Exercise Rooms

When did you decide, realize you needed your own personal exercise room?

when you decided, did you plan colors, equipment or let it happen as you grew?

Do you find a large mirror a help or hinderance?

Do you even have a mirror in there?

I don't have a space dedicated soley to my exercise as I just don't have the room for it right now...It is my "dream" though.

Right now I exercise in a small bedroom in my home that we have turned into a computer room/laundry room/storage area/exercise area...lol. My space is tight but I make the best of it. No mirror in there as I have no proper blank wall space for it. When looking for our next house down the line I would like to find something that has an adequate sized room or space that I can DEDICATE to exercise...a finished basement would be the ultimate!

Have a great work out!

I realized it when my living room turned into a gym. There is absolutely no furniture except 2 rocking chairs anymore. So I am working on converting my back bedroom, which involves packing up & finding storage for hundreds of books. I'm about half done! I told DH if I could use the back room he could have his living room back, so he went out & bought me a new TV, DVD Player, and VCR for my soon to be new gym! I was floored, to say the least.

I have tons of stuff to put in there, but no mirror. I want a mirror though, & will get one as soon as I can.

Love that suport system. I have a room but I still am doing it in my kitchen. Probably the worse place but I feel great energy in here, as you can see, I said in here so you know where the computer is. I don't know how to get myself set up in *a* room.

If you hubby bought all those goods, you gotta get them books moving and soon.

Put them out there to that Avid Readers thread. They will take them off your hands.

Hi tytbody,

You're right, I need to get those books out of there asap. There are many I wouldn't even consider parting with, but there are also many I could let go. What is Avid Readers? If I go there, am I in danger of owning more books instead of less? LOL

Hi Tytbody...

I don't have a special exercise room, but I exercise in my spare bedroom. It functions as a guest bedroom, office, and exercise haven. I don't have mirrors in there (because I work out first thing in the morning with uncombed hair and no makeup - don't want to scare myself :)). Everything in it is decorated as though it is a bedroom, so I'm careful to have a "hiding" place for everything. For example, my step and risers all fit neatly in the closet. I use my step as a weight bench so I don't have a bulky bench in there. My dumbbells fit in under the bed storage bins that I can easily slide under the bed to hide them. My DVDs are stacked on a bookshelf. My barbell and weights also hide in the closet. So when guests come, they don't even know its my exercise room! But during the week, I usually leave my weights out and my mats/step/risers ready to go!
The only thing I did "special" was add a ceiling fan for my Cathe workouts (alleluia!!) and a dimmer light switch for when I do yoga.

oohhh that sounds nice, the dimmer light switch. hum. gave me something to think about... thank you

On the avid readers, it's on this open discussion forum. I think someone wants to talk about reading so I thougth maybe you could lend a hand in there and lend out some books.

I am finding my stuff all over the floor. I have to remember if I were at the gym, I'd have to get out the equipment also. I just want to turn around and leave it there.

I looked at one lady's picture trail and she inspired me to ask. She has all her tapes, in a rack dumbell rack and you can see the TV. I said hum.. that looks like a place I can work out in.

you see, I'm looking for something, some thing to get me in a room and do it. If it's not the room there has to be more motivation in doing exercise and since I've not gotten it yet, I thought maybe a cool room would help.

I don't want to spend all this money on dvd's and have them start to collect dust. !!!!! I've tried the home thing before an it didn't work. Now at the rate of these ...and I just canceled my gym membership, I have to make this work. Any other suggestions. I'm still on the motivation is what gets you started part ....

i am VERY lucky......my space is 1/2 of a finished basement. i have my ellpitcal, step, high step, FIRM steps, bands, weights, ball etc...and my beloved rebounder!!!!!!!!!!!! plus built in shelves for all my workouts......with all the stuff i have..the entire neighborhood should be in tip top shape!!!

i dont have any special decor...although i may consider getting some
fitness related posters

no planning involved......just built up with time and money and motivation!

tytbody,

You said something that really *struck* me:

"you see, I'm looking for something, some thing to get me in a room and do it. If it's not the room there has to be more motivation in doing exercise and since I've not gotten it yet, I thought maybe a cool room would help. "

Having, creating, or building a special room is not going to be enough motivation to get to to stick to a workout plan. You don't need to look at "objects" (rooms, equipment, dvds) for your motivation, you need to be looking within yourself, the motivation HAS to come from inside otherwise your efforts won't stick. You cannot leave it up to unanimate objects. You need to be driven to do it in the rawest of conditions.

I say, don't spend another dime on workout stuff until you make a 3 month workout plan (or whatever time span you need) and stick to it perfectly. Prove to yourself that you are willing to do the work in the rawest of conditions, THEN beef up your space.

Not trying to piss you off, just trying to give you something to think about before you spend more $$$.

Oh, and to answer the question, I workout in my bedroom which has mirrors on the closet doors. I slide my dumbells, weight bar, plates, and club step under my bed and other stuff in closets. Treadmill is smack in the middle of the family room.

My dream, too, is to move into a house will a finished basement that can be split between a kids play area and my workout room. One day...one day!

Ya know, you didn't piss me off. You might have/be the only thing words I've gotten today that are on point.

I have never made a 3 month commitment. You said good stuff sista. I'm willing to do that and I need to do that. 3 months is just 12 weeks.

But, can I buy my barbell set and 12 lb weights? Really?
and one more question, that means I need a three month rotation.

I am doing the beginner one now for March.

Should I pick up another DVD for the other months so I can follow through on that plan?

Sounds like solid advice to me of which I'm taking you up on.
you go in my journal for today. Thank you.

so I see you all are plowing through a lot of challenges at home and still have the commitment.

Awesome. This is also good to see for me. I always think there is something else I should be doing or be in a cool room. But, no. it does not have to be all diamond perfect.

I just have to do it through it all. Get my attitude into and belive, it will happen, in the kitchen or not.

Hmm...I'll let you buy the 12 pounders but I need to know what moves you want the barbell for before I can allow it....as for purchasing more workouts, absolutely not!!! Just repeat the first 4 weeks. You have already spent a lot of money, it's time to show us what you've got!

It doesn't matter how long...3 months, 10 weeks, 8 weeks. You just have to say, "I am going to do this for "x" amount of time and reward myself with "X"". Now, this is where the equipment comes in...reward yourself for sticking to the program with more dumbells, a barbell, a new dvd, a new workout outfit. That is a big way a lot of us have beefed up our gear. Not too many of us started our programs with all the crap we have now, I think it's safe to say non of us have. It's a process of proving ourselves and rewarding ourselves. It also helps us know what we actually need and what is gimmick.

I consider myself very fortunate too! I have a spare room that is used almost exclusively as my workout room. It doubles as a guest room, but we have overnight guests so infrequently that it's not an issue. I have to agree with the above post...a room is not enough to provide the motivation to stick with an exercise program. When I first started working out at home years ago I had no extra space whatsoever and was doing grapevines around the sides of my bed! Talk about modification! But you do what you have to to make it work. It is so worth it!

Now I'm lucky enough to have a dedicated room and I just finished fixing it up a bit. I repainted and did a faux finish on the walls, put up a new curtain rod and curtains, and a ceiling fan (such a necessity with Cathe workouts!). I have all my equipment neatly arranged along one wall and a small shelf that holds all my DVD's. Otherwise the floor is wide open! Oh! Yes, there are mirrors...the sliding closet doors are mirrored and they are about the size of a whole wall. The room itself is not that big, but now that I've cleaned all the stuff out of it, it is just the perfect size to workout in!

That room has become my favorite room now. It is my sanctuary ;) .

Now, if I only had room for a treadmill! Hmmmm, that would definitely have to go in the garage....:)

I hope its okay to have this conversation here.

I was thinking I loved the gym when I went. I loved doing upper body work. My part time job is a massage therapist. I need to keep my upper body tight and working efficiently.

I therefore wanted some upper body work to keep it tight and also to keep my happy. I love working Chest, back, biceps.

Can I get one more DVD with those in it?
I thought getting the barbell set for $44 was a great buy, it's 110 set. Now that is good isn't it?

I realy do need the 12's, I can handle it. I have 5 + 10's and the Corey everson Sport blocks but they are not as fast when you need to change weights. That was gimmic I should not have fallen for. Nothing like solid hex dumbells I tell and a bar and you can do anything.

My man just told me I was tight. I just told him I cancelled my gym mmebership and he said he was surprised to hear that with exclamation point on the end. he never told me I was tight. h--ll I been thinking and feel still so over the mark with myself.

So, I have to keep what I got and improve on it.

Please continue with the suggestions. I just wrote you in my journal entry for today. This will all come out when someone asks me how I made the change, I will have the wisdom to show them cause my brain sure might not be remembering all that I do/did.

OK, I have to say I'm really jealous of anyone who has a room or a space dedicated to working out. I'm in a small apt....1/4 of the living room is taken up with my weight bench, step and weights; 1/4 of the bedroom has my treadmill. When I do a step workout and have to move around the step in any way, I have to be careful that I don't run into or kick the computer on one side, the kitchen table on the other, and the refrigerator and stove behind me. On the positive side, I find that having all my exercise stuff right out in the room all the time makes it easier to get started working out. :)

>OK, I have to say I'm really jealous of anyone who has a room

Me, too. My workout space is approximately 5x8, and when I do a workout like L&G or HSC that needs a lot of equipment resetting, I have to keep pausing the DVD so I can push things aside and make more room. I'd love to have a room in the house specifically for working out, but that's just a dream right now.

Ok...I have a motto for this thread..."Whatever It Takes!"

You gotta do what you gotta do to get that workout in, no matter where you are or what you have to work with. Do the best you can! For years I worked out in my living room of my small apartment too. Every night I would actually pick up the coffee table and carry it into my bedroom. Then I moved the couch as far away as I could so my step would fit in front of the TV and I had a little room to move. I put my dumbbells on the couch so I wouldn't trip over them. It was an adventure but it was worth it!

Thank you all so much. I was not able to lift my legs for the one where you lift it out to the side for hitting the kitchen cabinets or the computer. Then when it was time to stretch, I had to pause the player and get the step, spread the mat and thought, boy, this is annoying.

I will make a sign tonight called, *DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES*
Great support.

i need a sign like that too! i share my workout room with my dogs. it's the size of a bedroom and used to be a porch, but got walled in. i have all my machines and stuff in there. we put in a window ac unit. i have posters on the walls of inspiring women. i can't leave my puzzle mats down though b/c my youngest puppy will demolish them. it happened once before. so i have to get them out and set them up every day. i tell myself when i get aggravated, that i am luck to have the space for all of them, and it doesn't take that long!

Ruth: good to see you!:)
