Figs?

As I was getting ready to leave this morning, the cooking/food lady came on the news to talk about healthy, seasonal snacks. She was getting ready to talk about figs, but I had to motor on out the door to work. I've seen figs at the store, both dried and fresh, but I've never eaten one outside of a Newton. I am intrigued by the fresh fig, but I don't know what to do with it. They are kinda small, do I eat the skin? peel it? pick out the seeds? eat them? I did see a quick picture of them stuffed w/ a white cheese of some sort, and they appeared to be raw w/ the skins on. Always interested in new food, what do I do with these?

Nan - I buy the dried version in the organic section of the food store. You just eat those whole seeds and all and I swear it just tastes like a Fig Newton. I'm not sure what you would do with a fresh one though.

mmmm...figs with gorgonzola and a drizzle of honey, baked just a bit!!! that combo is also good as a pizza (sans the honey!). If you eat meat, prosciutto is a good addition.

All of the above suggestions are really delicious. I like eating them just plain. I eat the whole fig minus the stem and could go thru the whole little basket. We had a fig tree in our backyard growing up and the figs were wonderful.

They're only available a few times per year here, but when they are, this is exactly how DH and I eat them. :)

GOOD question NAN! I am completely ignorant when it comes to figs! My only experience is the very yummy fig newton. I will have to look for them! Now if I could just find some fig leaves for DH....

Thanks ladies. I think I will swing thru Whole Foods on the way home and see if they have some. I think I will try them fresh and raw first, and then perhaps the honey/cheese baked thing. Mmmmm.....that combo sounds good to be curled up w/ DH with ;);):p

They are also really tasty raw with chevre...pop in the mouth delicious. The combo of chevre and fig is also good in a baby greens salad with walnuts and balsamic vinegar...adding bartlett pear to the greens and fig/chevre/walnut trio is fantastic too.

We have a fig tree and I always have to beat the quail to them, they cluster under the fig tree and gorge themselves!

:D

I just had some raw figs the other day (if I'd ever had them before, it was back in the 70's!). I wasn't quite sure what to do with them, but I just ate them the way Phyllis and Gayle do, and they were very tasty!

You can also cut off the stem, then slice them in 1/2 or 1/4 and add them to the top of a salad.

I eat a lot of dried figs. I like both black mission and calmyrna. (though I got some other kind that starts with a "c" a couple of weeks ago, and they tasted like mold, though I didn't see any on them.:( )

Picked some up at WF on the way home. $3 for the basket, and there are quite a few in there. Ate 5 on the way home. YUM!!! Will have to try them on a salad, sounds yum, and baked - I see how that would carmelize the sugar in them. And maybe toss a few in my oatmeal w/ some honey in the morning, see what happens. I love it when a new food works out, esp when its good for me!

As mentioned the fresh figs are highly seasonal. You've already had some great suggestions.

I would just add that different varieties have slightly different tastes. My current favorite is the green Kadota. (they look similar to the 'white' Italian figs but taste different) It's been described as having strawberry jam as the inside. yummmmm. I eat them fresh with just the stem cut off. Because they can spoil quickly I dehydrated some slices. Candy

Oh...my...GOODNESS!!! These are SOOOO delicious....I eat them RAW! Just as they are with skin on and seeds and all! Try to get them a little soft...softer the sweeter! They are so goooood! GO OUT AND BUY SOME! hehe
