Fat City: Obesity in Houston Texas

Did anybody see this show on TRIO? I am still in shock ater watching 'Bud' eat a 32 oz battered fried steak with a huge serving of french fries and salad! I got full just watching him.

I felt really odd watching the large woman (I can't remember her name) who had to use a motor chair, and had a nurse to help her take care of herself because she was so large. Her BMI was over 100! I liked the fact that she was so self accepting...to a degree. I kept asking myself, '...but wouldn't you like to be able to walk?'. She said that she was happy the way she was and she didn't plan to change anything...not even for health reason.:-(

It looks like even with the high protein craze going, America is still growing.

They sent 5 of us for a seminar in Philadelphia in September of last year. Maybe it was just a part of the city we were at but it was quite the culture shock for us Toronto girls. It's funny though that only two of us reacted the way we did. We could hardly eat the whole 4 days and months afterwards, were really fat phobic. We worked out like crazy during our free time at the hotel gym and even now, see weight gain as terrifying. I agree with the question...Don't you want to be able to walk? I've read that obesity is genetrically pre-determined like the size of my hips or my eyecolor...but that doesn't apply to everyone. Sometimes when an overweight person can't move...you have to wonder.

I HAVE BEEN OVERWEIGHT TWO YEARS AGO. I KNOW SOMETHING: YOU CREATE YOUR OVERWEIGHT.THE OBESITY IS NOT DETERMINATED LIKE YOUR HEIGHT OR COLOUR OF EYES. tHAT IS THE EXCUSE THAT THE FAT PERSON, AS i WAS , USED TO JUSTIFY AND NOT RECOGNIZE THAT THEY EAT TO MUCH. I ATE FOR BOREDOM,SADNESS. THERE ARE LOT OF REASON BUT THE ONLY TRUE THING IS THAT I WAS NOT HAPPY. MY KNESS STARTED TO HURT ME, MY BACK FELL PAIN.NOW AFTER LOSSING 25 KILOS (I THINK THAT IS 50 POUNDS)I AM ALWAYS FRIGHTENED THINKING I CAN COME BACK TO THIS OVERWEIGHT.NOW I CAN WALK,I CAN DO CATHE DVD. THE PERSON YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT IS AUTODECEIVE HER. SHE CAN NOT ADMIT SHE CAN NOT WALK.

It is amazing how denial can really make people just not see the truth. I'm in MI and there was a woman on a radio show the other day that has conventions for an organization of people who celebrate that they are overweight. She said she is 275 lbs and in perfect health. She said that it is all a big lie that being overweight is bad for anyone and Doctors just fabricate that because they don't like fat people. All of the people in her organization really believe that. It's crazy.

She said she's in perfect health? Do you think it's possible to be really overweight and all of your cholestorol levels, triglyceride levels etc. be within the normal range? I'm just curious, because I've heard people who are normal weight can even have borderline high cholestorol.

No, I absolutely don't believe she is in perfect health at that weight. I think it's sad that she thinks she is. When she starts to have serious problems, she will realize the doctors aren't making it up.

I am of normal weight and have high cholesterol. It runs in my family:-( . My grandma who was an extremely tiny woman had very, very high cholesterol. I have several overweight family members who have better cholesterol levels than I do. I don't think that it is always related to weight. However, I have no idea if your cholesterol can be normal if you are morbidly obese.

There is an organization called the National Association for the Advancement of Fat Acceptance (NAAFA). THere was a man at my job that they wanted to fire because he was overweight and could not perform the tasks of the job. He cried discrimination and contacted this organization. The man could barely walk and always had something hurting him.

I have been going to physical therapy, on and off, over the past 9 months because of an accident at work. The physical therapy place is full of obese people whose doctors have "prescribed" physical activity and the medical insurance pays!! All they talk about in the sessions is FOOD! I have a hard time listening to talk about steaks and other fattening foods. Gluttony is a sad problem. I have not been able to exercise like I want since my accident at work, and have gained some weight. I'm really looking forward to being released by the doctors so that I can lose this weight. Being overweight really has a negative effect on your quality of life. I guess that if you have been obese all your life, you don't know that there are other options.
