Oh my gosh,... my DS and I watched Despicable Me (again!) this eve before bed. The bed-time story scene really hit me hard so we went upstairs and I read him my ALL time fav bed-time story. "I love you so" my Miranda Richardson. Still love Good Night Moon!! We can recite it verbatum!

Of course, I bawled my eyes out and he got all teary as well. What bed time stories get to you and you and your children love?

When my kids were younger (lol, they're 13 and 10 now) I read them Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. If THAT doesn't make you cry, nothing will! LOL I got a copy for each of my boys and wrote a note on the inside cover so they'd each have one for when they grow up.

Now, my younger son still loves his books, and his favorites are a set of 3 by Amy Hest....."You Can Do It, Sam", "Kiss Good Night" and "Don't You Feel Well, Sam". I had never heard of them before, and many of my friends hadn't either. But SOMETHING just seemed to click for DS with these books and he LOVES them.

I don't have kids but I got one of my nephews The Hockey Sweater by Roch Carrier. This is a classic story for kids here in Canada.

My nephew passed it down to his two younger brothers now that he has outgrown it and their parents tell me it's still one of their most requested bedtime stories.

I don't have children, but I use many picture books in my teaching, and I'm always adding to my niece's collection. Here are some of my favorites:

Time for Bed - Mem Fox
A Child’s Good Night Book - Margaret Wise Brown
The House in the Night - Susan Marie Swanson
Long Night Moon - Cynthia Rylant (love her books!)
The Paper Bag Princess - Robert Munsch
The Man Who Walked Between the Towers - Mordicai Gerstein
Kitten’s First Full Moon - Kevin Henkes
The Giving Tree - Shel Silverstein
Dear Zoo - Rod Campbell (lift the flap)
The True Story of the Three Little Pigs - Jon Scieszka
Make Way for Ducklings - Robert McCloskey
Whoever You Are - Mem Fox
The Table Where Rich People Sit - Byrd Baylor
The Cello of Mr. O - Jane Cutler
Thank You, Mr. Falker - Patricia Polacco
The Mysteries of Harris Burdick - Chris Van Allsburg
Black and White - David Macaulay (this one’s very out there—will make you think)
Chrysanthemum - Kevin Henkes
The Red Book - Barbara Lehman (wordless)
Zoom - Istvan Banyai (wordless)

Some with heavier, historical subject matter:
Faithful Elephants: A True Story of Animals - Yukio Tsuchiya
Sadako - Eleanor Coerr and Ed Young
The Butterfly - Patricia Polacco
Rose Blanche - Roberto Innocenti
The Wall - Eve Bunting

Those are two of my favorites also! And to this day I cannot get through Love You Forever without tears!

One of our kids' favorites (and mine;)) has always been My Lucky Day by Keiko Kasza. Very cute story!

My daughter has always liked Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett, I think because it's so lengthy, ya know?

My 5-year-old loves any story with puppies. His current favorite is A Very Special Snowflake by Don Hoffman.

There is nothing I enjoy more with my kids than than snuggling up and reading to them!

We have yet to see Despicable Me. Thanks for the reminder.:)

I was big on Where The Wild Things Are and The Giving Tree. I always got so pissed at that kid who grew into such a greedy man. Then of course, all the Winnie the Pooh stories. My favorite was Eeyore's birthday.

My 3 kids have managed to collect way too many books over the years so we alternate a lot. My 11 & 8 yr olds read books themselves before bed but I still read a bedtime story to my 4 year old and the 8 yr old still enjoys them from time to time. Goodnight Moon, I'll Always Love You, On The Day You Were Born. Cowlick is a new favorite we've discovered. My little one is waaay into Cars right now so it seems like all of his choices lately have to include Lightning McQueen and Mater.

My kids like laughing or slightly scary. I just love childrens books and have gotten a little out of the habit of reading every night for fun also. My kids are 2- 9 year old girls and 1- 7yr old boy. Some of our classics that we have been enjoying for years and still enjoy are: The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs, The Stinky Cheese Man, Walter the Farting Dog, The Spider and the Fly, Diary of a Worm, Edward the Emu, and Mice Twice. I could go on forever though. I too cry when I read Love You Forever thats why my kids dont like it anymore.

I LOVE IT!! What a bunch of great books! I have to say that the Kindle & other electroic books are convenient but NOTHING can compare to the touch, feel and smell of REAL books. I can't even imagine "reading" our favorite bed-time stories from an electronic device. Just doesn't hold the same specialness and warm-fuzzies!

Oh, now I feel all snuggly and gushy inside!

My boys are older (11 and 15) but we still try to read aloud as a family(before bedtime) as often as possible. We progressed from bedtime stories to Harry Potter many years ago. After reading that series multiple times, they finally let me progress to more books. (Sometimes I pass the book and let them read, as well.)

If you like tear-jerkers-here is the #1 tear-jerker of ALL TIME: Where The Red Fern Grows. Absolutely cannot be read aloud without passing the book! My father, brothers and I read it aloud on a camping trip when I was a teenager and by the end, none of us could get through more than a sentence or two! My kids have heard this story for years and are about to experience it for themselves as it is next on my list. Pass the tissue.
