with another family who can give him the attention that he needs. My mom just wants what is best for him.
He is not neutered. He is good with other animals (if not sometimes timid of them). He is good with kids, doesn't mind them jumping on him or playing with him, etc.
He can go outside with no leash and be fine (huge yard and such).
Zues is a nice looking dog, but needs someone who can give him alot of attention.
If anyone has any advice, or possibly interested, that would be great. No matter what, where he goes, has to be a wonderful environment with loving people.
THanks guys!!

I wish I could help, Doodle. I'll be praying that you find a great home. I feel bad for your poor mom. I'm sure she wishes she could keep him but it's just not possible sometimes. I'll pray for her, too.

Hi Maeghan,

I'm mostly a luker here. Your parents might want to consider having him neutered. I believe that really calms down a male dog, especially if he has alpha tendancies. Then, they might be able to keep him.:)

To be quite honest, I don't know why he isn't neutered! LOL! I will have to ask mom tomorrow about that. THanks for posting Rhonda!

Check on the internet to see if there is a doberman rescue group in your area. Rescue groups are often able to help find homes for dogs that owners are having to give up (not just homes for ones that need rescuing). Rescue groups usually have criteria for the new home so there is less worries than just giving it away to someone you don't know. Good luck, I hope you find him a good home. Giving up a pet is hard to deal with. Hugs to you and your family.

Hi, Meg -
I don't have any advice here, but I just wanted to offer best wishes to you and your parents. I know this is a tough decision, because pets can be loved like a member of the family. I hope your mom is okay!

Oh my goodness, I wish I could take him. But there's that whole "other country" thing to consider. I wish you lots of luck in finding a happy home for him.

Definitely check for a rescue group--I have no doubt there are many for dobies. Also you might be able to find a local no-kill shelter. We have one in my town, it's funded by two municipalities, they take in animals & keep them or foster them out if they're not adopted.

Put up a notice in vets' offices, and have them keep an eye/ear open for a responsible new owner.

And I've just got to say it: why the heck is this dog not neutered? I would sugggest doing that before finding him a new home.

I agree with Katherine. I'd put up ads in your local Vet office. If your folks are anything like me they would feel a lot better having met the family, or person that is taking their family memeber. I would love to take him myself, and I'd even consider it if I didn't already have 2 dogs. I love Dobermans.
Good luck on finding the perfect home!

Kathy

You could post an ad for him at www.petfinder.com

I would also have him neutered before finding him a home. Some people will act all interested in the dog just to get it, but in reality they're only interested in useing the dog for stud service and get rid of it as soon as it's no longer needed.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I will check out all the links with my mom later today. You guys are all so sweet!:+
Shelly, I don't know how that other country thing would work LOL!! Sucks that it has to be such a pain huh?!

Did they get him from a breeder? If so, please contact the breeder. I'd also suggest contacting a local rescue Dobe rescue group to help you out. They can screen homes for you, etc.

If you need help finding a Dobe rescue near you, try www.dpca.org and go to the rescue section. If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll ask on my Dobe list.

I would also not let him go without being neutered. But it isn't going to change his personalty that much, especially at 5 years old. It will be better for him as far as health and to make sure nobody uses him for breeding.
