Favorite Wines?

Beavs

As a fairly indiscriminate uneducated wine drinker I'd love to know what others out there enjoy. I like to try different wines and usually rely on word of mouth, sampling, and snazzy bottle labels to find new things. I rarely venture beyond the $25.00 range but I dare not stoop to MD 20/20. Some of my favorites right now are....

Anything Greg Norman (I had no idea he was a golf dude)
Whoop Whoop (shiraz, Australia)
Pine & Post (Chardonnay, WA state)
Bitch (Grenache, So. Australia)
Coho Red (NY state)

I noticed you're particular to reds; Coppola makes a fantastic, mid-priced red wine. Not sure if you like whites but Santa Margarita's Pinot Grigio is very good. I know they have a line of reds too!

I like:
Cavit Pinot Noir
Feudo Arancio Nero d'Avola
Pasqua Pinot Grigio and Montepulciano d Abruzzo
Barefoot makes pretty good Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blancs too and it's a huge bargain.
Le Drunk Rooster Pinot Noir isn't too shabby

Hmmmm..... cheaper, good wine

I'm fond of most Reislings and Gerwurzmeiners (can't spell it though)
I don't do chardonnay - haven't found one yet that I like.

Polka Dot reisling in the bottle w/ the pink dot is very good, haven't tried the bottle w/ the green dot yet.
The Reisling that comes in the blue bottle w/ the yellow/orange starburst on it is good as well, can't recall the name

I also like blends of different varities, the red and white Menage a Trios are both good.

The red and white Prom-is-Q-ous blends are both good, as well

Everything I've had by Origins has been good, as well

I am more partial to whites than reds, but its all good:p

Check out some lesser known grapes, like Malbec, from some of the South American wineries. I also love me a good Sangiovese.

I tend to buy based on region rather than brand...lately it's South America, Italy, and Vermont. ;)

I'm a big Malbec fan too - and it can be great mixed with Merlot. I tend to prefer Canadian wines (not exclusively, though) and like Jackson Triggs and Peele Island the best at the moment. I tend toward the big reds and cleaner whites, like Sauvignon Blanc.

Some current favourites:

  • Jackson Triggs White Merlot
  • JT Malbec-Merlot
  • JT Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Peele Island Baco Noir
  • Two Oceans Sauvignon Blanc

I'm still working my way through some Chilean Malbecs and haven't narrowed down a favourite yet.

I lean toward dry, and I love a good chardonney. Among my favs are: Columbia Crest Grand Estates
La Crema
Edna Valley
Rooster Hill
Dr. Franks.

Hmmmm, almost quittin' time....off to find a glass.

Thanks for this thread Beavs! I like a good, sweet wine. Are they normally going to be whites? I have tried several reds (what DH prefers) and they all make my lips pucker!

Sweet Bitch (can I post that??)-very nice pinot grigio...Bought it because it looked good in the wine rack...nice for a $10 bottle of wine!

Rieslings are usually sweet. Sometimes you can come by a sweet Shiraz but they're a little more difficult to find. Both are red.

There is also something called Lambrusco which is a sparkling red wine. It sounds gross but it is definitely worth a try! It's perfect for the holidays!

okay I'll play.
I do not know the origins and am unsure of spelling. These are reds that I like:

Red Rock
cab-u-los
Ravens Wood

These are just a few that I can remember off the top of my head. But for the last last year I have been trying to not spend so much on wine so I have gone to box wine. I really like Black Box and yes it comes in a black box. I like their cab and chard. If I want something sweeter I enjoy Fish Eye Pinot Grigio.

For bottled wines I found those at Vino 100 and have never bought a bad wine from the one close to me. The owner has always been helpful and kept me in my price range.

Beavs, I'm certain to be less educated than you regarding wine but I do love a glass now and then.

I think I confessed previously that I buy wine based on the amusement factor of the label, therefore I have previously purchased, and enjoyed...

Running With Scissors - a chardonnay I believe
Goats Do Roam - a red of funky origin
Bees Knees - another chardonnay
Clean Slate - a riesling (rieslings are white to the best of my knowledge, not red, but I could be mistaken).

For nicer occasions we like...

Landmark Overlook Chardonnay
Cline Ancient Vines Zinfandel (Mmmmmmm, lovely)
Jack London Kenwood Zinfandel

And my new FIL gave us a bottle of Clos Du Bois pinot which was also lovely.

We've also had Old Fart Red and Big House Pink.

It's fun to try different wines and I think we're at an advantage actually NOT being terribly sophisticated because of the lack of preconceived notions.

I'm not a fan of sweet wines. I like dry wines, but you should try white shiraz. Banrock Station makes a good one. I like it from time to time.

I love reds:

My favorite right now is Cline zinfandel.

I've also been buying Malbecs and Petite Syrahs lately. YUM!

Another red lover here. I enjoy reading about everyone's recommendations. Here are a few of my favorites:

Raymond (Napa) - all of their reds are delicious, especially the Cabs
Seghesio Zinfandel (Napa)
Provenance Cab (Napa)

Some of those listed above are on the higher end of my price range (though the Zin is around $18). For an inexpensive everyday wine, my favorite is a Sicilian wine carried at Trader Joe's. It is Archeo Ruggero di Tasso / Nero d'Avola (winemaker/grape), and costs around $5.

Beavs, a friend gave me a bottle of the wine you mentioned: Bitch (Grenache, So. Australia). I think it's about time to try it.

Maui Blanc and Maui Splash...........the most delicious PINEAPPLE wine, imported from Hawaii!! I am ADDICTED to these babies!!!:D

Maui Blanc
A soft, semi-dry wine made from the juice of Maui grown pineapples. Its pineapple flavor is subtle with a lingering finish. This wine can be served for all occasions and is a great compliment to Pacific Rim cuisine.

Maui Splash!
Light and fruity, this pineapple and passion fruit wine is our biggest seller. Sweet like a dessert wine, but with good acidity and a clean finish.

Mark West Pinot Noir
North by Northwest Cabernet
Woodbridge Pinot Noir
Alice White Shiraz
Yellow Tail Shiraz

Some one give me a drink!!!!!

I like the Traverse City red wines (pinot noir is a new favorite). (Aren't you from Michigan, Beavs?) You should go on a wine tour. That is a cheap way to try lots of different wines. I only sample the reds, since I know that I don't like the whites at all. If they know that you intend to buy, they will let you sample more than the usual. Sometimes the sample is barely a swallowful of the wine. More sophisticated wine tours are more expensive (Traverse City ones are free), and will give you more for a sample.

I like the wines from Australia. Yellow Tail (shiraz or merlot are my favorites). I used to like Maggie's Perch (another Australia). I found it at WalMart for $5!! But they stopped making it :(

Great thread!!

Some of my favorite wines are from a local winery - Newport Vineyards!

My favorite chardonnay is a Chateau Montelena Chardonnay
A great bordeaux blend is Chateau St. Jean

I don't like sweet Reisling and surprisingly, Chateau Montelena's Reisling is amazing!

Another really good bold Cab Sauv is by Louis M. Martini - that one I believe is relatively inexpensive, but full of flavor!

Most of these are over $25 except for the Newport Vineyards.

You should look for a local winery and go to a tasting! You'd be surprised what you can find!

Excuse my spelling tonight - had my eyes dilated!

See, now y'all made me stop at the store to buy a bottle on the way home. I'll report back later, or not, depending how it goes ;)
