I have asics gels too. I picked them over several ryka styles. I love Zappos.
I used to use cross trainers for running. Well, I was getting terrible blood blisters. I went to a running store to get fitted for running shoes. Since then, I only use running shoes for running and cross trainers for other cardio.
Anyhow, the guy at the running store said running shoes are made for forward movements and cross trainers are better for lateral and other foot movements/placement. Of course, he used more technical terms to explain. No more blood blisters for me. Although he could have just been getting me to buy his sneaker!
